So, I'm finally listening to Incubus' If Not Now, When?

I expected a bit more from it than what I'm hearing so far. Musically, it's just lacking. There's a sweet little jam breakdown in "In The Company of Wolves", and I quite like the trance created by the simple music in "If Not Now, When?" (even if it is a bit U2-esque). Other than that, the single "Adolescents" was kind of misleading of the overall sound of the album.

BenJammin 09-30-2011 07:46 AM

Incubus haven't been truly good since Morning View. A handful of good songs since, but nothing to write home about over the last 10 years, almost.

It's true. I think there's a clear trend in their music that, as a whole, it was going to get softer and more focused on Brandon's vocals. As much as I like Ben Kenney, I really think parting ways with Dirk Lance hurt the heavier, more creative drive that the band had musically.

fatbandit 09-30-2011 10:58 AM

Saying that, I LOVE what Ben does with their old stuff when they play it. Just a Phase on the Red Rocks DVD is well cool. I do like A Crow Left of the Murder a lot though, it was a grower. Not even given the new album a chance after hearing the lead single :/ Same with new Chili Peppers stuff. The music of my youth is failing me! Don't even get me started on the Metallica/Lou Reed thing ahahaha.

Check out the first track:

It's the only one that really stuck out to me.

gaslight 10-01-2011 04:36 AM

Haven't heard the new Incubus.

Got the new Chili's, solid pop album but nothing inspiring. A couple of sweet tracks so I'm content enough.

Fun riff in the song on there in 7, haven't heard them do a song in 7 before.
Canada is pretty good. Go to one coast or the other, though. Stay away from central Canada unless you like rednecks, assholes, and politicians.
Stay away from Northern BC too. Also there're plenty of assholes in Southern BC too, really.

Convectuoso 10-11-2011 03:16 PM

Traded $1kNZD and a Gap PRE73 for a 5 String Corvette $$ in Nirvana Black. Bass is worth about $3k brand new. Think I got a pretty sweet deal. Needs a setup but neck is very straight consider I know it hasn't been serviced. Can't wait till I slap some new strings on!

FunkMetalBass 10-11-2011 11:02 PM

Throw some Warwick Black Labels on. Warwick basses really shine with steels.

Convectuoso 10-12-2011 01:27 PM

You reckon? I was told that the $$ pickups were quite bright as they are, do you think that'd be too bright with the steels?

FunkMetalBass 10-12-2011 02:18 PM

The humbuckers are wired in parallel, which slightly scoops the mids. Also where they are placed, they are going to tend to accent the low mids. Steel strings tend to have more upper mid presence, which should balance the tone a bit.

fatbandit 10-12-2011 04:08 PM

i hate nickels

FunkMetalBass 10-12-2011 04:27 PM
i hate nickels
I hate pure nickel strings. However, I really like nickel-steel strings on most of my basses, although I have a set of D'Addario Pro Steels that I'm going to try out on my Schecter sometime this week.

Convectuoso 10-13-2011 02:25 AM

Yeah the Pro Steels look pretty sweet.

I tell you what you are right. At first I had no 9v for the active electronics and was like meh, I know the strings are old but this sound pathetic. **pops a 9v in, cranks it up** and all of sudden fat bass tones. Lows/low mids for Africa. Now I can't wait to get it setup and restringed.

Convectuoso 10-13-2011 02:25 AM

Lol look at us talk about bass stuff in the bass forum. How sweet.

FunkMetalBass 10-13-2011 11:33 PM

Is the volume an active/passive push-pull?

BenJammin 10-14-2011 12:44 PM

6 days till we're in the same time zone, Joe.

FunkMetalBass 10-14-2011 01:12 PM

Dude, you're gonna love this time zone! It's awesome. Loads of chicks here.

However, Arizona is one of 4 states that doesn't partake in Daylight Savings Time, so for about half of the year, we'll be an hour apart, and sadness will ensue.

fatbandit 10-14-2011 06:04 PM

y'all know GMT is the place to be anyways.

