In defense of the forum, the "status quo" you're citing is a result of the users, not us. If you want us (and by 'us,' I mean just me) to turn into [a bunch of] SFK[s] and be rigid, stringent, and pretty much assholes about every little thing in order to change the "status quo" as you deem apropos, that's perfectly fine with me because it takes all of two seconds to ban people and I don't mind banning alternate accounts.
However, in the interest of this particular forum, I've discovered that it's better to be a preventative moderator than one who drops a hammer at every instance seeing as how all of the troublemaking users have at least one back-up account at their disposals. That's all from me.
Your argument is contradictory. The stuff we got banned for (ie, discussing nominations in a nominations thread) is rigid sort of SFK bullshit that isn't hurting anybody. Vince just decides to waltz in whenever he pleases when there is spam all over the forum that is completely ignored. I don't have a problem with that, but these mass-bannings for stupid bullshit accomplish nothing. |
Perhaps that might be slightly more consistent, in my opinion. Granted, people would bitch, but they would know exactly where the line is. However, the point remains that discussing problems/suggestions in a thread such as this or discussing nomination-related things in a nomination thread is not spam. I think it would be a waste of time and forum space, for example, to create a thread for nomination lists only, and then have to create another thread to allow discussion of it. And Vince, I have run threads before with massive amounts of information I had to find and add to a list (bands/myspace/facebook threads), and it's not that difficult to pick through a few posts that are in discussion of the topic itself. It's not that much of a pain, it's not spam, and it certainly takes just as much, if not less time than banning 8 different users for relatively harmless postage. |
Why can't I give out rep on this account?
|
You may need to be registered for longer than you have been.
Vince has a little bit of trouble distinguishing between posts that aren't nominations and actual spam.
Read the rules of that thread and then no. :)
Your argument is contradictory. "That's what ya get for leaving us." Now shush. I didn't say it was difficult, I said it was inconvenient. And it is. =) Banning takes like 2 seconds I spent more time deleting posts than I did banning tbh.
ya it must be really hard to read through a page of twenty posts
You comprehend English as well as BRA, bravo. |
tbh this is a pretty loosely run forum. just mentioning sfk brings me back to unhappier days that people may or may not remember :(
edit: so stop your bitching about the bans. there were rules, you broke then, you suffered the consequences. i almost broke it but i deleted the post because vince did kinda sorta warn us. |
I know it's a loosely run forum, that's my whole point. Banning for useless shit that did not negatively affect anyone while letting other, much more detrimental spam go untouched, is just dumb when the forum is so lax.
5. This thread is for nominations or questions only please. Spam=ban...there's a community thread.

I always enforce the spam rule in my rmotm/rmoty threads. I'm very lenient elsewhere but I've always held that one to higher standards because, and this thread was a perfect example, I shouldn't have to read 3 pages of conversations just to find 2 nominations or votes.
Christ, do any of you motherfuckers read? |
Can someone clean up the last few pages of the black metal thread? It's a total shithole.
|
It's better than usual... at least they're having an intelligent discussion about something, black metal or not.
|
Jom, I took heed and deleted the post I made in here right before you banned my account. Why am I banned?
|
Because you didn't delete it, I did. There's no excuse for what you posted in the first place -- it's been clear by now that anything that isn't reporting a problem, asking a question, or making a suggestion related to R&M doesn't belong here, period.
|
I was in the process of editing/deleting it, christ. Just because you accomplished the task before I did doesn't warrant a ban.
EDIT: No, I deleted it. Then I went to post in the bm thread and when i pushed submit, it told me I was banned. |
... but you shouldn't have posted it in the first place. This is not the black metal thread, or the community thread, or any other thread where you can somewhat get away with statements like that. You chose unwisely.
|
..as do plenty of other people who don't get banned. There's the inconsistency we're talking about.
No constant posts or threads promoting racism, sexism, etc. These will not be tolerated.

