nuh uh, i knows my geography D:

fatbandit 12-23-2011 05:21 PM

Joel.

You ever worked with cutting up drum breaks and making awesome new songs from them?

Trying to program some drums with a friend of mine for some new music, but I wanted to go beyond just programming a MIDI sequence in, and use audio samples. I want to do some amen fuckery, but I don't want to use the Winstons' amen sample. I've programmed an amen break into Reaper, and put my own samples on. Messed with the velocity and humanised it all a little, then bounced it down to a wav. I want to cut the wav up into 8th note chunks, then rearrange them to make new breaks.

All is well. Except I can't cut them into perfect 8th notes because the hits don't land exactly on the beats (this is probably because I humanised it a little, but I imagine the original amen sample has the same problem, as it was played by a human!), so I get horrible stuttering and stuff. If I cut them earlier/later, then my clips are the wrong length and don't line up properly to make full bars :/ I'm already cutting to a zero point to minimise unwanted artifacts, so I don't know what to do about it really :( I know people do make breaks this way though, so it's kind of frustrating.

Convectuoso 12-23-2011 11:58 PM

Put them into Pro Tools and Beat Detective them? Lol I know you don't have pro tools and there will probably be too much shit going on to do it easily.

Um, it kind of needs to be made Elastic. Like it confirms to the grid no matter what tempo (within reason). It's how apple loops and shit work. I know how to do it in Pro Tools but I'm lost in Reaper.

My favourite way to make loops is to use lil' old Ez Drummer, just the default kit, which actually sounds amazing, the room is really good. Take a couple of MIDI loops and drag them from Ez Drummer into Pro Tools and rearrange them into a 4-16 bar loop. Then smash it through my outboard compressor and bounce it down to a stereo file and add electronic drums and basses and shit from there. I find MIDI soooo much easier than dealing with cutting regions/clips.

ESSENTIALLY, you need to figure out how to turn it into a loop that will change to match the tempo of the song.

If I was you I'd only worry about the kick drums, allign those to the grid, then find the tempo the loop is at. Make it work to that tempo and then make "elastic" or whatever Reaper uses.

I'll post some loops and shit that I've smashed through my compressor, sounds amaaaazing.
Racquetball is always a fun one that isn't too strenuous for someone who doesn't play sports much.
Tore a bunch of ligaments in my right arm playing racquetball a few years back. and then when they finally healed, I tore my left arm up skiing on the last day the fuckin' hill was open.

The best.

Convectuoso 12-24-2011 06:08 AM

LMAO. I knew that was going to happen, when I posted it was on the 800th page :(

fatbandit 12-24-2011 07:23 AM

Joe's been slack with the MEW gifs on every page rule for every page since he first posted them. Sadface.

I consider that my Christmas present from MX. Cheers Ben!

Merry Christmas internet-dudes! It's 2am on Christmas day, and I'm about to wrap some presents.

BenJammin 12-24-2011 08:05 PM

Merry Christmas! I'm sitting around with my roommates, getting really drunk and Skyping with our families back east. It's pretty awesome.

fatbandit 12-24-2011 08:18 PM

Sounds good! I think tomorrow's gonna be pretty dull after present-opening and dinner-eating. Christmas usually is! Nice to have a few days off though.

Watched Four Lions just now too. It's a right good film. Highly recommend it!

Convectuoso 12-24-2011 11:23 PM

All I want for Xmas is MEW naked, in my bedroom, gagging for it.

But I have a bottle of Russian standard Vodka instead, which suffices for now.

BenJammin 12-25-2011 02:49 AM

I hear ya, Joel/ Got fairly right sauced today, and even more tomorrow.

My boss is not going to be happy when I go to work on Monday.

fatbandit 12-25-2011 05:57 AM

I kept getting tipped in beer at work the other day. I was too polite to tell any of them that I don't drink so I just have bottles of it stacked up at home now haha :/

And MEW would be an ultimate present but she'd be better in clothes. You get all the fun of unwrapping your present then! ^___^

FunkMetalBass 12-25-2011 10:14 AM

I use 40 posts per page, there have only been a few pages. I'm not slacking THAT badly.

But here you go:

fatbandit 12-25-2011 03:30 PM

I approve. Those abs man, those abs...

Been back in touch with probably my best friend from like 5 years back recently. He only lives down the road but I've barely seen him for ages. He lives at home with one of his mates, but it turns out they're moving out on the 1st of January with two other people who are both cool too. They've asked me if I want the last double room in the new house. But they move in on the 1st January. It's a bit soon, haha. I'm seriously thinking about it though. I like being at home with all my comforts, but I'm 23, and I don't want to be here when I'm 24, if you know what I mean!

gaslight 12-25-2011 03:48 PM

Always strong arguments for both sides of moving out of home.

Pros: You're "supposed" to get out and make your own way. You'll feel better about yourself while you're struggling because you'll be able to look down on all the people who haven't moved out yet.

Cons: It's a huge drain financially to try and build any momentum in life with all the rent to pay and whatnot. Just make sure your income is sufficiently higher than your rent. Don't be paying above 50% of your income in rent. 25% would be an ideal ceiling.

fatbandit 12-25-2011 03:52 PM

I've looked at it, and they're saying it's £225 a month inclusive of all bills and stuff. I need to get some better numbers off them, cuz I want to see a breakdown of all that to see if all the water, gas, internet (I won't own a computer if I move lols), council tax, insurance is included. I'm guessing the last two wouldn't be. But when that's all in with what I pay now for food, phone, buses, other groceries etc, I think it'll come out at about £550, and I make about £800. So it isn't unreasonable or anything.

gaslight 12-25-2011 03:59 PM

550 squiggles? That's about $845 in dollaridoos, roughly $210 a week, that's pretty sweet :).

Do some play budgeting for a laugh, I always work out a lot of my accounting week to week on paper (rent/bills/tax/loans/savings/income/etc) but I'd never thought of what my food budget might be. Turns out it was a lot .

fatbandit 12-25-2011 04:23 PM

My food costs me 200-230 a month :p It used to cost more when I ate junk :|

I eat 5 meals a day with meat in 4 of them though, or else I could be considerably cheaper :/

BenJammin 12-25-2011 11:08 PM

God, that's expensive.

fatbandit 12-25-2011 11:54 PM

So worth it.

gaslight 12-26-2011 04:26 AM

My food costs a bundle haha.

I think I worked out I'm probably close to $20-$30 per day during some stretches.

Mr. Pickle 12-26-2011 04:34 AM

This is a great thread!
