the beatles are your favorite band

dei 02-29-2008 09:25 AM

Niobium, where have you been all my life?

samariah 02-29-2008 10:56 AM

I'm reading Thus Spoke Zaruthustra by Nietzsche, Zen and The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, The Idiot by Dostoyevsky, Fear and Trembling by Soren Kierkegaard, On The Road and Lolita. I have a problem with trying to read too many books at one time.

Eliminator 02-29-2008 10:58 AM

aawesomesky

Zmev 02-29-2008 11:03 AM

Well yeah thats 6 books you have two eyes (assuming), do the math.

Liebensaft 02-29-2008 01:52 PM
I just read 2/3 of Camus' The Fall today in one sitting. You should too.
I haven't heard much praise of Camus' work besides The Stranger. I need to re-read that too. I was too young too appreciate it, I think.

On the Road is one of my favorites.

Bukowski 02-29-2008 02:25 PM

On the Road is awesome.

The only Nietzsche I've read is Beyond Good & Evil. What I understood was alright I guess.

Liebensaft 02-29-2008 02:28 PM

What the hell. Best Buy is so lame. I've owned like 5 pairs of the same Sony headphones (mdrex51LP is the model number, I just looked it up), and my cat always chews them up or something. They're pretty much the best you can get in the sub-$30 price range. Anyway, I need a new pair, and every place I've been has them for 20 bucks. I have a $25 gift card for Best Buy, so I figure I'll hit up their website and take care uh bizness, turns out they're selling them for $45. Wal-Mart has them at literally half that price. Best Buy marks their products up to a level that's almost absurd.

Anxious 02-29-2008 02:33 PM

Nietzsche had a bunch of clever ideas but never put them together into a whole. Basically, its just a bunch of smartass sounding crap with no point. Even experts on philosophy will tell you this.

Camus on the other hand, was brilliant.

Eliminator 02-29-2008 02:40 PM

Camus sounds like Comus, so that's good.

Yeah I kind of agree. He wasn't entirely sane but I've found some of his ideas to be pretty fresh. Ive only read a Camus excerpt so I can't say much on him. I'm looking forward to reading Heidegger for an Existentialism class I'm taking. I want to try and read Being and Time but I should start with his more accessible stuff because that book is insanely technical. We're covering Kierkegaard right now and even though he comes from a religious perspective, its really good applicable coherent stuff.

Eliminator 02-29-2008 03:49 PM

an existentialism class?

lol

samariah 02-29-2008 03:58 PM

why is that funny?

Liebensaft 02-29-2008 04:05 PM

First day, after the professor walks in: "Well, in the grand scheme of things, this class will be utterly useless. You may take interest in and pass around the information I could teach you, but what good will it do when you're all underground or dispersed as ashes? You guys can feel free to talk amongst yourselves, I'm gonna put on 'Mr. Deeds.'"

pixiesfanyo 02-29-2008 04:10 PM

this thread got really gay when you guys decided to talk about philosophy.

shut up,

Eliminator 02-29-2008 04:12 PM
