It's really hard to transition between his ranges, a lot harder than it sounds. Add in the growls and screams and it gets really really hard, hah.
It definitely sounds hard, I don't know what you're talking about.

beans 02-19-2008 06:47 PM

negrodamus 02-19-2008 06:50 PM

I got 99% on "Roxanne" doing vocals.

Dimmu Burger 02-19-2008 07:12 PM

I got 100% on Boston, that's right son!

Shattered_Future 02-20-2008 11:28 AM

I got 100% on Dani California...on easy...

:upset:

I rape at the instruments though.

Iluvatar 02-20-2008 11:28 AM

I get like 98% on hard.

game is so much easier than gh3.

beans 02-20-2008 11:43 AM

oh yeah, a lot easier

DJTeeLay 02-20-2008 12:39 PM

So yeah, I'm seeing Protest the Hero tomorrow.
I can't wait.

beans 02-20-2008 12:51 PM

i decided not to drive 4 hours to see them with some shitty *** bands

Dimmu Burger 02-20-2008 03:57 PM

I decided I don't have the money to see them, which is unfortunate cause God knows when they'll be back.

You forgot to add in Chocolate Rain, but yes, my friends and I have also noticed a Chocolate Rain/Sequoia Throne similarity.

Anyway...

After nearly a month of listening to it (nonstop, for the most part) I think I'm ready to give my personal first impression of Fortress:

Favorite Lines:

Interpret the law as aging with its eyesight failing- The second time Rody belts it out its just beautiful

Shah-Jahan the king of kings..- The first occurrence comes as a reedy screech, I love it. The second, the soulful refrain, is amazing albeit a little out of place.

Hellbent on Heaven- When you think about it, it makes so much sense in a variety of situations.

Understand that only dying is this colossal- Holds a bit of personal meaning to me.

For a million years...- Its Fortress' "Maybe someday"

Be grateful you died by Irish steel- Another reedy screech from the cheed, still awesome.

Flidais rides again- Pretty plain line made three times better by the amazing vocals.

Language is the heart's lament, a weak attempt to circumvent the loneliness inherent in the search for permanence- Just...yes, I can't say anything more. Arif's writing shines in Spoils.

As they barter their boulders...- Fun to sing.

Its the neighbor saving face...- VERY catchy.

Oh Goddess who bore what we must have done, bury your daughter and pray for a son- One of the best and most metal lines on the album.

Favorite Riffs:

Bloodmeat tapping riff at 1:15

Luke (I think) on Bloodmeat at 3:13

Harmonic Minor riffery at 0:45 on The Dissentience and the intro of Bone Marrow

The intro to Limb from Limb, for being really ****ing metal

The verse in Spoils

The most obviously metal riff on the album, Goddess Bound at 1:07

The breakdown of Goddess Bound

Other random things I noticed:

Little things that remind you that you're listening to Rody Walker- The "wooh" at 3:53 on Limb from Limb

"Wooh, shake it down", 2:11 on Goddess Gagged. Quite possibly the most fun little add on he put on the album (other than Cece's cameo), I can almost see his facial expression as he was tracking the vocals.

* * *

That's all from me tonight, depending on the reaction this post gets I may or may not post my interpretation of the album's lyrics (it involves the second chunk of On Conquest and Capture and Isosceles).

beans 02-20-2008 10:30 PM

thanks for the breakdown

Static 02-20-2008 10:31 PM

the slap bass at the beginning of bone marrow is amazing

Tyler 02-20-2008 10:32 PM
Shah-Jahan the king of kings
I think it's actually Shah-Jan, because it's not a reference to the Shah Jahan so much as an allusion to him taken in a new context. At least that's what rifraf says.

Benzilla 02-20-2008 11:31 PM

I used google as spellcheck and that's what it spat out.

illpressureurhinges1 02-21-2008 12:02 AM

Some of the lines off this album are amazing...

...60 feathers plucked from sparrow's wings
...bury your daughter and pray for a son
...hellbent on heaven

Amazing lyrics.

Yeah no Shah-Jahan is a real person, but the lyrics booklet says Shah-Jan, which I'm told is intentional, to make it rooted in history but based in fiction (sort of like how Rostam is fictional but also in the song).

One of the good things that's come out of googleing PTH lyrics is that I learned that Shah-Jahan was the guy who commissioned the building of the Taj Mahal for his dead wife, Mumtaz.

Also, there's another discrepancy I've been meaning to ask about. The line "Oh Goddess who bore what we must have done..." is printed in the booklet but so many people misheard it as "Our Goddess abhors us for what we have done, bury your daughter and pray for a son", it doesn't make sense. It seems like the correct lyrics actually take away some of the possible power of that line. If it really was "abhors" instead of "who bore us" the line would be way more bad***.

big80smullet 02-21-2008 10:23 AM

i been listening to fortress heaps more in the car lately. its truly badass. Like so good. its grown on me so much lately

Capricious 02-21-2008 01:09 PM

Ahah aahha, more Canadian PTH dates announced when there all burnt out off their current tour--well actually theres no lapse in the dates. Then maybe Europe(¿) after a short break at home then back in Canada for warped tour. dope!

CHIODOS are the headliners, Protest the Hero in the mid, Fall of Troy do the duties of the opening band
i decided not to drive 4 hours to see them with some poopty *** bands
I love A Day to Remember, I used to love TDWP so I'll be familiar with their stuff, and Silverstein...I probably won't be staying for their whole set.

Capricious 02-21-2008 01:25 PM

Go ahead Benzilla, I would be interested. Seems like a coherent well thought out post, kudos. I'd also like to here someone else's take on the lyrics or the grander interpretive movements.

Dimmu Burger 02-21-2008 03:41 PM

I hope I can get off for Warped Tour, which they are playing all the way through. Anybody know the date for the Merriweather Post Pavillion in Maryland show? I can't seem to find it.

I think that's partially my fault, hah. I wrote it as "abhors us" in my review a few weeks before the album leaked.