Don’t continue personal arguments across the forum. This is not needed and will be dealt with harshly. Take it to AIM/MSN/YIM, etc. if you feel the need.
Everyone's guilty. Ban everybody. Technically, half the users in every thread should be banned if you want to play that game, including myself. So don't get all righteous with me. At least I made amends here. Others don't. |
What inconsistency? This thread is not on the same level as other threads. That's not what we have in mind and that's not how we enforce it. If we adopted a zero-tolerance policy in every thread, I would be getting rid of a slew of threads here and banning a whole lot of users... but that stuff stays out of this thread. Anybody who can view the number of deleted posts can tell you that this thread has been significantly more clean and free of user BS. Don't babble pointlessly about what other users in other threads should be doing, because those threads are exactly that: other threads... not this one.
It's a one-day ban for a dumbfuck post. Don't do it again, simple as. |
I'm just wondering...
answering questions from other posters is acceptable, right? I'm not sure if I should leave it to the mods. |
Of course it is, dude. It helps us out for the most part (unless your answers are wrong or you get people sidetracked for whatever reason) but if people want an answer from a mod they can wait for one, provided they specify that they want one from a mod.
|
Thanks Jom.
Also, I just wanna say how great of a mod you are. You're always helpful without being condescending and you can easily relate to how the normal posters are feeling and you seem more like part of the community than some sort of power hungry dictating mod. Thank You! |
So how do I get a bigger avatar again?
I looked through the thread but I couldn't find anything regarding the requirements. I fail, I know. |
Write an essay with an abstract... there are various samples throughout the thread. I think BRA wrote one just last page.
|
You have to write an essay explaining why you feel you deserve one. Preface it with an abstract (a summary paragraph that talks about what you're going to talk about), and cite your sources (e.g. links to threads, posts, etc., that will help bolster your argument). There really is no length, but being concise is good - keep in mind that you have to persuade your audience. As long as you have an abstract, relatively convincing essay, sources, and so on, you should be pretty crystal.
Also, BRA, I still don't understand why you're being a bitch still with your snarky rep message. Why don't you get a new piercing, call it Jom, stick it sideways through your urethra, and man up about being a jabroni? |
So the essay has to be about why I deserve a bigger avatar?
edit: okay  @ bra comment. |
Jom, I rep'd you at around the same time I posted my final response. I've dropped the issue, you can do the same. If you want to continue it and lower yourself to insulting me, I'll be more than happy to oblige...I don't give a fuck if you're a mod or not. Choose.
You should, not me. I know you've got the whole necromancer thing going on and everything but you lose every argument to the point that there are announcements made about you to stop being a tool. Seeing as how you don't acknowledge them, there isn't anything I can do to make the Internet world a darker, more cold place for you. You chose unwisely in posting here - that's it, that's all. |
C.O.A. (Joey) has been a member of the sputnikmusic.com community since December 2004. He was exposed to the forums through mxtabs.net (RIP) and decided to register. Though he registered in 2004, he did not really start posting as an active member until roughly mid 2005. He started out in the Guitar Forum and eventually checked out Rock and Metal. Wow. Joey was very surprised to see how many threads of interest were in this section of the forum. From this day on, Joey would come to call R&M his home on the forums.
Joey was registered to the forums for quite some time before becoming even remotely active. As a lurker, Joey attempted to understand the ways of the Guitar Forum before creating any topics or replying with serious purpose. Eventually, he grew some balls and decided to post a topic regarding his musical creations to get some opinions/ feedback from his highly respected guitar forum brothers(http://www.musicianforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=405366). After much praise and feedback, Joey's posting became a bit more consistent in the guitar forum and he became a regular member. After a brief hiatus, Joey decided to check out the rest of the forum. That's when he found Rock and Metal. As he browsed around the R&M forum, Joey noticed a thread entitled "any other death heads?". Curiously, he entered and read from the first page up until the latest. Eager to discuss his favorite bands, Joey replied to posts from many members he had never heard of. He was caught off guard by some of the member's replies as they were sometimes very mean and condescending in nature. After a while Joey ran into a very "interesting" poster who went by "Dargon". Needless to say, Joey realized that he needed to learn how to ignore certain users as they can be very offensive and hurtful if taken seriously. It took Joey a while to grasp that concept and he had some bad encounters with certain users. Once Joey got banned (Riva), he had an epiphany, if you will. He realized that he had been posting rather immaturely in the R&M threads and that it needed to stop. So after slowly "growing up" on the boards, Joey has come to respect his fellow R&Mers and tries his hardest to be a nice and helpful guy. Since his"epiphany" Joey has been exposed to many new bands. Some bands include Evil Incarnate, Dismember, Entombed, and Nihilist. Joey has been rather active in the Sludge/ Post-Metal thread as well. Since his participation in this thread, he has been obsessed with Isis, Pelican, Jesu, Empires, and loads of other artists. He has also tried to expose other users to new music as well. Some bands that he has brought up include Empires, Russian Circles, and Deceased. Overall, Joey has come to love the R&M community with all of his heart. He hopes to discover and share new music every time he logs on to forums and he will continue to post as maturely and on topic as possible. Might be an ad bot thing. |
I don't wanna sound like a buzzkill but Eliminator's posting is getting ridiculous in the RMOTY Finals thread...

Would there be any mod objection to the creation of an R&M philosophy/theology thread, as it often relates to the content of a lot of music and would be a great way to get it out of the other threads so people quit bitching?

I'd support it, but I think ad hominem should be closely watched. |
