The last scene of the final Sopranos was so tense.

Matt? 06-10-2007 08:26 PM

i am so emotionally confused from that last scene.

bottlerocket 06-10-2007 08:27 PM

I'm pissed. What an awful ending.

Matt? 06-10-2007 08:44 PM

i'm gonna watch it again tommorow. just the ending. it was powerful but i didn't get it all

santi3hg 06-10-2007 09:32 PM

What the hell happened?

cobert 06-10-2007 10:24 PM

It was open for interpretation. "Emotionally confused" is probably the best way to describe my feelings too.

Maybe Tony got killed by the mystery guy that went to the bathroom, maybe the trucker looking fellow was a cop, maybe they sat down and had dinner as a happy family.

I loved the stone cold silent ending though, like because there was no definite answer, I was shaking for a while after because there was no relief.

I liked the big themes of cultural assimilation and materialism haveing an impact though.

cobert 06-10-2007 10:33 PM

Actually, I just read that the blackout could refer to Bobby and Tony's discussion of 'You never hear it, when it happens' back in Soprano's Home Movies. So I guess thats more evidence that Tony got killed.

Also, I thought the cut from Tony entering the diner to Tony sitting down was weird and definitely intentionally awkward (nothing is done on accident on that show), and I just read that it could refer to the 'Two Tony's' from the season 5 premier, and from 6a when Tony dreamt of Kevin Finnerty: One tony, in a black jacket, enters the diner and see's himself, in a plain shirt (which wee see when tony [or tony 2] is sitting down), and Tony int he shirt meets his family. Its another time we see tony's duality as a gangster (black jacket) and family man (shirt at table).

santi3hg 06-10-2007 10:55 PM

Wow, I need to buy the seasons and watch this then.

cobert 06-10-2007 11:00 PM

It was all very godfather-esque at the ending, the guy even goes in the bathroom to get a gun.

Im still very confused why they brought back that one chick that used to be meadows friend, and also what the cat was supposed to symbolize.

Also, the blackout could be a reference to the episode 'heidi and jackie' or whatever, people talked a lot about the heidi bowl when that aired. Then in either that episode or the next, Tony see's the Jets coach (jets played at the heidi bowl). This all leads up to tension... then cut to nothing. Not unlike:

"With the Jets leading 32-29 with only 65 seconds left in the game, the Raiders quickly scored 14 points to win, 43-32. Meanwhile, millions of American television viewers were unable to see Oakland's comeback. The NBC television network cut off the live broadcast in favor of a pre-scheduled airing of Heidi, a new made-for-TV version of the classic children's story."

LOL

Although Im kind of hoping he's going for the Tony's death angle, because if this was a joke Ill feel fucked over like almost everyone else.
The ending made me want to punch small children.
That ending was incredible.

Edit: The Sopranos has always shown that no matter what happens to an individual, life goes on and the world will be just fine. That's exactly what David Chase was trying to show by cutting to black before Tony could have possibly been shot, or before he could have been sent to prison. Whatever happened to Tony, it doesn't matter, and the world will remain, for the most part, unaffected.

From what I've heard from most people, they wanted a conventional ending, a common one, that sums up what happened to the Soprano family. You should have known from the past seasons that Chase would never deliver an ending like that, and I couldn't be more pleased with the ending he gave us.

cobert 06-12-2007 01:21 PM

Hell yes, I loved the ending. Seriously, Dont Stop Believin was a perfect song.

Wow 06-12-2007 01:33 PM
Hell yes, I loved the ending. Seriously, Dont Stop Believin was a perfect song.
So true. I also loved how it went to black right as the song went "Don't stop." Made me chuckle.

cobert 06-12-2007 01:41 PM

A conventional ending wouldve sucked. Its almost like rather than ending it and making us upset that its over, he chose just to kind of not end it. I was surprised that the ducks form season 1 didnt come back. That was also the most tense 5 minutes of television ive ever watched.

One theory, like I said, is that Tony died when the screen cut off, which provides some clsure. But now actually, im completely content with the 'life goes on' ending. Its like The Rules Of Attraction, where the book begins and ends in the middle of a sentece, because its right int he middle of a much larger story of their lives, kind of like The Sopranos.

Did you watch John From Cincinnati? It has charm. I hope it picks up, because 2 episodes in and all weve seen is a few miracles that had no reasoning behind them.

Matt? 06-12-2007 05:23 PM

i kind of feel, at least my own oppinion now, is that the ending was saying how the sopranos family will go on, the viewers are just cut off from the rest of the story. the series finale is not the end to the story, just the end of the means of viewing it

bottlerocket 06-12-2007 05:54 PM
Hell yes, I loved the ending. Seriously, Dont Stop Believin was a perfect song.
Yeah, so perfect. I guess they called Journey to ask and they were like, "As long as you don't use it in a mass massacre scene then yeah, it's cool."

I don't watch The Sopranos. I saw like 2 episodes then caught the last 5 minutes of the final episode.

Matt? 06-12-2007 06:29 PM

you didn't watch enough to get really into the characters and story

cobert 06-12-2007 06:54 PM

Yeah, then it kind of wasnt worth watching the ending.

Some other forum had a theory about how everything came full circle and they were the same people that they were in episode one, and Tony, even though it seemed like he was about to have some big character changing breakthrough, really didnt change at all. They cited a lot of things about orbits in season 6, the key one being the roulette ball in the casino when Tony did peyote and later yelled 'I GET IT!'.

bottlerocket 06-12-2007 08:06 PM
you didn't watch enough to get really into the characters and story
Exactly.
Yeah, then it kind of wasnt worth watching the ending.
I came downstairs into my living room to watch TV and my sister and her fiancee were watching it. I wasn't going to be like, "YO TURN THIS OFF MAN!" you know? I knew it was the series finale and it JUST SO HAPPENED I caught the last 5 minutes.

cobert 06-12-2007 08:25 PM
