Thanks man. |
Hey, I'm new here and I have a pretty specific request. I'm really digging black metal and its variants a a genre, but I can't respect lyrics that promote senseless hatred/satanism/anti-christian themes, "I-recorded-this-myself-in-my-bathtub" production quality. (I realize that some production concessions may be necessary, but I just don't want crap that sounds like it was played by cripples inside of a tin can.)
I want to be clear here that I'm NOT trying to start a debate about religious ideology, or to push an agenda. Enjoy what you will, and please don't criticize me for respectfully seeking your advice. Thanks. Here are a few bands I'm currently into: Alcest Borknagar Carach Angren Darkspace Enslaved Negura Bunget Wodensthrone I'm also a huge fan of viking and/or folk-metal, which is frequently tinged with black influence. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. |
Well, it seems like you're not too worried about production if you're digging Darkspace, so you should probably get some Paysage d'Hiver next.
You'd probably like Windir, too. Arntor is my favourite. Belenos - Specilege Epheles - Souviens-Toi etc Honestly, I wouldn't sweat the lyrical themes as much as you're doing. It isn't worth it. |
What's some hardcore or metal that has tasteful and well done solos?
T.O.O.H (depending on what you call tasteful I certainly think they are) Vehemence (not really many solos but mad tasteful leads) Blind Guardian Demilich (again, depends on what you call tasteful) At the Gates Immortal ( see: vehemence) Opeth (hate to say it but its true) |

I hate most black metal mostly because the stupid ideology that it's bad if it has good production, but this album is godlike. It doesn't have the BEST production, but it's still definitely very listenable. All the instruments are clearly made out and stuff. To be honest the production is perfect for the mood of the album. Also, look into Arcturus- Aspera Hiems Symfonia. It could be considered black metal for the most part but with a good dose of weirdness on top. I think you'd like it if you dig Borknagar. edit: OH **** how could I forget Immortal. Get Sons of Northern Darkness by them. Crystal clear production, heavy as ****, and it's not satan-y in the least (but it is about grim and frostbitten tundras so idk if you're into that) |
Wow, I did not expect a reply this quickly, much less two. Thanks a lot, guys. I'm familiar with Arcturus, as I listen to lots of prog and very avant garde stuff as well. I'll look into the rest of everyone's suggestions by tomorrow night. \m/
I don't want to debate the lyrical themes, but that's the one point I won't budge on. I've collected hundreds of sick metal albums over the years without having to digress into concepts I find morally repulsive; it won't hurt me to miss out on bands who just want to piss the world off. Also, I don't hold production against Darkspace because the awful distortion and the muddy vocals/drums actually fit the music thematically. They come across not as something done to "purify" the music, but to paradoxically enhance it. And it really adds some weight to stretches where the guitars override the synth and the drummer goes into overdrive. Dark Space Vol. III is brilliant. |

Lyrics in metal are not important. It's a proven fact. Hell, you have to look them up to tell what they even are half the time. Any enjoyment I get from metal is from the music, not the lyrics. Vocals in metal are basically just another rhythm instrument imo |

If lyrics didn't matter, if they didn't convey a message, then there'd be no need to write songs about raping people with chainsaws, burning churches or oppressing and enslaving other races. All three are themes unfortunately found in metal, which I simply choose not to support.
TzarChasm
lolHuh? >_> |
oh come on everyone wants to rape someone with a chainsaw at some point in their life
|
Yeah, but once you log out of Xbox Live that feeling should probably go away rather naturally...
|
most of the time with black metal I can't understand the lyrics anyway
|
i have more black metal bands in my library than i do any other genre with like 170 something. sludge comes in a close second with about 130

if you enjoy that album and find the production listenable, there are countless other bands within the black metal genre then where production values shouldnt be an issue. |

I don't know how you'd define "tasteful," necessarily, but I've personally found that melodeath is a breeding ground for wicked lead lines and gorgeous solo work. Anything ever written by Kalmah (except perhaps "Moon of my Nights") will suffice, as may anything on either of Mors Principium Est's first two discs. Insomnium doesn't use a great deal of solo work, but when they do it's usually quite haunting. Imperanon has some terrific stuff as well. Depending on how far you're willing to stretch your definition of "metal," you might want to consider Kamelot, Redemption and Riverside. Oh my God, does Riverside have some gorgeous guitar work. But those last two are far more progressive rock than true metal. |
lol
|
Different musical tastes are hilarious
I was actually gonna suggest Kalmah as they do have some pretty sweet solos but I figured it's a little shreddier than he wanted |

I can't believe I forgot to list Ikuinen Kaamos' "The Absence," from their Closure EP. You can download it free from their Myspace page, and in addition to being an amazing song, it ends with a mesmerizing 2:05 guitar solo. I put it on A-B repeat today and listened to it for over 40 minutes on end.
lol
Insightful. I think we all learned a lot from this. |
Rec me some metal that gives you chills!
|
Akitsa - La grande infamie
|
Sorry, i mean chills from its epic-ness, not its scary-ness... if that even makes sense.
Kinda like when i hear misery signals and cream my pants! |
Rec me some metal that gives you chills!
Carach Angren - Death Came Through a Phantom Ship Darkspace - Darkspace III Apocalyptica - Inquisition Symphony, "Coma" Dark Tranquillity - We Are the Void, "Arkhangelsk" Dead Soul Tribe - A Lullaby For the Devil, "Stairway to Nowhere" Epica - Design Your Universe, "Tides of Time" Ikuinen Kaamos - Closure Opeth - Blackwater Park; Damnation The list goes on and on and on. Music isn't about sound, it's about feeling—about an experience.
Sorry, i mean chills from its epic-ness, not its scary-ness... if that even makes sense.
Most of this list still qualifies, particularly the latter half. |
defs about experience, after the burial may be some of the most talented musicians out there, but their music has no foundation or emotion to it at all... its kinda like they're just showing off

seriously?? |
Toss up. Two bands tie, but each is supremely different from the other. They top the list for different reasons:
Insomnium, and here's why: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f9QCK6l6gKg Kalisia: Their home page can be found at www.kalisia.com. Check their samples at their Myspace. Good luck finding a stream for Cybion anywhere online. |
seriously??
with dreams to be a king, first one shalt be a man! |
Insomnium is ****ing sick, thanks man
|
Insomnium is ****ing sick, thanks man
Dude, they are hands-down the most emotive and beautiful metal band the world has ever known. The folk influences in their music are second to none, and their guitar leads haunt my dreams. If you could bottle "Mortal Share," I would bathe in it. Other songs to check out: Medeia The Elder Daughter of the Moon Bereavement Mortal Share Last Statement Against the Stream Weighed Down With Sorrow Too many songs to bother with links, sorry. They're all on Youtube, though. |
MANOWAR! everyone loves Manowar, they just don't know it yet.
