is it just me or is MAYH really bad production? don't flame me if im wrong, it could be my Mp3's (downloaded) :)
Nah, it was definitely cheaply produced. Lopez used a low end Tama Swingstar kit, I believe, if that says anything. Still a great album, though.

Carrionshine 08-30-2006 02:17 AM

Probably the main reason it took me so long to finally get into that album.

Duman 08-30-2006 02:25 AM

That was in fact that album that got me into Opeth

Carrionshine 08-30-2006 02:47 AM

It was actually my first Opeth album. Up to that point, nu metal was all I really listened to. I guess it was too much for my inferior musical tastes at that time. But I simply just didnt like it. I checked out BWP soon after and loved it, but that album never clicked with me until like 6 months ago. I consider it to be one of the best, if not the best album.

VomitStainedCretin 08-30-2006 07:35 AM

I really like the production on MAYH, it adds to the atmosphere, particularly on Demon of the Fall.
Does anyone else agree that the ending riff of A Fair Judgement is just plain awesome? Also the bit in Master's Apprentices when Mikhael comes in with his demon growl right after the clean vox.

Shattered_Future 08-30-2006 11:40 AM

^ What, the start stop riff? That part is ownage, though nothing beats the first 7 words in the song.

I actually kind of dislike the ending of A Fair Judgement. Standing alone the riff is cool, but I don't like how it sounds coming out of that last vocal part.

ALL of Master's Apprentices is awesome - esp. the opening. IMO

but yeah, that bit on Fair Judgment is great.

Hang on, ALL of it's great.:)

I totally agree. That riff is just bone-crunchingly heavy.

the2stranger 08-30-2006 02:42 PM

A fair Judgement is awesome overall, the entire song.
The solo is the best part though, holy crap it's great.

Toaster 08-30-2006 03:12 PM

I've said it a hundred times, but I really dislike A Fair Judgement. The boring intro, the bland verse riff, the terrible lyrics, the uninspired vocal line, and the doomy-but-terrible ending riff all add up to create Opeth's worst song.

the2stranger 08-30-2006 03:15 PM

It's one of my favorietes.
Awesome piano intro, nice build-up, exellent drumming, emotinal solo.

Kronos 08-30-2006 03:17 PM

Not to mention the cool classical style guitar part in the middle....

pate 08-30-2006 03:18 PM

That is an excellent song. Do you not even like the acoustic interlude?

Toaster 08-30-2006 03:23 PM

The awful, self-indulgent vocal harmonizing courtesy of Steve Wilson kills it completely. Actually there is one part I like, the part right before the acoustic interlude, panned to the left is really nice sounding. The first solo is nice too. The second is really bad though. The first few notes are terribly chosen.

the2stranger 08-30-2006 03:24 PM

Of course Each to his own.
I love it, I can't see anything bad in that song. :)

i have never heard that one before. I should stay away then umm. could sumone tell me a good album, if you like Black Water Park.

Prince Charming 08-30-2006 03:26 PM

ITT: Toaster hates on Opeth

Toaster 08-30-2006 03:27 PM

I imagine it's a first impression sort of thing. I mean there aren't any parts that actually sound bad to my ear, they're all harmonious, just parts that seem poorly placed, boring and bland. And I don't hate the song, it's just not up to snuff with other Opeth material.

Don't let me discourage you, Deliverance is an awesome album, and a great starter to Opeth. I'm definitely in the minority for disliking a Fair Judgement, so I think you'd like it also. But to me, the best first Opeth album is BWP.

Kage 08-30-2006 03:28 PM

That song is worse than it should be, by the cool formula it uses. I agree that it's just a little bland, much more bland than I'd expect from Opeth.

BWP is the only one I'd say is great throughout.

Kage 08-30-2006 03:33 PM

Deliverance is a terrible starting album. Take it from me, who tried to start on it and was turned off the band for months. It just doesn't have the epic scope and the lushness of the rest of their albums. It doesn't give you the full picture.

the2stranger 08-30-2006 03:33 PM

The Amen Corner is one song by Opeth that I find bland, the riffs are good, it's just misplaced and incoherent to my ear, whch makes the overal l track lose in power

pate 08-30-2006 03:48 PM

Start with Still Life.

I'd say Still Life.

pate 08-30-2006 03:50 PM

Good man Bennie.

Shadows 08-30-2006 03:55 PM

I do what I can.

I hope Opeth starts working on a new album soon.

the2stranger 08-30-2006 03:58 PM

And I hope it doesn't turn out to be crappy and that is has more keys. :)
