Same for me. Just switch Episcopalians with Roman Catholic.
Sounds even more restrictive >.<

It's kind of odd to sit and watch my whole family pray around the dinner table, though. They respect my Atheism, but I can't help feeling like the odd man out.

Yes and no. My parents dont care if I listen to metal, as long as its not satanic. For example, when listening to Nile, they ask: "is this a satanic band victor?" I respond by saying "they are singing about Jesus mom."

I dont listen to much satanic metal anyway, so its not a problem.
The Rise of Satanic Metal? My mom will have a field day when I ask her if I could buy that...Jeebus. Maybe I can get my hands on a used copy from a bookstore.
Wow, thanks very much for turning me on to this book, everyone. I never even knew it existed.. I'm definitely getting it and it's death metal counterpart.

Shattered_Future 03-30-2006 08:45 PM

Excellent, excellent book. Really interesting quotations in it.

I classify my family as "unpracticing Christians". We celebrate major holidays (Christmas, Easter) and that's about it.

Sleepy 03-30-2006 08:47 PM

Eh, my family just asks if the music I'm listening to preaches white supremacy. They assume it's all demonic.

Toaster 03-30-2006 08:49 PM

My family's very strict about it. I have to hide many of my albums, lest I find myself having to attend church. *shudder*

My strategy to counter this:

Step 1) Get caught, either purposefully or by accident.

Step 2) Bring an mp3 player to Church.

Step 3) Blast Nordic Black Metal and show your mom how cool it is.

Step 4) There is no Step 4. She'll probably never let you within a half mile of a Church again.

Actually, she'd just take away his mp3 player and metal music. That's what would happen.

My family is non religous. Only time I've ever been in a church was for a funeral. That's it.

I'm fairly anti christ though. (not satanic).

My personal opinion on religous people is the following,

They are mentally ill. It's just a friend they made it to feel better. If someone did that without calling it "god", they'd land themselves a "5150".
They are deceiving themselves and helping deceiving others by being part of it all.
Religion brings out the worst in people,
example, All this "In the name of Muhammud" stuff over in the middle east, the radicals who blow up abortion clinics. We all know that bombing and wrecking havoc upon people is the way to set the moral high ground.

It's also just a form of mind control and another way for insecure men to control women stupid enough to following this crap.

I could go on for ages. I'll stop here. :thumb:

My parents used to make me go to church. They still try to, but I usually can't cause of work. Ugh, work..

You can always say your sick and don't want to throw up all over "the house of the lord". That should work.

If you really wanna get em going, quote anything I said from my opinion on religion as a whole up there.

blue3 03-31-2006 12:39 AM

That's your opinion, not mine. And I'm rarely sick so that's not believable. I never go there anymore anyway.

its the same case in my situation. i only have to go to church 2x a year.

i will call myself not satanic but anti-christian. last christmas i wished to get the "satanic bible" by anton lavey ... hm ... i think you can imagine what my parents said. we had a looooong discussion about what satanism is, am i satanist and what metal in general is... yeah, they even thought that metal is evil :smash: i had to explain them the whole way-of-life and philosophy of metal, though my dad listened to led zeppelin and black sabbath when he was young.

i listen to metal for years now and after such a long time, my parents realized that i listen to this kind of music and thats bad... or that thats the reason i am interested in satanism; but only cause i am interested in satanism doesn't mean that i AM satanistic. i only want to know more about it, than the general ppl outside the world.

they should accept me who i am! the best thing is that since they look at my angrily when i dress black (they don't want me to buy black clothes anymore), that i listen to agressive music and so on  they wanna change me: no metal, no black clothes, no anti-christians philosophy cause thats bad... muahaha... nietzsche, lavey... lol

i needed about 1-2months after i enlightened them what metal is... blabla. now they accept me the way i am, but still don't like it.... well they tolerate it, but don't accept it... yeah, thats the better way to describe it

the only good thing is that, i don't see my parents that often... i live in vienna, my parents don't. i visit them once a month... the next time i will see them on easter.

God is dead. nietzsche.
nietzsche is dead. God.

That's how it goes right?

Yeah. I'm anti religon overall. Read my post a page or two back if you didn't see it.

I see people who believe in "god" as mentally ill. Just creating a false person in their mind.

The Sandman 03-31-2006 03:57 AM

Got totally no idea what how this discussion started buuuut...I read all this stuff about Satanism a while ago and got kind of interested. I'm not a Satanist however. Also it's blown out to be way worse than it actually is, I think.

I don't think my parents object to me listening to metal too much. If they did I guess it'd also just make listening to aggressive stuff better. So yeah...:smash:

I never go to church by the way. Maybe I'll end up in hell. But apparently if you don't believe in x religion you'll go to hell anyway, so least I won't get lonely.

The Sandman 03-31-2006 03:59 AM

God is more or less an adults imaginary friend...

And no I can't find the edit button...

The Sandman 03-31-2006 04:08 AM

Precisely.

What's there to do in Heaven?

I mean...must get pretty chilly up there...and all those aeroplanes.

ahh interesting statement... I'm not the most religious person or anything, but i do go to church like 2x a month, i'm catholic btw... How come you came up with conclusion that "people who believe in God as mentally ill"??

I'll gladly explain.

In my theory, "God" is nothing more than an imaginery friend. A person or theme to throw as a blanket over a persons problems/issues/troubles.

Since we're going to consider that an imaginary friend. Lets talk about that.

If a "rational" person had belived in this higher power yet didn't call it "God" or hail towards a mainstream religion. This person would be on a 5150 faster than you can say, BAM!.
They would say the person has auditory and visual halucinations. Plus an imagary friend.

There is no difference between both situations.
Just dressing it up with this lovely word, "God".

It's just a way to control people by means of fear and another way for insecure males to control women.

The Sandman 03-31-2006 04:20 AM

Very well said.
Very well said.
Thank you.

I'd like to add.

Religion is used in many ways to justify evil.

Look at the middle east. All the terrorism, bombings, killing and such are done "in the name of...".
Look at the abortion clinic bombings, which are done "in the name of morals...".
I'm personally anti abortion, however....

Terror and violence is no way to set a "Moral Highground".

For anyone who doesn't know what a "5150" is,

It's an "involuntary hold" for 72 hours at a mental hospital. If your deemed sane, they release within that 72 hours. If your insane, a danger to yourself or others or just really damn loony. They keep you.

Concubine 03-31-2006 04:25 AM

wow, i don't know how to responds to that... It seems to me that your mind is already set about this... I'm not going to judge you or anything.. I am asian, and from where i came from, religion is quite important.. However, i do understand that people has different perspectives about this.. It's just never occured to me that someone has such a negative view about God.. But anyway, it's just a matter of different beliefs, i guess... Let's just leave it that way, shall we???:chug:

Ugh yeah, i guess Moeslims(sp?) is a little bit extreme about their stuff.. It's not the religion's fault or anything.. You have to understand that many factors, such as money, etc come into play.. So, it's the people, not the religion.. I could understand how you came up with such opinion, though...
