Progress on the Metallica Tetris song is rather slow. And yes I did learn the 8 finger tapping thing, it will come in handy in the future thanks. Recently I've been concentrating on sweep picking and Jason Becker's Air.
Yeah, I've been getting my 3 string sweeps down a bit better so I'm happy about that. I figured out a cool sweeping i-iv-v progression in Am that sounds awesome. I think I'll use that in some of my upcoming song writting. I'll just transpose it some oddball key (like Ebm) just to be adventurous.

It's frustrating as hell to learn, but I think it's well worth the effort. I haven't practiced sweeping in a long time and I should really get back into it.

Me too, some days I can do it, some days I can't and suck balls at it.

8 string tapping?? How does that work?

Bartender 12-09-2005 03:49 PM
Nice work  I'm surprised I didn't send some of those
I just grabbed a bunch of songs that he said he didn't have yet. I managed to hold back on just sending him 15 or so b-sides, which is what I've been listening to recently.

It's ridiculous how good so many of their b-sides are.

Jev 12-09-2005 03:52 PM
8 string tapping?? How does that work?
It's difficult to explain. basically I fret my 4 fingers on the frets I'll use and tap the same finger on the opposite hand accordingly.

Uhh, hope that made sense.

Jom 12-09-2005 03:53 PM

Wouldn't that be eight-finger tapping, then?

lightningmetal666 12-09-2005 03:53 PM
8 string tapping?? How does that work?
No, 8 finger tapping. I found this really cool tap thing that was in Guitar Player back in like may and I showed it to happy. I'll post it here again because it sounds so damn funny.

(keep in mind that all of the upper notes of the pulloffs are tapped.)
(Also I do this with a lot of gain, on my neck pu, and with some delay/a tiny bit of flange just to add to the humor of it)

Oh yeah. Sometimes I type without thinking.

Edit: no wait, I did say 8 finger tapping.

It's all good, heh. I was afraid I misinterpreted what you wrote :-*
Wouldn't that be eight-finger tapping, then?
Did you get the email?

Toaster 12-09-2005 03:57 PM

I meant 8-finger, sorry. That's crazy though, I'd never be able to do that. I'd imagine you need some seriously low action too. I can't do multi-finger tapping without all my strings ringing out, even when I try and mute with my palm.

King_Of_Terrors 12-09-2005 03:59 PM

What exactly is sweep picking?

Deth 12-09-2005 04:02 PM
What exactly is sweep picking?
The greatest thing to happen to guitar solos ever.

Jev 12-09-2005 04:02 PM
What exactly is sweep picking?
Well instead of picking individual notes going down, you kind of pick them all one after another in a "sweep". Also, once you've played the note you should instantly mute it so it doesn't ring out. I heard someone on this forum say that Sweep picking done correctly should sound like one note rising smoothly. Jason Becker used sweeps in basically everything he did.

P.S. I'm loving this Arctica.

Jom 12-09-2005 04:04 PM
Did you get the email?
Yes, I just checked. Thank you again. See response for other polite correspondence.

Also, today was my last day of classes for this semester :-D

It's basically playing triads (a type of chord) one note at a time, while you pick down with all down-strokes, and pick up with all upstrokes. You also lift each finger after you play the note to avoid them ringing together. It has a nice bell-like tone to it and most metalheads and shredders use it as a way to conserve right hand energy while still sounding fast as hell.

it's a bitch lifting each finger without open strings ringing out at speed.
(by speed I mean moderately slow, I'm still a noob to guitar. Been playing year and a half)

Deth 12-09-2005 04:07 PM

Necrophagist uses it a hell of a lot.

Jev 12-09-2005 04:09 PM

I hadn't listened to them until someone posted that video in the Guitar forum. They're incredible.

Yep, that's another band that i want to get into. I've been trying to listen to a lot of DM and BM to get some good influences and some writing ideas.

It doesnt have to be a triad...I dont think.
Anyone want to trade/send me some BM?

Jev 12-09-2005 04:16 PM

I think John Petrucci uses sweep picking that isn't in triads on a few songs. I may be wrong though. A Fortune In Lies is one.

Shadows 12-09-2005 04:17 PM

Sweeping can be way more then juat triads. Actually, I don't think I've ever heard sweeping when it's as simple as a triad.

I'd never learn it, mostly because it's useless for me. I don't know of any bands I like that use it, and I hate tapping to begin with.

I hate tapping too, but I had to learn it because it sounds like part of a video game :smash:

Shadows 12-09-2005 04:24 PM

I hate the way it sounds. I'd only use it in extreme moderation.

Stormrider 12-09-2005 04:25 PM

What does BM stand for ?

Sorry im just jumping in..

Black Metal.
Yeah I don't like tapping. While I was learning how to tap, I broke my middle finger.. haha. So I had to relearn with my index and I suck.
Ouch. For some reason I've always tapped mainly with my index or the edge of the pick.

Shadows 12-09-2005 04:32 PM

I use my index finger. It sounds very clean with the pick, but also very weak. I also have some unusual problems with tapping.

Jev 12-09-2005 04:35 PM
I use my index finger. It sounds very clean with the pick, but also very weak. I also have some unusual problems with tapping.
What kind of problem?

Jom 12-09-2005 04:36 PM

I tap with my middle, because when I was watching how to play a certain song, the guitarist used his middle. So, I tried to emulate him.

Shadows 12-09-2005 04:36 PM

I can't tap chronologically. By that I mean I can't go in order (high note, middle note, low note). Whenever I tap, I always end up using some kind of odd order like high-low-middle. I can tap fine that way, by when I try to do it the standard way I get very slow and sloppy.

Deconstruction 12-09-2005 04:38 PM

Practice.

Heh, I used to try and copy Kirk Hammett when I started out.

I have the exact same problem, it's why I hate tapping but some songs actually have tapping like that.

It's far easier to tap high, low, middle. Try going high, low, middle, low, high etc. It's a nice change from the standard EVH style, and it's not hard.

lightningmetal666 12-09-2005 04:40 PM

It sounds a bit sloppy when i do it but I learned how to do this cool tap where it goes high-middle-low-open string-low-middle and repeat. If you do it kinda fast it sounds sweet.
