Martin Lopez is the drummer for the Swedish progressive death metal band Opeth.

He joined the band in 1998, after leaving the viking metal band Amon Amarth.

His work can be heard on the albums My Arms, Your Hearse, Still Life, Blackwater Park, Deliverance, and Damnation as well as Opeth's last release, Ghost Reveries of 2005.

Martin was born in Sweden and later moved to Uruguay. Being South American, Lopez incorporates a variety of styles into his playing. Latin influences are strongly present, as well as some jazz influences. His versatility is shown when he deftly and quickly transitions from soft, melodic, tasteful drumming to brutal, double pedal-powered death metal beats.

One beat that can be found in many of Lopez's songs is a double paradiddle, played on the ride and the snare, often over double pedal or the bass drum imitating the ride. Lopez tastefully places this beat in a wide variety of Opeth's music.

Martin currently endorses Premier drums and Sabian cymbals.

Lopez's infrequent problems (such as a panic attack on Opeth's "Lamentation" tour) and diagnosis with blood poisoning are the cause of a rare disease which he has. Rumors that this is a result of cocaine use are false and unsubstantiated. Although this does bring up question as to if Lopez will be able to continue his career with the Swedish Death Metal band.
