Which Petrucci solo?
It's the intro lick to Universal Mind. This is a hell of a thing to try to tackle not having played at all in nearly 6 days.
Okay, after a week of barely touching my guitar, I desperately need to start playing hours a day again. Now I've been challenged to learn this Petrucci solo in a month.
Heh, are you gonna get dollas if you pull it off?

No, but my confidence will be boosted considerably.

Not to mention the bragging rights.

Atleast its just solo, I have have to learn multiple songs in one week periods.
Atleast its just solo, I have have to learn multiple songs in one week periods.
That's true. I don't think I'd be able to handle the insanity of learning multiple full songs in a week.
Heh. That's gonna take some practice.
Mos def. I'll be more impressed than anyone if I get this.

Yeah I need to know a few songs by next Friday :(

Cain 02-15-2006 04:33 PM

Shadows, that's nothing. I had to learn the whole of "Little Shop of Horrors" in two days to perform in a pit orchestra consisting of myself and a piano player--the most bare-bones of ensembles--and this with only a paltry three hours of rehearsal time, and a score so messy-looking--handwritten photocopies of a fake-book-style arrangement--I couldn't even tell what to play much less when.

I'll be repeating this multiple times, no doubt, when I start teaching at this arts camp in the summer.

Shadows 02-15-2006 04:37 PM

 Woah, that's a huge piece to learn in such a short time. I'm sure I'll have to deal with that kind of stuff in the future as I get more involved with any music ensembles I can find. Then uni. :(

Come on now, you guys are making my once daring feat look like noobsplay. Now I think if I don't learn it I'll be mocked and shunned for the rest of my eLife. :p

Either way, I think I need to get this for myself. Through the past months I've been seroiusly slacking on guitar for a variety of reasons, and I hope this is the thing that really gets me back in the flow I used to be in.

Its not that hard anyway. It sounds alot harder than it is, like alot of LTE stuff. I think you should be able to pull it off.

BTW, i have more of TFOMI down now, ill record more and send you it later.

i am the robots 02-15-2006 04:43 PM

Just go at it son, it'll come flooding back!

Arucard 02-15-2006 04:46 PM

A solo i could never grasp was the one in The Beast And The Harlot. Flipping all over the place, i gave up and learnt a nice bit of generic sweep wankery.

I can sweep now, and its seemingly all i do. I really need to only put it in when it fits :(

Getting put on a deadline for learning stuff is a huge test of skill, and if you rise to the occaision you'll probably feel pretty good, but I've never known it to not be exhausting. Those two days were some of the worst I've had ever, and I was completely unlike myself, snapping at people, and then I didn't want to play guitar at all.

Luckily, you have much more time. :p Anyways, you've gotta love to practice to practice well. I play less than I used to, but I'm pretty adept so I never really forget much of anything.

EDIT: Sweep picking would seem like such a more useful activity to me if the guitarists that did it made full use of the arpeggio's potential to determine harmony. So many guitarists in the metal genre just play the arpeggio to whatever chord is underneath them and don't do anything to really provide additional color or tonalities. Probably because the technical focus in terms of how many strings you use, etc. makes it a little less present in the mind of the player, but even so, sweep picking could be such a more useful musical device than it is generally: most often it's a speedy gimmick.

Day-um. I can say I'm lucky enough never to have had something that bad placed on my shoulders. The worst that ever happened to me was losing my voice for a night because I was the only one among my friends that knew how to growl and we were doing a Halloween special where we needed someone to growl out the voice of Satan. I hadn't fully gotten used to the technique at the time, so my voice was pretty shot for the next 24 hours.

My band had a period like that but we got back together and practiced which resulted in some new songs.

My drummer has another band that he's devoting most of his time to now. They're better than our band (possibly because the guitarist is in music college, and the other members have years of experience) and he's not been interested in our band lately. Thing is, we have a gig next week and it looks like it might have to be an acoustic set :(

It's quite cruel of the BBC to advertise BBC 3 programs on 1 and 2. Is it not?

Also, anyone who's not heard Crap Game in New York, hear it.

Yeah, it sounds to me like you didn't know how to growl at the time, so you just winged it.

I knew the techniques behind it, but I had very little practice and was the only one who could pull it off for more than a second.

Still, it turned out pretty cool.

Probably, I was just pointing out that you knew of it, but you didn't know quite how to pull it off yet, I'm just being pompous.
