Meh, leave it.
Don't leave it...I'm just about to upload. I'll edit this post with the YSI link when it's done.

EDIT - http://s9.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=2757DEEG9EJVG3B25QA1LG4JHZ

Here ya go fellas. It's not the whole tracks, just the connections which could work live. Not that the discord of This Dying Soul and The Root Of All Evil are actually different!

I would have put all 3 tracks running into another on here, but that's like a 30 minute audio track, and even at 64kbps, it's still a 15 meg file which I can't be arsed to upload. Maybe another day.

Mr Benners 07-03-2005 02:25 PM

You absolute legend. That is EXACTLY what I was talking about.

Expertly done too.

I think I might have just signed my own death warrant on the Metallica thread :p

The fact is the redifined the genre and took it to a whole nother level w/ heavier, faster riffs, vocal grit and versatility...and more stability than most bands can compare to....and to all you Megadeth fans out there(not say i'm not a fan) name one tune by Mustaine that rocks as hard and fast as Battery!..yeah exactly.

I'd have to agree with Digital Love on that one

Metallica is NOT definitely better than Dream Theater. In fact, let's just turn that around a bit, and the truth will be told: Metallica is DEFINITELY NOT better than Dram Theater. I'd like to see Lars keep up with Portnoy's playing. Kirk and Robert are fast; James is great at what he does (solid rhythm playing), but that's about it. Metallica is a great band, but technically, they can't touch Dream Theater. The DT level of ability (playing AND songwriting-wise) is just way above 'Tallica.

Yeah, about those discords.

I always have preferred to learn everything (no matter what musical instrument I'm playing) by ear. However, the one thing that I can never seem to work out myself is those kinda discords. WHY THE HELL IS THAT?!?!?! They sound great, but are confusing to the ear.

I can't remember the one from 'This Dying Soul', but the ones at the start of 'The Root of All Evil' are just tritones (diminished fifths).

Dammit, I already bought tickets for London because I thought they were the only dates they were doing. Wolverhampton would have been much easier to get to.

Unless I go and see them 3 times..... hmmmm - my heart says yes but my bank account says no...

Prince of Darkness 07-09-2005 06:27 PM

If I could I would see DT ANYDAY!!!!!

---- Off topic -----

Is it just me, or does Never Enough sound EXACTLY like Hysteria bt MUSE, or any muse song???? LaBrie rips Bellamy's voice so badly. He sucks.
And Intro to Octavarium is copy from Shine on ya crazy diamond by PINK FLOYD. they do like to copy from others dont they........tut tut.....
Still love 'em though.

nowitzki 07-09-2005 06:37 PM

Panic Attack and Never Enough do sound very heavily Muse influenced. MP is a huge Muse fan, he said last year that Absolution was his favourite album of the last decade.

Triangle 07-10-2005 03:58 AM

Portnoy did. Never Enough sounds exactly like Stockholm Syndrone to me. A big rip off.

Ad Absurdum 07-10-2005 05:58 AM

Yeah, I had heard people saying they were similar before I bought the album, and when I heard 'Panic Attack' it sounded a bit like 'Stockholm Syndrome' and I thought that was it. Then came 'Never Enough', with exactly the same riff as 'Hysteria'! Also, I thought that the clean parts at the start of 'Sacrificed Sons' sounded like 'Sing For Absolution', the vocal melody sounds similar.

red barchetta 07-10-2005 07:06 AM

'never enough' has the same feel as 'stockholm syndrome'. the verse sounds very similar, they both use a similar key, they are both in drop-D tuning, and the structure is similar too.

labrie does do a matt bellamy rip-off vocal style in Panic attack - the bit where it goes 'run, try to hide, overwhelmed, by this complex delirium'

I'm booking as soon as they go on sale, I've been checking the site every day for new dates. So I'll be seeing Vai on the 20th, and DT on the 26th, both at the same venue.

National chaos sam 07-10-2005 09:08 AM

Id love DT to do an album comprising of final fantasys music. that would rock, and they would do it perfectly..

I can just imagine listening to the mako reactor theme, and barrets theme tune. the softer ones like interrupted by fireweorks and tifas theme would rock too.

I think that'd be pretty cool but i think there's already a band that goes around playing FF music.

Tifa's theme reminds me of Space Dye Vest. Or the other way around. Something like that.

Has anybody heard about the Scenes From A Memory play?

In November it is being perfromed. I'm not sure where though.

A DVD release of it is in talks.

That's going to be gay. It's a good story line and all, but Dream Theater being associated with a play, I just can't see that.

ytsedrummer 07-11-2005 12:53 PM

Its official. I saw it on the Dream Theater message board. A link is put up for the theatre's official website and everything. They say its official.
This has probably been discussed before, but, the best songs in Portnoy's song trilogy are, from favorite to least:
The Glass Prison > This Dying Soul > The Root Of All Evil.

Too bad they get progressively less good, but what's really interesting is listening to all three of them in a row. Pretty mind blowing.
Aren't "This Dying Soul" and "The Root Of All Evil" more parts added on to "The Glass Prison"? I heard that from a buddy of mine, and you can even hear the similar lyrics in both, but I need verification :p

Yep, it was an idea of Mike's to write about the twelve stages of over coming alcohol addiction. These three songs are all about it.
anyone gona chekc out gigantour?
I live in Nanaimo, British Columbia (yes, thats in Canada eh) and I got super pumped when I found out that they're playing in Seattle (just south of the border) and when I asked my dad, I got a big fat no. He said I can't go because it's in Seattle. What is up with that? It's a ferry ride, a bus across the border, and then into Seattle. Christ you'd think I was going to Pakistan to see some sort of Pakistani death metal band  . Anyways, I'm still trying to talk him into letting me go, and :chug: to anyone else who's going! :thumb:

Hahaha thats awesome! Those are probably my favorite DT songs aswell. I don't know if this is already out there, but I wan't to own a pub and call it "The Thirteenth Step"

Prince of Darkness 07-11-2005 01:34 PM

Have you seen in the Booklet of Octavarium, 'The Root of All Evil' has 2 parts in it, numbered, VI and VII? But The song Octavarium has 5 parts, starting at I and ending at V, see what I mean? Octavarium ends to the start of Root of all Evil! Thats sooo Pink Floyd!

Firecracker 07-11-2005 01:38 PM

Ideal set-list for "An Evening In With Dream Theater" in October.
It had to be in October, with the 'Oct' thing going on. (Octavarium)

The Root Of All Evil
Pull Me Under
The Great Debate
6:00
These Walls
Metropolis Pt. 1
Panic Attack
Endless Sacrifice
Under A Glass Moon
Fatal Tragedy
In The Name Of God
Wait For Sleep
Take The Time
Octavarium

hallowed_ironmaiden 07-11-2005 01:45 PM

good set list, but Pull ME Under, in my opinion, always has to be last for an encore

the root of all evil is the sequal to the glass prison and this dying soul. if you look at 6DOIT's and ToT's booklets, the two songs are also labeled: the glass prison is labelled I - III (there are 3 sections), this dying soul is labelled IV - V (there are 2 sections), and thats where the root of all evil comes in, from section VI.

Octavarium just happens to have 5 sections.

Prince of Darkness 07-11-2005 02:07 PM

Oh. I didn't buy Tot and 6DOIT, so I wouldn't have known. thanks.
