Has anyone here read "The Hobbit"?
I've read it countless times and it's still a personal favorite.
I couldn't get through it.
It was soooo boring.

Everyone should read Jeanette Winterson's Gut Symmetries.
I loved it.
The way she writes is fricken' fantastic.

Blank 01-17-2006 03:01 PM

The Hobbit...boring? :O
Well to each there own. What is "Gut Symmetries" about?

Janeway 01-17-2006 03:06 PM

Three people named Jove, Stella, and Alice, and their quirky dysfunctional relationship.
Jove, Stella's husband, has an affair with Alice. Alice writes a letter explaining it to Stella, and then Alice and Stella end up sleeping together. Some stuff happens, and then the trio decide to take a yacht trip.
Alice's father dies, so she bails at the last minute leaving Jove and Stella by their lonesome in the middle of the ocean.
Jove, being the idiot he is, doesn't know how to drive the yacht, and they end up stranded together in the middle of the ocean.
He thinks Stella is dead, and in order to avoid starving to death, he eats the flesh off of her buttock and abdomen.
Alice gets on a boat, sails out, and finds them.
Stella actually isn't dead, and she gets a divorce from Jove to go live happily ever after.
Something like that.
The plot really wasn't too spectacular, but I love the way Jeanette Winterson writes. You'd have to read it to see what I mean.

Blank 01-17-2006 03:22 PM

Sounds pretty fricken cool.

CausticVodka 01-17-2006 03:23 PM

So it was Sunday.

I was standing in at a fairly small gig, and as I didn't really know these people very well, we went out and got stoned a couple of hours before hand (for the banter). By the time we were due to go on stage, we were all off our heads, but managed to do alright until about three minutes before our twenty minute set ended, when the guitarist attempted a running jump onto a raised part of the stage in order to do some solo or other (not that we could really remember what we were meant to be playing), and overcompensated by about a foot. One second I was desperately trying to remember a fill, the next I'd been knocked off the back of the stage and nearly crushed by most of my kit and the guitarist, who managed to give himself a mild concussion and break three of my fingers. Which was fun.

Sophie's World by Joestein Gaarder
Rubyfruit Jungle by Rita Mae Brown
Amerika by Franz Kafka
On the Road by Jack Kerouac
No One Here Gets Out Alive by Danny Sugerman and Jerry Hopkins
The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx
Fear Nothing by Dean Koontz
Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters

Blank 01-17-2006 03:34 PM

I've been meaning to check out Amerika.
And I might get fear nothing because the title catches my attition.

Janeway 01-17-2006 03:50 PM

Hmph.
Why is rooming so expensive in college??
The school where I want to go is just far enough away that it's too difficult to drive.
Grr.

Blank 01-17-2006 03:52 PM

Eh?
Rich uncle?

Janeway 01-17-2006 03:58 PM

;.;
IT'S NOT FAIR!
My uncle didn't have a wife or kids, so when my sister was born he changed his will to leave his entire inheritance to her. When I was popped out, he never got around to changing it.
He ended up dying of leukemia when I was 9.
So, she basically gets her entire college education free,no debt, AND she's going to by buying a lovely Pontiac Solstice with the cash she's got left over.
I'm going to end up being one of those skinny freelance writers sleeping in the alley behind diners in NYC stealing everything I can just to get by.
It's not fair.
