"The Plot Against America," by Philip Roth. I believe it won a Pulitzer or a New York Times Book Award or something. It's one of the most superb alternate history sagas I've ever read, taking place from the author's "eyes" in the years 1939 to 1941 in the United States, growing up as a young Jewish boy in New York as an Anti-Semitic, pro-Nazi Charles Lindbergh, American hero, defeats FDR in the 1940 presidential elections. Lindbergh quickly gets on nice terms with the Germans and enforces a relocation and reeducation program for all children of Jewish immigrants in America, where they get sent to rural communities to work on farms and be raised by the Christian families that own them (similar to the Hitler Youth requiring a year of labor in farms to contribute to the greater German good, and the practice of selecting new parents Hitler Youth children who had dissident parents). It's quite scary and never loses its realism for a moment, because despite the vastly different historical conditions it never stops being about Philip's childhood and his family's lives.

EDIT: And now I'm off to purchase my reserved copy of "Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince" and will spend the next day or so reading it. :D

RCA 07-15-2005 08:44 PM

Whoa, that does seem very interesting; I like alternate history stories. Thanks man. :thumb:

I'm going to pick that up tommorow. :D

Dr. Jake Destructo 07-15-2005 08:51 PM

I'm too excited for the Harry Potter book, but eh, they're always a good read, so perhaps I'll ask my mom to pick it up, as she likes reading the books as well.

I'm not sure if I really want to buy the 5th book. Seeing as I only read the first and second I probably shouldn't.

Just watch the movies. :p

Dr. Jake Destructo 07-15-2005 09:01 PM

Just out of curiosity, you know those banner ads at the top of the page for power chord academy? Has anyone ever actaully looked into that? I looked a while ago, and it's some ungodly price for a week long camp. :-/

Oh, and about the Harry Potter movies-The first two were pretty good, followed the book more than most movies do, but the third one was awful. It was way too short, and they left out some important points.

ATM 07-15-2005 09:06 PM

I heard that camp was a rip off.

I think you'd be better off attending GIT.

Yeah, the third movie wasn't made as good. Any news on when the fourth one is coming out?

Jom 07-15-2005 09:12 PM

I never bothered to watch all of the released movies; in fact, I think I only saw the first one... but I have read all the books. I don't read them very "strategically," though. What I mean is that the first couple books I read in a few days, but with Goblet of Fire, I read it in ten hours flat. As for the fifth book, it was so long and so boring, it took me at least two months to get through that without falling asleep.

And plus, with the rate that Rowling is making these books, the last book in the entire series is going to be over 1500 pages or some other outrageous number.

Needless to say, it doesn't take me long to read the books, and since it seems like it's once every two years when a book comes out, I totally forget what happened since then. I need to go to Sparknotes or something for my Harry Potter recaps.

Dr. Jake Destructo 07-15-2005 09:12 PM

Well, I hate to sound cliche, but it really does sound too good to be true. What am I going to do? Show up at this camp, get matched up with bandmates, write, record, and make a video for a song in a week? Sounds a little too "glittering" if you will. :-/

What's GIT, Dragunov?

Thanks. Too bad only five people bothered to post in it :upset:

Heh, poor Madey. One time I got one of those things, but it was a form I had to fill out. It was total giveaway questions, like "Who is your current crush?" and "What's your favorite day?" and so on and so forth. Whoever truthfully answers those things and doesn't expect a prank is dumb as a rock.

Later: surprise! You just got e-punk'd. [so-and-so] knows that your secret crush is [this person], and that you're going to go [to this place] for a date after you ask him/her out, and it's all going to happen on [this day]. Don't you feel stupid?!

So, what I do is fill out complete BS answers. It's fun hearing from those people later on.

I'm just disappointed. Yeah, I wrote a bit, but not as much as I do for my reviews. I think people so desperately wanted to say "tl;dr" but were afraid that Travis' influence spans outside of The Pit or something.

I'll probably wait for munky's and Bartender's customary polite posts, and then let it fall into oblivion. If it doesn't get to a second page, I'm just going to give up on threadstarting in R&M forever or something.
