jeff_se 02-12-2006 11:38 PM

My name is Jeff , I play guitar and like to record songs with my friends. I have a few guitars, but I like my Charvels the best. I use a POD XT when recording, and a Marshall Mode 4 to play otherwise. I record using either pro tools or a Korg D-1600 (1600 is easier to use for a quick session). I learned to play when the 'Big Hair' bands of the 80s were popular. The last thing I wrote was a Steelers victory song http://mysite.verizon.net/vzes3hyl/ that shows some of my 80s blood. Sort of like Alice Cooper Meets AC/DC and ZZ Top. I no longer aspire to be a professional musician, but I sure do enjoy playing for fun.

having seen a thread koke showed me at recording.org, i have to say that we're very lucky here.

They have a user who's basically Ned (lmost people should remember Ned) to the power a hundred and twenty five- who gave the classic quote "No mixer under $5000 is worth putting a signal through" Instead of telling him where to stick it, people were agreeing with him! It was extremely distressing for me to see the voice of reason flamed unneccessarily by many people in a "jump on Zakath's back" fashion and i even registered to send him a PM of support, only to find PMs were mebers only.

Reast assured i've no intention of going back. Such ignorance of what it's like not to have thousands of pounds to spend on gear is sickening.

Ignorance?
Hah.
I've been running a pro studio since before you were born.
The exact quote was $20,000. Don't insult my experience by suggesting I'd use any $5,000 POS for anything more than running cans through.
You're just another schill for behringer. Coyotetrax repeatedly attacked my opinion and responded with sarcasm.
Budget gear doesn't mean crap gear.
What do you run your set-up on?
Probably some cheap POS with a few POS micpres. If all you know is soda pop then cheap wine will taste great. When you buy a brick you'll realise where the extra money goes. Micpre's make or break a recording. I'd rather record drums with 1 mic and a great preamp than 7 on a POS behringer. I've looked at this 'board' and half of you are just reps for POS companies that steal designs. Especially Kocaine, do you really trust someone who would buy a phonic mixer? Hah, if he was worth his salt he'd be using 16 bricks instead. When guys can appriciate quality then feel free to come to RO and swallow your pride.

Aes820 02-13-2006 05:56 PM

...

The best bit is when he responds to a post regarding a $150 microphone by suggesting seventeen $400 preamps.

Good one.

Dear "Kurt".

I have a little test for you. If you have allready seen this, then well the test is void, but here's hoping you havn't done this.

I would like you to tell me:

Which is the more expensive microphone? A or B?
Which is the most expensive preamplifier? 1, 2 or 3?
Which is the least expensive preamplifier? 1, 2 or 3?

Here's the soundclips.

That was beautiful. If you are such a great forum lurker you would have figured out by now that 50% to 75% of the people here are ages 12-20 and only about 5% of the total posters on here are serious about recording techniques at all. Therefor, he does recommend a phonic mixing console solely because of the fact that these people are a) low budget b) don't give a flying fuck or c) cannot tell the difference between sound qualities. Is he saying that he would recommend a phonic over an entire professional quality setup. No. He is merely suggesting that phonic mixers aren't to bad for he money they have at there fingertips. I'll give you that yes, a brick is a fine piece of recording equipment, but suggesting 16 of them on a DIY site over 1 piece of "shit" is uninformed, excessive and frankly the stupidest n00b post I have seen in a long while. And I post in the Bass Forum's Beginer Questions. On the fact that you fart dust and therefor know more than all of us combined to thirteenth power, fuck you. Just because you learned these techniques as the wheel was being invented doesn't mean that they have changed at all or we've missed something. If anything a professionally trained and qualified audio engineer would blow you away with his knowledge and you might be put into your place. When you learn how to not be an asshole and suggest apporiate equipment on budgets that usually range form $0 to $300 come on over to mx. We are a family friendly and welcoming forums to n00bish fucktards such as your self. Consider yourself throughly pwned. Fuck off and die.

Diatonic Dissonance™ 02-14-2006 01:15 AM
not much you
Not much. Music was so awesome today.

We did interval construction ( ) and the teacher was like "alright I'll write eight up on the board and when you do them you can go. The people that are new to theory can do them in an easy key (G major), and the others can do a harder key (E major  )" so she would write one up and she'd be like "major third" then underneath she'd start writing the next one and it would be like "perfect fifth" and at "perfect fi" I'd already done the first two, haha.

So then I was allowed to go (about 15 minutes left) and I went to get a coffee and I came back and these girls were like "we're done. Can we go too?" and I was like "come on Mrs Simpson, let 'em go. You let me go" and she was like "nah, that's called favouritism!" - I swear my head was so swollen.

