another matt murphy interview http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L9NLXVJ8Mvs
Matt Murphy's voice is quite high. |
While some people have a distaste for his voice and he sometimes struggles live, the performance on much music is definitely a big aberration. His voice was ****ED - during the interview, he barely spoke, and when he did he sounded like a zombie.
I've seen these guys play many times and in general Rody has got better and better at singing live. This was just a case of catching them right at the end of a tour that had few offdates. He probably shouldn't have sang at all with his voice in that condition, I guess. It might have been interesting if they'd just performed instrumentally - didn't they have to do that for a show or two when they toured the States last year or the year before?
Yeah, they've played instrumentally before. Rody's voice was shot for about a week before that performance. I know it was dead before the show in Toronto. He just killed it; not enough rest, shows every night and he just "partied too hard". The best part of the performance was seeing the asian girl behind the drumkit's face. She was visibly offended by what she was hearing. The performance was tight otherwise, although that's the first time I've ever heard Moe play a song slower live. |
I knew they'd been listening to Sikth!
You just check all those pages ago. The drumming and guitaring is so influenced by them, it's incredible. A brand new take on what was already a completely unique style of guitar, and the lock-in style of the drums with the guitar is so god damn cool it makes me want to tear my own achilles out. |
Probably worthless info:
Saw Arif & Rody at The Fall of Troy's show in Toronto tonight. TFOT dedicated a song to Protest, which was cool considering they said nothing about the bands who opened for them. Rody told me his real first name is James. His middle name is Rody. Never knew that. |
Yeah, James is a lot less cool, which is why nobody knows. I remember when I told them about TFOT a few years ago when both bands were a bunch of snotty punk kids. Oh how time flies.
Where was the gig? I think I was invited but backed out. Was it somewhere stupid like the Sound Academy? |
i think it was the MOD club..not sure though.
|
Nothing is better than some of the things they've said about some of the other bands they've toured with. |

What have they said? I haven't read a lot of interviews. |
Usually they dont say in interviews. Let's just say that if you think the bands they play with suck you're not alone.
Rody did however say, concerning The Devil Wears Prada, "bad band based on a shitty movie based on a shitty book" or something along those lines. |

|
They could open for a band whose fanbase is generally (more) intelligent (than your average fanbase) and open-minded, maybe Converge? That'd be cool.
|

Converge fans post on lambgoat. They're supposed to be assholes.
|
Hey, James is the epitome of cool.
Yeah, it was at the mod club. It was awesome. Edit: Cocaine or anyone else, did you go to the Protest show at the Sound Academy? |
Am I the only one who doesn't mind These Colours Don't Run? I was spelunking through my music when I came upon the only two older songs I have from PTH, These Colours and I Am Dmitri Karamazov and the World Is My Father.
The only thing I find kind of annoying is Rody's old nasally voice. |
Hi my name is benzilla and i just wanted to bump the thread.
... |
I Am Dmitri Karamazov is the strongest thing they've ever written, lyrically and musically. I got tired of These Colours really fast. It lost it's appeal every time I saw them perform it (which is the only time it was really enjoyable for me anyways) and it's just painfully preachy and such. I Am Dmitri is ****ing elite as **** ***.
And nah James I didn't go. No guestlist, no thanks. |
...
Actually, I was genuinely looking for some input. |
I saw these guys at the Kool Haus, when they were on tour with TDWP + 2 Canadian bands, Silverstein and Ill Scarlett. I'm assuming Protest had something bad to say about each of those bands, since you know, they don't sound like Protest.
Anyways, they're a good technical band. |

Then I forgot about them until I kept catching the last bit of the video "Blindfolds Aside". "I Am Dmitri.." is awesome as well. I enjoy the entire CD really, it's nice to go back to the "old school" Protest from time to time. |
Ah alright, was just wondering about how the Sound Academy gig was, considering Rody sounded like a big bag of *** at much music. I wanted to go but didn't end up being in TO by then. I guess I'll wait till, like, September or something.
I totally support the Dmitri Karamazov love. The song's ****ing brilliant, I still listen to it every once in awhile. I've mostly abandoned ACUOS, though. It's what originally got me into the band, but, ****, they've grown up since then and I have too. If I listen to it, it's half for nostalgia. I think Soft Targets is still a pretty damn good song, too, despite the fact that it doesn't really fit with the rest of the re-release. These Colours Don't Run - it always was fun live, but they've retired it for good reason. I think the only people who still request it live just want to seem cool for being 'old school' Protest fans. I finally got ahold of the instrumental version of Fortress today. Yes, I know I'm late to the party. Only listened to it once, but it's very cool to listen to. I find myself singing the vocals in my head while it's playing, but it's awesome 'cause you hear some stuff (esp. bass, syths) that you don't normally hear. |

It was good as far as I know but his voice was just as shot then.
I think the only people who still request it live just want to seem cool for being 'old school' Protest fans.
Yeah, and everyone knows real old school fans request Asperity of Sin or Just Defy. Silent Genocide as well. On that ultra serious note, I'm still bummed I missed the show where they retired Just Defy, way back in 03. Now I hear the Dungeon is closing (or not holding shows anymore)...so sad. |
they are pretty sick
Sequoia Throne owns my ball hairs |
Missed them every time they've come over to the UK, but they've just been announced as part of the Never Say Die tour:
PARKWAY DRIVE - www.myspace.com/parkwaydrive - (Epitaph) UNEARTH- www.myspace.com/unearth - (Metal Blade Records) DESPISED ICON- www.myspace.com/despisedicon ARCHITECTS- www.myspace.com/architectsuk - (Century Media) PROTEST THE HERO - www.myspace.com/protestthehero WHITECHAPEL - www.myspace.com/whitechapelmetal - (Metal Blade Records) CARNIFEX - www.myspace.com/carnifex - (Victory Records) Parkway Drive are fail but pretty big over here. I will be enjoying PTH, Despised Icon and Unearth, though. |
ARCHITECTS- www.myspace.com/architectsuk - (Century Media)
PROTEST THE HERO - www.myspace.com/protestthehero
Only worthwhile ones mentioned imo |
Architects are decent but a little samey for my tastes. Saw them supporting Sikth and I was bored by the end of the set.
|
lol parkway drive
|
I like Parkway Drive...
I want to see Protest The Hero so bad. Architects would probably be pretty cool too. |

Haha, I totally told Tim to call Architects a few months ago when they were trying to figure out who to tour the UK with.
|
Good job dude!
|
I'm sure I had nothing to do with it I'm just saying. That's certainly a better tour than being with Bullet for my Valentine or Silverstein. So what if most of those bands are gay, they're getting close.
|
Really Architects is a good band for them to tour with, and there aren't many bands that I would put them with.
|
I just mean Whitechapel, Carnifex, Despised Icon and Parkway Drive are all really ****ing lame.
|
Parkway Drive is, but I enjoy the others on occasion.
|
They're probably be pretty stoked to be playing with Unearth.
Check out this Protest Stalker site.. if for some reason you want to see a lot of pictures of them as kids: http://protestthat.livejournal.com/ |
moe actually looked like he had a bright, educated future ahead of him when he was little......guess that is what pot do to kids these days

Sign me up for some of that ****.
Wow that site is terrifying. I'd seen all those kid pictures before but the stalking of their girlfriends is just...wow
Yes. But it really looks like there's as much slander as there is creepy stalking going on here. |
