Well, I've decided that I'm getting a Tabla Starter set for my birthday (which is soon, September 5, so mark your calenders). Also, a 2-book set on the basics of tabla.

When I get to know this instrument, I'll try and lay down some tabla tracks for Pu**** and Reflection, which I plan to do with only and acoustic guitar and a tabla drum, and my voice.

Should be fun! :thumb:

BlindWriting 08-07-2005 07:01 PM

Nice. Tabla are so awesome. I've been interested in getting a set but I'm saving up for a China cymbal.

Syncratic 08-07-2005 07:08 PM

The thing is, I have no background in percussion, so this will be an all new experience for me.
ROBTTH was pants, i enjoyed the singles apart from god put a smile upon your face, and I also enjoyed green eyes, other than that it's pretty poor. X & Y has 1 good song, talk. That is all.
I like till kingdom come, speed of sound and square one of x&y, the rest is pretty much crap

I know there's The Mars Volta fans in here, so I thought I'd ask here:

I thought I'd delve into TMV so I got the album Frances The Mute. I downloaded from a Torrent and the files I got and the tracklisting are confusing me.

My tracks are labeled like this:

01-the_mars_volta-cygnus____vismund_cygnus-jrp
02-the_mars_volta-the_widow-jrp
03-the_mars_volta-lvia_lviaquez-jrp
04-the_mars_volta-miranda_that_ghost_just_isnt_holy_anymore-jrp
05-the_mars_volta-cassandra_geminni-jrp
06-the_mars_volta-tarantism-jrp
07-the_mars_volta-plant_a_nail_in_the_navel_stream-jrp
08-the_mars_volta-famine_pulse-jrp
09-the_mars_volta-pisacis_(phra-men-ma)-jrp
10-the_mars_volta-con_safo-jrp
11-the_mars_volta-multiple_spouse_wounds-jrp
12-the_mars_volta-sarchophagi-jrp

When I look at the tracklisting it's something different and odd. Can someone help me out?

1. Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus: Sarcophagi
2. Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus: Umbilical Syllables
3. Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus: Facilis Descenus Averni
4. Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus: Con Safo
5. Widow
6. Via l'Viaquez
7. Miranda That Ghost Just Isn't Holy Anymore: Vade Mecum
8. Miranda That Ghost Just Isn't Holy Anymore: Pour Another Icepick
9. Miranda That Ghost Just Isn't Holy Anymore: Pisacis (Phra-Men-Ma)
10. Miranda That Ghost Just Isn't Holy Anymore: Con Safo
11. Cassandra Geminni: Tarantism
12. Cassandra Geminni: Plant a Nail in the Navel Stream
13. Cassandra Geminni: Faminepulse
14. Cassandra Geminni: Multiple Spouse Wounds
15. Cassandra Geminni: Sarcophagi

That's what I get almost everywhere else.

The Flabbit Rides High 08-08-2005 02:00 AM

I know its really confusing, but tis worth it. That album rocks.

I also don't know the indiwidual names for the parts in cassandra geminni, but the fun part is, you can make it up! Its provided for you! :P

Syncratic 08-08-2005 07:13 AM

I figured out the tracklisting.....track 5 is the beginning of Cassandra Geminni...here's how I have it set up:

1. Cyngus.....Vismund Cyngus
2. The Widow
3. L'Via L'Viaquez
4. Miranda That Ghost Just Isn't Holy Anymore
5. Cassandra Geminni: Tarantism
6. Cassandra Geminni: Tarantism Part 2
7. Cassandra Geminni: Plant A Nail in the Navel Stream
8 Cassandra Geminni: PANITNS Part 2
9. Cassandra Geminni: Faminepulse
10.Cassandra Geminni: Faminepuls Part 2
11.Cassandra Geminni: Multiple Spouse Wounds
12.Cassandra Geminni: Sarcophagi

I used to list it differently, and then, wilst looking at the lyrics, realized that CG started on track 5.