Then at the end of the lesson I was chilling with her (I talk to her for a few minutes before/during/after class) and we were talking about species counterpoint and stuff. I was like "so, you'll be teaching us species counterpoint next week yeah?".. laughter ensued.

An art preamp might be better than a behringer preamp but they're still a POS. I wouldn't run anything through any of those preamps, or any of those 'mics'. The minimum you should be using for recording is a brick. If it's not a brick or more expensive then you shouldn't be recording.
When you learn how to not be an asshole and suggest apporiate equipment on budgets that usually range form $0 to $300 come on over to mx.
Budget doesn't have to mean crap gear.
What's wrong with saving up for a year and getting something that will last?
Crap lessons only apply to crap gear.

You can stoop to personal attacks if you want but in the end I'm the professional. I guess it must be great to be young and know everything yeah?

KF;

I have no idea of how you found this post/forum, but I have absolutely no intention of replying to anything you say. Feel free to take this as a "great victory" if you like, but frankly, I can't see anything worthwhile coming from discussion with someone such as yourself. I'd rather say nothing than needlessly hurl insults either way and I'm curious to see if you're capable of the same.

gaz12369 02-14-2006 12:51 PM
If all you know is soda pop then cheap wine will taste great too.
Excuse me? So what are you implying there? That you can't tell the difference, or that I can't tell? or that anyone else can't tell? I was asking you, mr.pro, if YOU could tell me which of those are the most expensive sounding. I would really like to hear your opinion, just for the sake of it.

More to the point, are you suggesting that guitarist at home buy a Radar tracking system with a 48 channel Neve desk aswell as £50k's worth of outboard just to record a song?

As moaner (AR) says, im not that bothered, but it would at least be "decent" if you actually justified your points of view.

Btw, arguing over the internet is like winning the paralympics... you may be a winner, but your still retarded:thumb:

Gareth

p.s. I don't mean to offend with that joke, just making a point to mr.pro here, I dont think that anyone actually cares what he says myself:p

KKKKKocaine 02-14-2006 01:02 PM

Haha, I am awesome.
I thought moaner would have seen through the 16 bricks bit :p

The soda pop bit isn't a direct kurt quote, it's a blue bear sound quote as to why phonic mixers suck, (it ignores basic logic such as the fact that most of the world get by happily on soda pop and cheap wine, and that expensive wine is an aquired taste and finally, that not everyone likes any wine)

C'mon guys, you gotta think on your feet. You think I would've let Kurt come and insult phonic? I check this thread every day!

gaz12369 02-14-2006 01:30 PM
omg. That crappy poem gave me a headache
I think its just because it has a lot of different sounds in it, like plosives and sibilants. Good for testing how a mic deals with certain "difficult" sounds

Trigger_003 02-14-2006 03:17 PM

Haha good times in the community thread.

Jeez Gav, your class is way ahead of us (as is to be expected). We're still doing time signatures.

We had to write out 4 bars of each of the following
3/4
4/4
6/8 (omgz compound time)

I started calling it compound time when I got back from doing erands (that's my reward for knowing all this theory...?) and everyone's like "what the?"
Then we all had to read out a bar from each of our examples and clap it out. When it gets up to me for 6/8 I say I've got something like "a crotchet, quaver, duplet". Once again we get a "what the?" - even though quite a few of them have probably played it before (one girl is on grade 7 piano and plays chello - I thought she would've known). Then our teacher says "I'm glad you know that Trea but it's too advanced for this. Keep it simple please"
I was!
... simple for me ;).

This class is going to play some games with my head (and really test my boredom), I swear.

Atomic Rain 02-14-2006 04:25 PM

Koke:

Let him say what he likes. If he spends his weekends having "least hiss" competitions with his little friends just sit back and enjoy the fact that you record for music's sake and not for that of bragging about your pre-amps to the chick in the bar.

I thought you might appreciate this piece of advice, harry. Kurt, don't read this post, it's not for you.

I was gonna buy a car one day, but then I thought; wait a minute! If I stayed at home all day every day for 5 years and went without food on thursdays I might save up enough to buy a nice car that'd last me a long time that I could learn to drive in.

There'd be no point me buying a cheaper car earlier on; it'd accellerate too slowly and there's no point learning to use things like gears because more expensive cars will have automatic transission and driver aids.

If you can't afford a good car; there's no point going anywhere! I wouldn't go anywhere in a car that cost less than £30,000. If you can't afford a Jaguar, hell, there's no point you even learning to drive.
