Why not get a 1 x 12 combo? That's not heavy at all.

It fell over onto the neck frets first, and the headstock is cracked horizontally quite badly at the back of the neck. It's already been repaired from that same injury once before so I believe she may have had it :(.

I was very sad, I bought myself a pretty sweet Fender to try and cheer myself up which has worked somewhat. I'll need a few more though.

Nothing is the same as my old baby though.

For portability have a small cab, that's what I'm after.

I've got an Aguilar AG500 that I've been running into an Epifani UL212 (4 Ohms) for years. I'm upgrading my cab set-up to include an Aguilar DB210 (8 Ohms) and a DB115 (8 Ohms) so for smaller gigs I can just take one and for bigger gigs bring both of them.

Yes but that is a modeller more than an amp. You still need a power amp I believe (correct me if I'm wrong) after that, where you could introduce the tube flavor.

After like 9 years of having active pre-amp basses I'm also really enjoying the tone out of my passive P. Warm and tasty.

Active basses really shine when direct DI-ing, there's always more low end. But passive basses need a really good preamp when recording direct I've found.

Is it a USA P bass or Mex?

Recording a bass straight to desk is pretty pov at the best of times, if you've got a sweet amp (and you should) you'll be right no matter what.

That's the next bass on my list, so me jealous. I don't know if I want to go straight up Precision pickups or a P/J config. Surely going P/J means I can do the straight P thing and the other electronics wouldn't sound audibly different to a striaght P bass right?

The P pickup in a P/J is actually moved farther forward toward the neck than on a straight P, so that's up to you to decide if it sounds the same.

Other than that, there's nothing inherently different about it. Bypassing any preamp that's on the bass would make it identical to either a P bass and bridge J pickup.

Active basses are almost always active preamps with passive pickups. Unless you are ordering a bass with EMGs or SGDs, they will be passive pickups. And any preamp can be bypassed - it's just a matter of soldering in a DPDT switch. :thumb:

Go for the Deluxe. Or if you want quality, go to somebody who specializes in making Fender clones:

If you're being really specific about tone then you may as well have a lot of instruments. This one is the bee's knees for old school P bass sound, look and feel I'd say but it's pretty versatile too thanks to the tone knob doing a lot more than I'm used to.

Mine is just a single P pick-up but I also want to pick up the Tony Franklin sigs that have a P/J set-up for a bit of different uses.

It still needs a power amp, but wasn't Joe asking about preamps anyway?

Still not sure whether that would be served better by cutting the power amp modelling out and using a valve poweramp, or keeping the poweramp modelling in, and using a solid state one with lots of headroom.

Well, I put a set of DA Pro Steels on my P-bass (tuned BEAD .145 - .105 - .080 - .060), and I'm rather underwhelmed with the B-string. It feels great, but it's lacking a lot of the low end. I'm going to try a set of Ken Smith steels (BEAD .145 - .106 - .080 - .058) and see if they are any better.

I've also decided that I'm worthless with a router and I'm just going to pay somebody to route the MM pickup cavity for me.

Wow, TI flats aren't cheap. How do you like them?

I'm not sure that they are what's on it because there was no packet included :p, but they're in the specs so they probably are.

They're pretty sweet strings, it was a bloody expensive bass so you'd want some snazzy strings included. What do they sell for separately?

The cheapest I've ever found them for in the US is $61 + s/h for a 4-string set, $89 + s/h for a 5-string set, and $102 + s/h for a 6-string set.

Good bass sets do get pricey around here, haven't bought strings in ages though so I'm not too sure what the current prices are.

Things have been good price wise here though, I got my P bass cheaper than the USA list price on the Fender site.

TI flats tend to cost about twice as much as most other strings around here, so speaking relatively, they are quite expensive. I pay less for my custom 8-string sets than I would for TI flats for my 6-strings.

Heavy. Normal sets around here go from about $40 to up to $100.

I feel that way about my Les Paul, even if you hate them (btw, why?), I take back my post about my Tele sounding better on clean tones. After some tweaking and using the neck pickup only, along with the built in analog delay (emulation) on my Bogner I got that classic clean bar chord strumming. The analog delay when set right does that chorusy thing too which is cool, if not a little cliche.

And getting chunky, overdriven rhythm parts is simple as fuck.

I don't really hate them, they're just not my favourite.