Back to the topic of Radiohead and Coldplay and such. Chris Martin is good at writing catchy little pop songs, and thats it. He can write some catchy piano lines, and his voice has good range to sing melodies, even though he overuses a lot of melodic lines, IMO. Also, his lyrics are often extremely cliché and you can guess what the next word is gonna be in most songs. The rest of the band seem pretty bog standard, even the bassist, what lines are that good? Haha. (Having said this, I enjoy a good handful of their songs anyway)

Radiohead, well, personally I love The Bends, OK Computer and Kid A, and I like select songs from the other albums. I loved The Bends after my first listen, OK Computer took quite a few listens to "get" due to the arty nature, but now I enjoy every song on it. And Kid A took me relaxing with my girlfriend listening to it in bed to appreciate it more, for some reason. It's not what i'm used to, but it's a brilliant album too.

TMV? I've said it once and i'll say it again, FTM isn't THAT good an album. I've heard much better prog in King Crimson or even Tool's prog moments to name a couple. Deloused is much better. I mean, come on, listening to FTM, surely you get bored waiting for the good moments in the songs after a few listens to the album. The boring bits get more boring, and the wait for the good bits becomes increasingly pointless, in my experience. They're capable of better, I think. I found it completely unfocused, but to each their own.
Like I said, I just think he was litterally extremely pissed off recording that song.. It seems so sincere..
As far as I know, it's aimed at the recording industry
I always thought of it as the media in general.

Think about it like this;

1. Cygnus... Vismund Cygnus
2. The Widow
3. L'Via L'Viaquez
4. Miranda That Ghost Just Isn't Holy Anymore
5. Cassandra Gemini 1
6. Cassandra Gemini 2
7. Cassandra Gemini 3
8. Cassandra Gemini 4
9. Cassandra Gemini 5
10. Cassandra Gemini 6
11. Cassandra Gemini 7
12. Cassandra Gemini 8

Frances The Mute really shows how TMV is an album band. You're honestly better off saving yourself a ton of confusion and just buying the album. I've said it before, and I'll say it again, they're an amazing band, and FtM is one of my favorite CDs of all time.

These are the ACTUAL names of all the individual movements in each song. The only song on the album where the individual movements become tracks is Cassandra Gemini. (Except someone screwed it up and made it into eight tracks instead of five.)

I actually like FTM a little better than DitC, simply because I heard it first, though I really like De-Loused.

Maynard James Keenan, you'll make my heart stop, man. I thought it was the real MJK in here. Da.mn man, dont do that to me.... :upset:  : :amaze:

paganman7 08-08-2005 12:33 PM

I like TMV, but I was a bit dissapointed with Frances the Mute. Deloused was such a fantastic album, so I suspect that my expectations were a bit high for Frances. That said, Frances is a good album, but Deloused is just extraordinary. Also, they catch some criticism of their live act, but I've got to say, I enjoy their live show; it's full of energy and very interactive. It's not my favorite live act, but it's nowhere near as horrid as some people would have you believe.

TerryThorne 08-08-2005 12:49 PM

Wait, why are we talking about TMV here?

Because there is very little Tool news to discuss.

This is more than a Tool thread, its a tool fan community

That's pretty cool. I've got a small set up in my room as well. Not recording, but to go along with my digital drumset, there's a guitar preamp, a headphone mixer, and a bass plug-in, so my band and I can play completely through headphones. This equipment is old stuff of my dad's back when he ran a private recording studio.

I'd love to be able to work in some recording so we could save the jams right into my computer.

Adam Jones is GOD 08-08-2005 01:51 PM

Your parents must love you. Band jams with no noise.

I've dug out my old mic I was depending on for this recording, and man does it smell of cheapness. I might have to go out and buy another less cheaper one

Kage 08-08-2005 02:03 PM

The singer in my band's sister moved out of his house recently, and we completely emptied her room and converted it into a nice recording studio. His parents live in China now, so we jam there all the time.

Moses 08-08-2005 02:04 PM

I just need recording equipment and I'm set........

Yeah, that's kinda just saying that I don't have ****.

kurrpt 08-08-2005 02:05 PM

SOOooooo whens the new album coming out?

any word as of yet?

Adam Jones is GOD 08-08-2005 02:06 PM

I've got the next 2 weeks with the house to myself, so noise is no longer an issue (we have Trance/Drum&Bass lovers one side, and boy racers the other, some Napalm Death will set thing straight :D ), so im hoping a few friends will be up for actually learning an instrument.

Its sad being the only music playing man in my circle of friends :(
