I just realized that "sin" is a wicked song haha, I was listning to it today and its gotta be my favorite song

X3r6x 06-18-2006 05:44 AM

My favourite song from NIN is definitely Only, the videos pretty cool too =)

inassociationwithdeanlearner 06-18-2006 08:19 AM

I think mines gotta either be 'suck' or 'piggy'
Used to be 'the perfect drug' but then i kinda overlistened to it and i find it boring now.

bwnstl 06-18-2006 06:23 PM

I couldn't pick only one favorite NIN song. Maybe one from each album:

Something I Can Never Have
Gave Up
The Becoming/I Do Not Want This/Eraser [I couldn't decide...]
We're In This Together/The Great Below
The Mark Has Been Made/Ripe (With Decay)
And All That Could Have Been
The Line Begins To Blur/Beside You In Time

See? I can't even pick just one from each album.
in music there is never a 100% true interpretation. the essay has elements and interpretation in it, i never thought before, but you should never forget that music is subjective - so its up to you how you interprate it.
other interpretations can help you to see the larger picture, but its up to you if you wanna believe it or not. some of the things i see the same as the author, some others not.
I agree to an extent however, like in literature, some interpretations are more plausible than others. The essay does an ok job of showing how TDS is inspired by existential thought, but the level of analysis isn't really all that much deeper than you would get from a fan imo.

man you did better than me... i just tried that and struggled to keep it to three from each album... lol

preciouswhore 06-30-2006 04:07 PM

Favorite song?
Pffffftttt, sure, why don't I pick my favorite freckle?
I'm not saying that I like everything (Some of it's.....I dunno, just yea) but the majority of their stuff I love.
Hence my being part of The Spiral, anyone else here?

Werny 07-01-2006 04:59 AM

I doubt it's intentional, I doubt Trent's even heard of them, but has anyone else noticed the similarity between The Hand That Feeds and Only Hate (Baresark) by Esoteric?

I'm part of The Spiral as well. Actually, my membership is about to expire in about two weeks or so...I know there's not much going on with NIN right now and it will remain the same for quite some time, but meh, I'm still planning on renewing. Not only do I get a discount for the renewal but I enjoy the boards over there.

Anyway, sorry to bring an old thread back but I was just wondering if anyone's heard anything on the live dvd that was supposedly recorded during the last tour? Or anything new on NIN for that matter? It's been a really long time since I've been on these boards...internet and computer problems.

Kage 08-22-2006 03:32 PM

As far as I know there's really nothing going on right now. Who knows what he's doing, but he's not sharing it with us.

Jaundice 08-22-2006 03:52 PM

I'm pretty sure he's at work on a new album already, including songs that didn't make it on With Teeth.

Kage 08-22-2006 03:57 PM

Hopefully.

He can do better than With Teeth.

repcak 08-22-2006 03:57 PM

yes, he said (over a year ago) that he is writting songs and it should be a solo-project -> that means: only he and his piano. so we can expect another "still" record! that would be awesome

repcak 08-22-2006 03:58 PM
Hopefully.

i always thought you love WT?

Kage 08-22-2006 03:59 PM

I do.

He can do better.

Jaundice 08-22-2006 04:04 PM
I do.

He can do better.
Yeah, With Teeth is great, and has some pretty excellent songs on it, but it lacks the consistency of quality that can be found on the earlier albums.

repcak 08-22-2006 04:09 PM

i still think TF is his best work; he can never top it!

Kage 08-22-2006 04:11 PM

I agree that TF is the best, though The Downward Sprial is riiight there. I hope he can outdo himself, if not in pure brilliance than perhaps in pure beauty and emotion (if the piano/voice thing is true).

Maybe the problem is that now that he's sober, he doesn't need the catharsis that making music provides him, so he's less willing to put as much time, headaches, and effort into his layered expressionist pieces. And what he's left with are his pop sensibilites.

Jaundice 08-22-2006 04:17 PM

I've actually never listened to The Fragile, though I plan to at some point and I have high expectations.

Therefore, at present I'm ready to call The Downward Spiral the best of TR's works that I've heard.

I know it's an essential album, but it's never been convenient for me to go out and buy the Fragile. If I have a good opportunity I will, but lately I'm spending my money on other albums/things.

Kage 08-22-2006 04:18 PM

That album was life-changing for me.

hey! I should go add that to my list in the life-changing albums thread. I forgot about it.

Jaundice 08-22-2006 04:21 PM

I'm not quite expecting it to be life-changing. It could be, but I don't want to set my expectations at any higher than it being a brilliant album, because high hopes only lead to disappointment.

I'm not sure if I've ever really had a "life-changing" album. Maybe albums that change my perspective on music, but not on life. How was it life changing for you, Kage?

Kage 08-22-2006 04:23 PM

Erm, that's hard to say exactly how. It's an intangible thing. It's got to do with abstractions and thought-processes and all that ambiguous stuff that makes an artist an artist and engineers mad.

Jaundice 08-22-2006 04:27 PM

That's understandable. The closest I've gotten to life changing was probably the extreme pre-occupation I've had with some Radiohead and Muse works.

The problem is, if an album grips me from the get-go, I can only hold on to it for so long. If a record is amazing, but not absolutely incredible, then I can listen to it over and over again and not as easily tire of it.

repcak 08-22-2006 05:50 PM

i could never love TDS. i don't know why - the beginning is 10 out of 10; all great songs, but after 'Closer' it has a hangover till the end (-> the last two songs are great again).

The Fragile is 10 out of 10 for whole two discs...

Kage 08-22-2006 07:12 PM

It's the opposite for me. Closer begins the best part of the disc and it's classic all the way through the end.

hollowpainting 08-22-2006 07:35 PM

Closer is such a deep track. It really makes me feel great listening to it. It's their song, in my opinion.

misunderstood 08-22-2006 07:40 PM
It's the opposite for me. Closer begins the best part of the disc and it's classic all the way through the end.
Same here. I love TDS and I've always personally thought that that was the album to top. I think TF is a beautiful/fantastic album but (especially the left side) but there's just always been something about TDS that I can't get over. Most of my favorite NIN tracks probably come off that album including 'The Becoming', 'Heresy', and 'Eraser'.

Jaundice 08-23-2006 03:57 PM

Yeah, The Downward Spiral obviously has some of NIN's better tunes on it. I think it probably gets better after Closer, but some of the songs before are also great. "March of the Pigs" is solid, "Heresy" is one of my favorite songs on the album. But "Ruiner" and "Reptile" are some of my favorites by NIN.

repcak 08-23-2006 04:56 PM

i love the musicvideo of March of the Pigs - Trent Reznor at his best :thumb:

Jaundice 08-23-2006 04:58 PM
i love the musicvideo of March of the Pigs - Trent Reznor at his best :thumb:
Yeah, the video is great. I like the agression.
