They're more "progressive" than Opeth's other albums. The shifts in timing and tictures are much more abrupt and dramatic. I guess what makes it good in my eyes is that, unlike later Opeth, the songs are less predictable. Every song is packed full of great moments and melodies and you never know where a song will go. The acoustic parts especially make the albums for me. I can't really talk you into liking it, you'll just have to give it time yourself. Orchid is my favorite Opeth album.
I agree with you completely.

I'd go with My Arms, Your Hearse or Still Life as my favorite though :D.

More structure than the first two, less predictability then the later ones.

Shattered_Future 08-13-2006 04:12 PM

I love my Still Life tee. :D

I got one other from their '06 tour too...

And I have come to the conclusion that To Bid You Farewell is one of the most emotionally moving songs ever. It's absolutely stunning.

Mikedrummer 08-13-2006 04:16 PM

opeth sucks

i am the robots 08-13-2006 04:18 PM

Yeah it is.

I know this is horrid blasphemy, but me and my friends always used to get high and freestyle rap over the intro of To Bid You Farewell on the way home from school.
opeth sucks

Fuck.. that is great!

I only have a Ghost Reveries shirt.
The one with the candles on it.

I'm having a dilemma though.. I can't seem to get into Orchid or Morningrise at all! I get so bored and the songwriting really shits me to tears.

Can someone give me directions at what to focus on and what makes you think these albums are fantastic(or at least good!)?
It's like I listen to these albums and I don't mind them, but, every other release is so much better..and also I'm thinking maybe I just don't 'get it' when it comes to those albums. :/
Morningrise has really long songs on it so that might be why? Really long for Opeth so you know they are LLOOOOONNNNNGGGG. So maybe thats why? Orchid I have never heard though so I cant help you with that.

the2stranger 08-13-2006 05:28 PM

Long songs are the best, more yumminess.

Not "really long for Opeth"... the only longer than average song on Morningrise is Black Rose Immortal...

Hahahahahahah

I can just imagine the lyrical genius flowing forth from a bunch of stoned white boys from a small town in PA!

i am the robots 08-13-2006 08:15 PM

Hahaha, it was just fun, nothing too serious... we were all extremely bad... I can make stuff up as I go along screaming, but I can't rap for all it's worth.

/3 Opeth shirt owner, one signed :D

Wow, totally ment to say shirt, not shit.

penelope weird hands 08-15-2006 01:15 AM

Shadowsfallen - Yeah, good point about the uncertainty of the music and I definately agree with the acoustic brilliance.

slaughteredfist - Length of music has never really deterred me from listening to anything. I just feel like it isn't clicking with me and keeping my attention.

I'm getting to a point where I'm overanalysing it all too much...
Bah! :)

Thanks for the input, guys.
They're more "progressive" than Opeth's other albums.
I wouldn't say that at all. More "melodic," maybe...they were essentially a melodic death band. Opeth have gotten *progressively* more progressive with each album.

My thoughts exactly. :thumb:

I'd never heard Opeth before and I Dl'd Blackwater Park. What a great song. Is there any more like it? I've downloaded a few that I really don't care for. I really don't like Black Rose Immortal, the vocals kind of suck in that compared to Blackwater Park imo.

Avalanche. 08-15-2006 04:44 PM

Bump.
I can't find anything like BlackWater Park :(

Darkness 08-15-2006 04:46 PM

Get anything from the BWP album, the Still Life album, and the Deliverance album.

Stoo 08-15-2006 05:25 PM

Download the entire Blackwater Park album. Then Still Life.

Jude 08-15-2006 07:36 PM

What do you mean "like" Blackwater Park? All the songs on that album are stylistically and sonically the most similar to it, while the songs on Deliverance are most similar in terms of the amount of heaviness. As the guy above me said, BWP and Still Life are the albums that are most similar to the song BWP.

csl316 08-15-2006 08:37 PM

By The Pain I See In Others is somewhat similar to BWP. starts off heavy with cool riffage, gets quiet, ends in a massive explosion of awesomeness

it's not exactly the same by any means, but only a handful of Opeth songs are

BRI is off of Morningrise, which is a much earlier album. Mikael's vocals definitely improved big time inbetween there. As others have said, look for the rest of the BWP album - Bleak, Lepar Affinity, The Drapery Falls, etc. Also, look for Still Life - The Moor, Godhead's Lament, Serenity Painted Death, White Cluster. Off of Deliverance, look for Deliverance, Wreath, and Master's Apprentices. The earlier albums have poorer production, but you might appreciate My Arms Your Hearse anyways...look for "Demon of the Fall," "When," "April Ethereal," and "The Amen Corner." (my personal recommendations...everyone has their favorites) If you're into softer material, then that's a whole different list. :)

I love that song, at first I hated it though.
The dissonant piano melody is just mesmerizing

I'd give it a 7 out of 10. I use to dislike it somewhat but i think its a good song now, not great but good. Deliverance I'd say is great.

the2stranger 08-16-2006 05:11 PM

Deliverance is awesome. indeed
Especially the outro.

Shred Danson 08-16-2006 05:26 PM

Deliverance and Damnation are both great to bone to.

But I think I've mentioned that before :p
Download the entire Blackwater Park album. Then Still Life.
support the band man

"Buy" the entire blackwater park album then "buy" still life

Stoo 08-16-2006 08:07 PM

1. I legally own all 8 albums.

2. No point in him "Supporting" a band he ends up not liking.

3. Did I say ILLEGALLY download?

pate 08-16-2006 08:10 PM

Download, then buy FTW

i am the robots 08-16-2006 08:13 PM
Download, then buy FTW
I agrees :).

Jude 08-16-2006 08:18 PM
I agrees :).
Me too, sort of...although the best feeling ever is buying a new album when you barely know any of the music on it, and discovering it all on the actual CD/vinyl. Downloading first takes away from that.

Stormrider 08-16-2006 08:21 PM

I agree with Jude. I love buying an album in which I don;t know all from it. That;s been the case with everything yet :p

But there's stuff I want that I've heard the whole album.
