Wouldn't it be great if you just happened to stroll down Saville Road one day in late January 69 and seen that rooftop concert? Wow.
*heart attack*

clown_phobia 02-11-2005 01:27 AM

Wow that would have been fantastic. The closest to seeing it i've come is seeing homer simpsons and the b-sharps playing their rooftop concert.
Same here. Other than Let It Be and Get Back, it was a letdown for me. Abbey Road > Let It Be.
Thats why the Beatles recorded abbey road, they wanted to end on a better note and didnt feel Let it Be was their best, still, Let it Be has really really grown on me, I've got a Feeling, and Two of Us, are 2 awesome songs

The way Abbey Road ended (with Her Majesty) sucks, though. They should've just cut Her Majesty all together, and ended it with "The End"

clown_phobia 02-11-2005 04:15 PM

That was a joke :) I think it was good.

The End was intended to be the last song on the last beatles album, but as a joke they pasted her majesty on the end there.

so, when listening to it, the listener listens to 'the end' and thinks it is the last song (as her majesty is not on the back of the original british lp). The listener thinks "it's sad that beatles split up" etc, and "that album is good".

Then, he/she hears her majesty (as a joke).

Sgt._Joker 02-11-2005 05:43 PM

Her Majesty Owns!

its awesome, very good way to go out,

That's true. Both are great albums though.

What do you guys think of the Let It Be Naked album as compared to the original? I don't feel it was any better or worse, but I probably end up listening to it more than the original. I really like Dig a Pony on Naked.

Sgt._Joker 02-11-2005 06:10 PM

oooo, we have had this conversation before, :P

but non the less, i like both but enjoy hearing John Lennon doing intros to the songs on the original,
but i love dont let me down on naked ;)

Negatory. I love Her Majesty.

Woodstock 02-11-2005 07:40 PM

Most people didn't even no Her Majesty was on the album when it first came out. Since it was a delayed song, most people took the record off the player assuming it was over.

Delayed track = hidden track?

Would anybody else agree with me in saying that early Beatles was too poppy?

I personally prefer the later stuff, like the White Album.

I prefer their later material also, but I still like the older, poppier stuff.

I can only stand their poppy stuff to a certain extent. Love Me Do is great though.

clown_phobia 02-11-2005 10:21 PM

Help still counts as a pop album even though some of the stuff is fantastic :thumb:

Help, Yesterday etc.

ultraspamboy 02-11-2005 11:42 PM

I'm reading A Day in the Life right now. I've only gotten up to the earlier period but it mentions how although they were poppy they were original. Most artists in the period just did covers of other people's songs but the Beatles were doing original songs. Musically, because they didn't have much musical training or something, they were unique because instead of using that chord progression from like every period song they used other chords that didn't fit in the context, prompting Bob Dylan to call them "outrageous". Bob Dylan also introduced the Beatles to marijuana.

Seafroggys 02-11-2005 11:52 PM

Some of the poppier Beatles had some nice melodies. All My Loving, Please Please Me, etc.

Hard Day's Night, She Loves You, Ticket to Ride are also great numbers (btw I don't have any of the older albums, only the #1 album, so my knowledge is limited).

But the God song is In My Life. Also Nowhere Man. Also You Won't See Me.

Of course, this was at the end of their 'poppy' period.

hmm, i'd have to say no, by todays standards, Yes, i'd just leave it at their early songs where very upbeat, and poppy.

i must admit i listen to their later stuff more then their early stuff, but i really think the early stuff is good,

On other matters,
would i be right in saying that "she Loves You" is the first song The Beatles started experimenting with Lyrics and music. if you watch the Beatles Anthology DVDs Paul McCartney says something along the lines of:

"we first started thinking about being different... i think it was "She Loves You" i said to john 'oh whats something that hasnt been done before' and we finally thought we'd try and write a song as if it was a conversation with some one else"

does anyone know better?

All three of those are on Rubber Soul. Rubber Soul, if considered one of the poppy albums, is proof that the poppy era has some songs every bit as good as the later era.

xxxRoCkJuNkiExxx 02-12-2005 12:30 PM

I like a lot of the poppy era (Twist and Shout pwns), but I don't think I would love the Beatles as much if they didn't come out with their later stuff.

I rented the Anthology DVDs yesterday. I couldn't take my eyes off of the screen. Amazing. I absolutely LOVE the Beatles. I haven't watched them all yet though.

I haven't seen the extended videos. All I've seen were our recordings from when they original aired (which were much shorter from the released on video/dvd versions)

Woodstock 02-12-2005 01:58 PM

The Anthology seems to go more in depth to the early years than the later years. I was a little upset by that.

gmoneyguy 02-12-2005 01:59 PM

I know more about their later years then their early, so it would do me some good.

DeusExMachina 02-13-2005 03:42 PM

I should get those. Or just rent them, as they're pretty expensive is my understanding.

TheSeeker625 02-13-2005 05:05 PM

I have a question:
When the Beatles broke up, did they remain friends, or did they stop talking to each other? Did Lennon and McCartney talk after the break up, or did Lennon die angry at McCartney?

Lennon and McCartney were the best of mates, although they did go through a rough patch during the break up, John released his, anger, and anything he might have against paul with his song "How do you sleep?"

George Harrison must of stayed good mates with John because he went and played Guitar on John's Albumn "Imagine".

and you hear Ringo saying (on the beatles Anthology) when he talks about the break up and their feelings for each other:

"We were just, 4 really close mates who loved each other very much"

i hope that helps you ;)

DeusExMachina 02-13-2005 05:21 PM

Aww... thats all happy and cuddly and stuff.

TheSeeker625 02-13-2005 05:27 PM

Yeah, the whole Beatles mystique gives you that feeling.

DeusExMachina 02-13-2005 05:55 PM

Off topic, but am I the only one who is having some problems with MX right now?

Walrus Gumboot 02-13-2005 06:44 PM

I haven't been let on since last night

Oh! You guys! I saw the funniest thing today:

I was in an antique store and there was this really strange black and white photo in a frame on a wall. The picture was of three people in civil war clothing, one man in a suit with mutton-chop side burns (v. 1870's), an asian guy in a civil war uniform, and a very very ugly woman with a big nose(shockingly ugly) in a southern-belle sort of dress fanning herself and smiling coyly at the camera.
What does this have to do with the Beatles, you may ask? Well, the asian guy in the uniform looked sort of familiar, maybe like Yoko Ono, and then I looked again at the lady in the dress and realized it was John Lennon, at which point I shreiked with laughter, causing people to stare. I guess it was an original photo, and it cost $1200 so my guess is it was pretty rare
