Cow Palace '76 is really good; I definitely recommend it.

Phil Lesh's Langerado Sets.

Yea, Cow Palace is great. Really outstanding sound quality. The Playin' in the Band at the end of the first set is one of the best post-hiatus versions I've heard. 22+ minutes, they really explore some great territory. 76 is an underrated year. So many interesting set lists and creative jams. Also, they continue to explore some spacey territory, certainly not like the years before the hiatus but a lot more than 77, when they tightened everything up. Check out the beginning of the Cow Palace set II: Sugar Mags>Eyes>Wharf Rat>Good Lovin'>Samson>Scarlet. Unreal sequence with delicious transitions and performances at every stop. Then of course the Help>Slip without Franklin's and a Dew to cap everything off, excellent. Triple encore as well.

I have some bomb shows from '76.

Do you have either 1976-06-24 - Tower Theater, or 1976-07-18 - Orpheum Theatre? Really excellent set lists.

Just getting into the whole jam band thing recently. Downloaded American Beauty by The Grateful Dead just now so I'm gonna give it a listen.

UmphreysHead 03-16-2008 01:13 PM

That album is stupendous, definitely my favorite studio Dead.

It's straight up a greatest hits album almost. Friend Of the Devil, Sugar Magnolia, Truckin', Ripple/Brokedown Palace, Box Of Rain (though not nearly as popular).

Yea, I've heard those. All the June shows I'm familiar with are really solid - the Beacon Run, Boston, Chicago, etc. 6-14 and 6-29 are especially tasty. 6-14 has a great first set (Cold Rain opener is always solid, Big River and LL>Supplication smoke, plus the ~20 minute PitB goes deep before touching down) and the Music>Crazy Fingers>Dancin>Cosmic Charlie in set II is delicious and uniquely 76.

The July run at the Orpheum is really good as well. 7-18 caps everything off and that second set is a marathon. The Let it Grow>Drums>LiG is top shelf, but they just keep it going with Wharf Rat and then the ridiculous Other One sandwich. The Stella at the end is also one of my favorites.

UmphreysHead 03-17-2008 04:26 PM

6-14 is stupendous. I remember being in aw when I first heard the second set.

Lunch 03-17-2008 10:32 PM

I'd recommend getting a hold of 8-4 if you haven't heard it. Another unbelievable setlist but more notably Phil is WAY UP in the mix, and he dominates throughout the show.

barbarian 03-18-2008 07:54 PM

haha you guys are so classic there's no way i could keep up

UmphreysHead 03-18-2008 09:37 PM

Yo I just got the sbd for 8-14, you weren't kidding about Phil.

UmphreysHead 03-30-2008 12:49 AM

I downloaded all of the nights from the Grateful Dead Movie (1974-10-16 - 1974-10-20), and they are amazing. The Wall Of Sound makes them sound so incredible.

Liquid Force 03-31-2008 02:47 PM

UmphreysHead 03-31-2008 05:49 PM

Hilton Head Island in SC...its a brand new venue and moe. will be the first ever act, should be good

UmphreysHead 04-01-2008 10:50 PM

Damn that's awesome. Be sure to get the tape of it afterwards.

robo2448 04-08-2008 11:48 PM

I remember this thread. Cool beans.

Enjoy moe. I saw them in January, it's a fun time. I never liked their studio stuff, and didn't even love the live recordings I had before the show, but seeing them in person with the lights and atmosphere makes it much better.

Anyone dig bluegrass jambands in here? I'm hopefully seeing Hot Buttered Rum on Thursday.

And Jackie Greene's new album is amazingly good. Check it out if you like good music.

UmphreysHead 04-09-2008 09:41 PM

Yeah man I love bluegrass. Keller Williams, Yonder Mountain, Blueground Undergrass, David Grisman, all sick bands. HBR sounds like fun. Haha. I'll have to check that album out, what is the name of it? Is it similar to what he does with Phil Lesh?

robo2448 04-10-2008 11:59 AM

It's called Giving Up The Ghost. Jackie Greene was never a deadhead before joining Phil and the album isn't "jammy" like Phil and Friends but it's a terrific roots rock album in the same vein as American Beauty or The Band's early material. He's such a good songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. The album is remarkably consistent, which to be brutally honest, is somewhat of a rarity in the jamband world.

Also, you should check out the Sans Souci Quartet, who are opening Hot Buttered Rum tonight. They're another sweet bluegrass band. I have a radio show here at college, and they've agreed to drop by and play an hour set on my show in a couple weeks. Should be a lot of fun.

UmphreysHead 04-10-2008 02:40 PM

Nice man, yeah I'll have to check it out. He really is a good guitarist and has great ideas.

My Favorite

My favorite of all times are Smash Mouth and Maroon Five!

UmphreysHead 04-10-2008 06:50 PM

Leave.

robo2448 04-11-2008 06:28 PM

That's not very nice. And unfortunately didn't get to go to hot buttered rum since my friends suck and backed out of going and I didn't want to go alone.

UmphreysHead 04-11-2008 10:37 PM

Oh lame.

robo2448 04-14-2008 12:22 AM

But I did buy Derek Trucks Band/Santana tickets for 420:cool:

By the way if you want to hear more details about the new Jackie Greene, I wrote a review of it for my school paper- http://media.www.themacweekly.com/media/storage/paper1230/news/2008/04/11/TheArts/Jackie.Greene.Brings.Americana.Back.To.Life-3315764.shtml

Check it out. There are 1 or 2 typos cause I wasn't completely sober when I wrote it and the editors don't do their job but whatever.

UmphreysHead 04-14-2008 08:21 PM

That was a really well written review, I tried to search for the album on torrent sites, but I couldn't find it. I'll try later I guess.

**** yes! (I realize that it's backwards).

Doctor D. 04-15-2008 09:04 AM

UmphreysHead 04-15-2008 06:09 PM

Hahaha, I'm pretty excited. Should be awesome.
But I did buy Derek Trucks Band/Santana tickets for 420:cool:
Santana is ****in horrible, but Derek Trucks is cool to get stoned to.

robo2448 04-16-2008 12:05 AM

I've seen Trucks twice, once with Clapton and once with the Allmans. It'll be sweet to see him with his own band though. Everyone sees Derek Trucks as this fantastic guitarist, which of course he is, but they overlook the terrific music that he makes with his band. The Derek Trucks Band is much more than just a Derek Trucks guitar solo, since all of the members are really talented. I can't wait to see him with the Allmans again over the summer and if he ever toured with Clapton again, I'd be there in a second despite the outrageous prices, but I'm looking forward to seeing The Derek Trucks Band instead of seeing Derek Trucks as a sideman. As for Santana, yeah he's kind of gone astray the last few years, but their material from the sixties cooked, and when they play that material live now, it still cooks. And fortunately, he still plays a lot of that material live. There will be some less enjoyable newer songs, but when he goes off on some crazy jam during Soul Sacrifice, Jingo, Black Magic Woman or some other old song, I'm pretty sure I'll be enjoying it. And looking at the setlists, Trucks and Carlos have been doing a couple jams together each show, which is what I'm the most excited about. I can't wait for the show.

Umphreyshead, I can hook you up with Giving Up The Ghost if you want. And when are you seeing DSO? I've never seen them but heard they're really sweet.
