I'm going to the show this Saturday in VA.
|
Just got Panic tickets for 11/24 at Royal Oak, MI! Wish I could make the Milwaukee run but don't have the funds.
Also got Greensky Bluegrass tomorrow night, then Perpetual Groove (the show I'm throwing) on Friday night, gonna be a good couple days. |
Nice, let me know what you think of Greensky and Pgroove. Haven't seen Greensky, but Pgroove was really good the last time I saw them.
Not really a jamband but I saw Roger McGuinn (leader of the Byrds) tonight which was an incredible show. He still has his incredible voice and I was blown away by his guitar playing, especially on Eight Miles High. |
Further, thoughts?
I heard a stream of last night's 1st set, sounded pretty good and got a lot better as it went on. The Jack Straw and Let It Grow smoked. |
Got the first night rolling right now, just got into the Jack Straw. They sound pretty good so far, I'm thinking as this show goes that things will really fall into place. It'll be interesting to hear the next two nights as well.
|
first night gets a lot better. Set 2 is even better. Huge Scarlet Fire.
|
Hi everyone!
I thought i would share something awesome i found. There is an environmental non-profit called Artful Change and its mission uses art and music events to raise money for social and environmental causes. ---- http://www.artfulchange.org/ The founder is part of this jam band called Jay Trainer Band and he pays at this events with other local bands and visual artists. Check out them playing an event for Artful Change at 111 Minna Gallery in San Francisco: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfmceKux9rY Their next fundraiser is an online/virtual fundraiser for the international day of climate action on Oct 24th: http://www.artfulchange.org/onlinebenefit.html |
check out this incredible Sugaree- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMXuwTB9dfE
Phil is dropping bombs everywhere, Bobby's rhythm playing is fantastic, and Jeff and John have terrific solos... I'm liking Furthur. Lunch how were Greensky and Pgroove? |
Listened to the rest of the first show through Scarlet>Fire. Well, actually I skipped Sailor>Saint (see, they're just like the real Dead!). Althea and Scarlet>Fire were hot. With a little more work these guys could be real serious. I wonder what the future holds though. I've heard rumors about a run in NYC, possibly at the Beacon. Bring on the tour! John K sounded great once he loosened up a bit and started to assert himself.
Greensky brought it like they always do. Robo if you (or anyone else), have a chance to see them, definitely don't pass it up. Great, real bluegrass music from guys who are willing and able to "jam" but are well-versed in the traditional roots. PGroove was really hot too, better than I remember them being. It was a great kick-off show for our group. Turnout was strong and people there had a ton of fun. They opened with an insane Teakwood that went on and on (in a good way). Other highlights were This Must Be the Place (Talking Heads song) and Three Weeks. I even got a chance to talk with Brock when we were hanging out before the show, he's a really cool guy. |
Go back and listen to the Lost Sailor > Saint Of The Circumstance man. It's not one of my favorite song combos but this version is really incredible. Beautiful guitar by Kadlicek, they really nailed it.
That sounds like a couple of sweet shows man. Pgroove do a great cover of This Must Be The Place, that must've been cool. And meeting Brock Butler must've been pretty fun. |
Im gonna see Panic in Kansas City TWO nights in a row! i just saw them play back to back 3hour sets in Denver over the summer
|
Nice. I saw them twice at 10K. Always such a good time. I'm going to the Royal Oak show this November but wish I could do more of the tour. Milwaukee is always nuts.
|
check out this incredible Sugaree- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMXuwTB9dfE

John and Phil jamming together is awesome.
|
The hot box
Just saw these dudes play in Milwaukee. Awesome band, featuring a trumpeter. Lead vocals by an Emcee named Vision. If you like hip hop and/or jam bands, you should definitely check them out. Check out their myspace page, http://www.myspace.com/thehotboxmusic, to hear the tracks. If you like what you hear, there are free downloads at http://www.ilike.com/artist/The+Hot+Box+(Hip+Hop). Definitely worth your time.
"All I juana do is sit around and smoke weed all day!" Seriously, check it out. |
Hey guys, I've started a music blog, check it out- http://chinacatsunflower.tumblr.com/
I've posted some music up there, just put up a link to one of the best dead shows ever, and I'll be posting more regularly. Just posted another great show. |
Dude that's super sweet. I'm pretty excited to hear these Furthur shows.
|
Cool site Robo! You got some great stuff up there already. I'd add 8/6/71 to the list of essential Audience tapes. Hard to Handle = one of the best single Dead performances ever.
|
thanks guys, i'll be adding a bunch more stuff soon. 8/6/71 is definitely up there... the recording is certainly better for sure, it sounds like a soundboard. But 6/24 is a way better show in my opinion. 8/6 has the Hard To Handle but 6/24' is just mindblowing for that entire electric set. I haven't listened to 8/6 in awhile though so i should probably do that soon.
does anyone listen to Hot Buttered Rum? |
It's funny how I knew exactly which Hard To Handle you guys were talking about, that is definitely a mindblowing solo by Jerry. Have you guys ever seen the Live In Copenhagen dvd? 4/17/72, it's pretty sweet. Got a real cool China Cat>I Know You Rider, and they really tear it up on One More Saturday night. Worth checking out.
I just saw my first Umphrey's show on Friday, they blew the roof off the place. Got STS9 and Telepath this Friday, and the Disco Biscuits on the 28th. I can probably only go to one, and I'd prefer to see Bisco but I don't think anyone else can make it, so we'll see. |
i've seen a bunch of clips of the 4/17/72 show on youtube... not sure if the whole show is up there or not, but lots of songs are. everything i've seen has been great.
|
hey guys, just uploaded a show by Reconstruction on my blog- http://chinacatsunflower.tumblr.com/
One of Jerry's most interesting side projects, live show soundboard. |