FunkMetalBass 10-15-2011 01:23 AM
y'all know GMT is the place to be anyways.
Psh, General Mountain Time, maybe. GMT - 7:00 represent!

Convectuoso 10-16-2011 02:56 AM

Hey Auzzies.

We're dominating.

How do you feel?

In other news, I have become assessed with electric guitar pedals. I bought a Hot cake. Best thing I ever did. Now I want an analog delay, EHX memory toy looks cool for the price, cheaper than the Carbon Copy, and seems to do the same thing essentially.

Then reverb maybe the Nano Holy Grail. But not sure on that one.

Convectuoso 10-16-2011 03:50 AM

Again.

We dominated.

fatbandit 10-16-2011 04:20 AM

Try out the Verbzilla man, the reverbs are surprisingly nice in it!

Going to see letlive tonight, and it's my birthday - can't wait ^_^

random questions, but do most az'ers call california "cali"? And why does everyone still wear cargo shorts there? Why do malls in PHX have surf shops (at least the one I went to did)? why does payson have more gun stores than gas stations/restaurants/grocery stores? Have you ever gone hunting for those javalina (sp?) things? They look tasty.

edit: Wait, I think I might have answered my second to last question with last one...

FunkMetalBass 10-19-2011 10:33 AM
random questions, but do most az'ers call california "cali"
Some do, some don't. I find that most teens and 20-somethings call it "Cali". I do on occasion.
And why does everyone still wear cargo shorts there?
I haven't noticed. Most of us guys tend to wear shorts for the majority of the year, and jean shorts have been out of style since the 70's. I think the fashion stems a bit from California, because many Californians migrate to Arizona for cheaper residence and lower taxes.
Why do malls in PHX have surf shops (at least the one I went to did)?
I wasn't aware that we had surf shops specifically. We have big chain stores that originated in California (like Pac Sun and Hollister) and they tend to decorate with surf boards and such. I can't say I've ever actually seen a surf shop in this state. Which mall were you at?
why does payson have more gun stores than gas stations/restaurants/grocery stores?
For one, gun laws are incredibly lax here. Also, in the more forested areas of Arizona, you find significantly more rednecks and "outdoorsy" people who hunt a lot.
Have you ever gone hunting for those javalina (sp?) things? They look tasty.
I don't hunt, and I've never had javelina, but I've heard that it tastes "gamey" at best, and pretty bad most other times. Supposedly it's like pork and tastes decent when made into bratwursts (50% javelina, 50% pork) or with green chile for burritos, but it smells terrible and is somewhat dangerous to handle when harvesting the meat.

Cow brain tacos, though...those are amazing.

Were you just in Arizona recently without telling me?

Jaded 10-19-2011 10:22 PM

Granny's 80th was in june or something, so yeah, I was there (in payson) briefly. Usually I visit once or twice a year, a lot of my family lives there. My mothers family is in PHX/scottsdale, and granny lives up in the high desert. Until recently my fathers parents lived in sedona, so I've spent a lot of time in AZ over the years. Don't remember the mall, could of sworn it was a surfshop, but it prob was a pac sun like you said. Thought maybe PHX was riddled with waterparks with those big fake wave things like they had on king of the hill or something.

cow brains?!?!? You want to get mad cow? I'm a big fan of lengua tho.

I still want to know what aussies are dominating. Water conservation? Just about every animal in that godforsaken place can kill you with a glance, but the people are kinda goofy and they play football wrong.

The place at which I work sells wild boar sausage, among other amazing things, so I was thinking maybe the mini wild boars are good too.

FunkMetalBass 10-20-2011 07:05 AM

Damnit, next time you're planning a trip to AZ, hit me up - we'll go hit up some of the local breweries.

Jaded 10-20-2011 02:11 PM

fo sho

FunkMetalBass 10-21-2011 09:05 AM

I brewed up 10 gallons of beer last weekend. Now I only have 2 weeks to find, de-label, and clean another 50+ beer bottles. Sh*t. I didn't plan this very well.
