TBYF was the song that got me into Opeth.
That's a great song, but not exactly the best "introduction song" to the band, seeing as how there aren't any growls in there. Still, it's their 2nd best song ever IMO.

Txus 08-20-2006 11:04 AM

Yeah, it's my favorite Agalloch song. I don't know why but since I listened to that song I got in love with every Opeth material until GR came out, ugh what a boring album.

Thor 08-20-2006 11:10 AM

Ghost Reveries? Yeah, I've grown away from that album. Ghost of Perdition is a killer track, but after that the album just starts to go downhill. There are some awesome riffs here and there, but as an entire album it's the worst thing Opeth has put out.

Toaster 08-20-2006 11:13 AM

I still like it. :upset:

Otherside 08-20-2006 11:14 AM

I never liked GR tbqh

Hated the production if I remember right, havn't listened to it since it came out :O

Thor 08-20-2006 11:15 AM

Don't worry, lots of other people do.

I love how Opeth can make their songs so long and still remain interesting...but GR just didn't do that. They dragged out their riffs for way too long on this album and then I actually became irritated at the song lengths. They need to work on that for the next album, but I'm sure it will be killer, even without Lopez on drums. :(

Stoo 08-20-2006 11:37 AM

Agalloch covered TBYF? Or did I read that wrong?

slaughteredfirst 08-20-2006 12:17 PM

Personally, I love GR, its not my favroite Opeth release that still belongs to Blackwater Park or Still Life.

But GR is pretty good imo.

The production is the one thing I don't really like about the album. For the guitars especially it seemed like a huge step down from BWP and Deliverance. When SW was producing the guitars were crushingly heavy, but on GR there was no power to them.

Still a fantastic album IMO. Mikael's vocals are amazing as ever.

Ehh...I'm more partial to Deliverance than Still Life, but Blackwater Park reigns supreme in the world of Opeth.

Still Life is just more difficult to listen to than Deliverance. I can pop in Deliverance at any time and always get a kick out of it. I really have to sit down and pay attention to Still Life when I put it in, which makes it more difficult, and in the end, less enjoyable.

You read it wrong.

Now that seems to be the total differnce for me, Deliverance is the one Opeth cd I dont really like much, maybe I should give it another try though I havnt listened to it in a while.

JamJar 08-20-2006 04:13 PM

^ I find it that way too. I find Deliverence to be a very difficult album to listen to. Still Life is just perfect to me though. Best Opeth album for me.

Oh sorry, I meant Opeth in the last quote. My bad.

That was me a few months ago. I only thought of it as average, but after giving it some more time I discovered that every song on the album kicks total ***. The riffs they make on that album are just so incredible, not to mention really heavy. :thumb:

Shattered_Future 08-20-2006 08:24 PM

Deliverance can be summed up in 3 words:

Pure
****ing
Evil.

Kage 08-20-2006 10:02 PM

The song is mindblowing. The rest of the album, I have to really be in the mood for and I rarely am.

Darkness 08-20-2006 10:07 PM

Even the mighty Masters Apprentices?

Fix'd.

@Darkness: MA pisses me off. It's really awesome, but waaay too much of the main riff. It's still a great track, but if it had a bit of variation to the main riff, it might be my favorite Opeth song.

Nostalgia 08-21-2006 02:12 AM

 That fix made me laugh so hard.

Master's Apprentice is the only song off of Deliverance that I don't have. When I downloaded it, it's the only track I didn't get.

It is awesome. But the live version from Lamentations is even better.

jpshortstuff 08-21-2006 06:36 AM

yeah MA is pretty kickass. the whole of the Deliverence set on lamentations owns.

Meatplow 08-21-2006 06:36 AM

Does the word Opeth mean anything as such? I've never researched it so i dunno.

I can't remember what book its from but in the book it was spelt without the 'h' on the end. In the book Opet was the city of the moon I believe.

Clunge 08-21-2006 07:12 AM

In My Time Of Need is probably the greatest thing, well, ever.

Am I alone in preferring Opeth's lighter/acoustic stuff to the heavier stuff?

Kronos 08-21-2006 07:21 AM

^^^^^
No mate - I enjoy Damnation and some others better than a lot of their really heavy stuff as well

Thor 08-21-2006 08:53 AM

Agreed. Opening with Master's Apprentices is something they should do at every show. It's just so heavy.

Spoonful of Shame 08-21-2006 10:46 AM

Last time I saw Opeth live they didn't even play it. The was the only thing about that show that I felt should have been changed cause I love that song. Oh well. I can watch it live on the lamentations dvd but it is still not the same as being there.

Yeah, live, it's unbelieveable. When they first kick into the sick intro, I have trouble thinking of a band that sounds that heavy live.