Just downloaded Reconstruction from there and waiting to listen to it a little later. Never heard of this sideproject but I'm always down for some Jazz/Funk, especially if it involves Jerry Garcia. Keep up the good work..
Got STS9 and Telepath this Friday, and the Disco Biscuits on the 28th. They are tearing up this tour, simply put. STS9 (to my surprise) is actually playing some good stuff on their tour but they're still nowhere near as sharp as they used to be and I hear their new lights suck balls. And by the way, how is the Kalamazoo State Theatre? I'm considering doing a big Bisco Midwest run Kalamazoo->Madison->Minneapolis(maybe)->Chicago(Halloween, SHIT YEAH)->Urbana,IL |

I wasn't really that impressed with Peaceblaster and have been hesitant to see STS9 for that reason, but their latest sets sound like they've been mixing it up a little bit. And I did say I would see them the next time they came around since I missed them at Rothbury. Now on the other hand, I said the exact same thing about Bisco haha. And Bisco tears that **** up. They've got the improv element that I love so much, and that STS9 doesn't seem to have much of anymore. So it basically comes down to this: I can afford to see both, it's just a question of whether or not I can get some people to drive to Kzoo with me to see the Biscuits. And I've never been the the Kalamazoo State Theater, but it sounds like it would be a cool place to see them. Also, speaking of Bisco, you guys ever listened to the Above the Waves jam from the New Years Eve 07/08 show? Gets me so pumped everytime I listen to it. http://www.archive.org/details/db2007-12-31.mk41-rm.flac16 |

In my opinion, the best imrpovisational act in the scene. Tribe used to improv but I really feel like they've lost the enthusiasm to do so and now prefer to play songs more with their laptops than their actual instruments. Pretty sad considering they had so much ability and potential. Well, hopefully both you and I will find our way to K-Zoo State Theatre to rage it.. And YES, that Waves from 07/08 NYE is sick! By the way, let me know if you want any headie Biscuits soundboards, ha.. I have a lot from '09 that I would be happy to spread/send your way.:smoke: |

And if you haven't heard their latest single yet, you may be even more disappointed (but I guess you can't assume what the new album will be like just based on one single). I'm also down for some Bisco SBDs if you feel like uploading any. I have a handful of shows from '09 (2/15, 4/20, 6/27), but only audience recordings. I've been noticing they are seriously on fire this year, that gives me a lot of hope for these Midwest shows.. |

Let me know if you want any shows in particular because I have almost all of the earlier '09 shows. Otherwise I'll post some that I've been diggin and that I think are the choicest SBDS. |
The only one I can think of off the top of my head is 1/29/09, cause I saw a sweet video of Story of the World (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iEbbb4qDZ74). But if you have any preferences or favorites, I'm down with whatever.
And I don't know if I can get you anything in return, but let me know. Thanks dude. |

i saw hot buttered rum last night, it was a really great show. They have a lot of fun playing music and it makes the show a really good time. Great vibe, and some nice playing and singing. Check them out if you get the chance.

I just posted a cool John Cipollina bootleg on my blog, check it out- http://chinacatsunflower.tumblr.com/
If you don't know who John Cipollina is, he was the lead guitarist of Quicksilver Messenger Service, a late 1960's psychedelic San Francisco band. He's a really brilliant guitar player, QMS could really jam... Jerry plays pedal steel along with Bobby on vocals on some of these recordings... so they are worth downloading for that alone. added a great Jefferson Airplane show too. |
new age jam
http://bit.ly/UgGhT
STS9... they are an jam band that uses electronic elements to their stage performance and production... http://bit.ly/UgGhT |

Yo midwest folks, any of you in for Railroad Earth in Chicago or Madison this weekend? I'm trying to make at least one work. Should be worth the 6 hour megabus ride...
|
I finally got around to listening to Railroad Earth. They're damn good.
|
Hey Robo, my friends and I are doing Railroad Earth on Halloween in Royal Oak, Michigan. We're going as the Grateful Dead circa the mid-80's. We figure most people there will get it (our Jerry, Phil, and Brent are pretty obvious. I ended up having to be Bob due to my general knack for Bob impressions and potential for wearing cut-off jean shorts with a tight purple polo).
|
That sounds awesome man, Railroad Earth on Halloween would be something. Wish I was going, have fun.
I imagine you'll be pretty easy to recognize as 1980's bob. |
**** I should go to that, Lunch. I don't have plans for Halloween, Royal Oak is like 20 minutes away. How much are the tickets?
|
Hey Fellas, sorry for the late notice....
Disco Biscuits are coming to KZOO and celebrating their new CD release tour!!! Join on somewhere if you can. WED. OCT 28th KALAMAZOO STATE THEATRE |
**** I should go to that, Lunch. I don't have plans for Halloween, Royal Oak is like 20 minutes away. How much are the tickets?
probably cheap enough that it will be well worth it. In Madison, tickets are $25 and includes Great American Taxi opening along with an after party show by the Macpodz for free. railroad earth seem to like good deals. |
