There are 2 Koreas. In case you forgot. :p
|
Yes but only one of them is a good source of amusement.

On a related note, here is a 3-part video of two American journalists who pose as tourists and sneak into North Korea. Fascinating watch if you can set aside the time (about an hour total). If it makes it easier to learn riffs he's playing in drop tuned positions, then stick with drop B. Otherwise, just do whatever you're most comfortable with, cuz it doesn't really matter :p
My hand has grown massive thanks to a wasp. NOoooooooooooo. Got some time off work for it though, sweet. |
If possible my option would be to just play a 5 string which will be BEADG.
Tuning B F# B E isn't a pleasant thing for the neck of a bass in the long term. BEAD is probably preferable though, at least it keeps the fourth intervals in tact so the tension should be proportionate. It's hard to find a 4 string that will tune down that far without losing a lot of string tension. Probably want to wait for FMB on this, he's into all that stuff. |
It's not so much the fact it's a 4 string, it's more to do with what gauge the strings are. Longer scale would probably help a bit too. Personally I'd go B standard still though.

The guitarist in my band tunes in drop B so I have been following his lead and tuning to B F# B E. Is this advisable or should I tune to B E A D? Thanks.
To answer the question, either tuning is fine, it just depends on what you prefer. Neither is really going to cause any havoc on your bass neck - it's rather resilient. I'd recommend that you look into buying single strings and making your own string sets. Traditional string sets are quite poorly designed in terms of string tension, and playing around with dropped tunings only makes them less ideal (under-tensioned strings sound dull and clickity-clackity). I see you're in England, so I don't know what options you have. D'Addario seem to be found worldwide, so maybe you can find a place that sells singles and try a set like this: (BEAD) If you like a .100 E-string .135 - .100 - .075 - .055 (BEAD) If you like a .105 E-string .145 - .105 - .080 - .060 (BF#BE) If you like a .100 E-string .135 - .090 - .065 - .050 (BF#BE) If you like a .105 E-string .145 - .095 - .070 - .055 Each of those will provide balanced tension for more consistent tone and feel. If you end up liking balanced tension, seriously check out this string company: http://www.circlekstrings.com. I've fallen in love with them - their strings last for longer than usual and they are incredibly flexible - I use a .150 for all of my low B's and even their .200 for my low F#. They make strings all the damned way down to a .254 too. |
In England, Newtone are the people for custom string sets. But it's expensive (it will be no matter where you go for specialist stuff).
Other than that, possibly Status - I think they do custom sets. Beyond that, you're down to stock stuff or US imports I think. |
If you don't mind ordering online, check this guy out:
http://www.bassstringsonline.com/Build-your-own-set_c_163.html It's not only super convenient, but the guy ships fast, has great customer service skills, and if you're a Talkbass member, he'll get you discounted pricing. I've ordered from him a few times. According to his TB thread, international shipping is pretty quick. |
None of you play bass anymore, gtfo.
Go out and ride some bikes, fatties. Edit: Holy shit, has it really already been 8 years since I started posting on this forum? Oh how times flies. |
8, actually.
8, actually.
I can math. I will stab you. How have you been, man? |
Eh, same old. Well, not really, actually.
Moving to Vancouver in 5 weeks, lol. Other side of the motherfucking country. |
Why are you moving out there? You can go party it up in Seattle now.
|
Change of scenery. Doing fuck-all out here, and I was out to visit some friends earlier in the summer, and decided to move.
Ta-da. |
I've been to Vancouver. Nice place.
Shit, man. We might be making a snowboard trip to Whistler come January. so I might have to stay an extra day and make the 2 hour trek over to Vancouver and see ya. |
By all means, you're welcome whenever. Just give me a heads up so I book off work if needed and pump up the air mattress :p

I like this plan. I'll bring my theremin.
I like Vancouver. I remember them wanting 25 cents for shopping carts, though. I was like the fuck?
I think it's just a deposit so that you don't run off with it like a hobo. |
Yeah, I think that's part of it.
lol
Yeah, it's a nice city. Well. Parts of it.
There is a large population of Cantonese-speaking people there. Watch out! |

Watch out!
True. On the other hand: Delicious food. |
Do you have a job lined up there?
Nope. Have 2-3 months worth of rent/expenses saved up, gonna take the time to find something I like. |
Just found out yesterday that there's no way I can achieve a physics degree on top of my math degree by Spring of 2013 because of the scheduled course offerings. Kinda bummed, to be honest. :(

Yeah Canada seems really nice.
If I had to leave Australia I think I'd fit in most comfortably in either Canada or New Zealand. I think places like Greenland and Sweden are really beautiful too but I'd never survive without being surrounded by English speakers. |
my sole experience of canada is reading and watching scott pilgrim.
|
Canada is pretty good. Go to one coast or the other, though. Stay away from central Canada unless you like rednecks, assholes, and politicians.
|
The only cities I know of are Toronto, Vancouver, and Quebec I think.
