Do you guys know anything about stoner metal tone? Like what kind of distortion and settings the Melvins use, for example.

Kage 11-17-2006 02:50 PM

The key to stoner metal mayhem:

Low: 10
High: 0
Mid: 0

x 100000

magicbus 11-17-2006 03:01 PM

 Yea I figured something like that, but I'm talking like the kind of distortion they use.

Melvins distortion really just sounds like Grunge/Punk-ish distortion with complete low end rape.

Phototropic 11-20-2006 08:48 AM

Gain: full
Volume: half
deep / bass : 3/4
treble / mid: half

K thanks dudes.

So Esoteric is sweet, Pelican and Isis are sweet, and I'm digging Om too (who I'm sending out for the Daily Upload). That's what I figured out this weekend.

the2stranger 11-20-2006 10:53 AM

Was it the Esoteric I uploaded?
If so, it's a great album, all their stuff is good, but the production on their latest is so good.

Kyle 11-20-2006 11:40 AM

Charged by Nebula is great, one of my favorites by them. The track This One is amazing.

Kage 11-20-2006 11:46 AM
Esoteric
I didn't actually get it from the DU, but my friend sent me Subconcious Dissolution and Metamorphogenesis. Both very cool albums.

Kage: I'm gonna upload Om's other album in the next few days too. I think they're both pretty good.

AlienEater 11-20-2006 06:03 PM

Yeah they're cool

Nostalgia 11-23-2006 03:30 AM

I just got Ahab's The Call Of The Wretched Sea and am giving it a listen now. So far it's excellent, but I still need to download the other half of it for some reason. :(

NP: Ahab - The Pacific

I downloaded some Kyuss other day. I d/l Green Machine, Freedom Run and Mondo Generator, and so far I've liked what I heard. Any recommendations on albums would be much appreciated.

pate 11-26-2006 03:29 PM

Blues for the Red Sun and Welcome to Sky Valley.

randomthought9 11-26-2006 04:01 PM

I just got into Sunn O))), I like them. I don't know too much about doom metal though, what are the biggest bands?

Sleepy 11-26-2006 04:57 PM
Blues for the Red Sun and Welcome to Sky Valley.
Seconded. Two classic stoner albums.

2muchket! 11-26-2006 05:44 PM

I was thinking about getting BFTRS but thanks anyway I'll pick up Welcome To Sky Valley too.

Get some Electric Wizard

Phototropic 11-26-2006 08:47 PM

Dopethrone by the 'lec wiz is one of the best albums ever

it probably is the heaviest album recorded, i can't think of something that tops it

so much hate :)

Tyler 11-26-2006 08:52 PM

Man, Sunn 0))) ****ing sucks. I heard a few of their tracks and it sounded like a big wet ****ing fart, it wasn't interesting in the least.

niobium 11-26-2006 09:09 PM

I bought Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley at a used place. It has this on the front in gold lettering:

FOR PROMOTIONAL USE ONLY.
SALE OR OTHER TRANSFER IS
PROHIBITED. MUST BE RETURNED ON
DEMAND OF RECORDING COMPANY.

Tyler 11-26-2006 09:12 PM

You basically bought a promo copy someone got for free. Is there a hole punched in the spine of it?

niobium 11-26-2006 09:14 PM

Nope.

:D

Tyler 11-26-2006 09:14 PM

Ah. Well then that's odd.

Phototropic 11-26-2006 09:21 PM

sounds rare

sounds like a keeper!!

NP: Mogwai - Auto-rock :)

Patrick O))) 11-26-2006 09:50 PM

lol Jon, IT'S A KEEPER ANYWAY!

niobium 11-26-2006 10:02 PM

I found Blues for the Red Sun a week later at the same store. I also saw Wretch that day, but I didn't buy it because I never heard it before. I haven't seen it since then :/

Patrick O))) 11-26-2006 10:14 PM

Wretch is good, but it's true what they say; the production IS pretty sub-par

Still full of tunes any stoner band would kill for.

Blues... is one of my favourite albums, and pretty much constantly vies for title of Best Kyuss album imo against Sky Valley.

...And The Circus Leaves Town was the first Kyuss album I ever got, so that's another favourite. It was one of those times that you're talking to someone when you put an album on, and you have to tell them to go away ...

 haha, tellin them to go away

Kyuss = the best

every album is great, although recently i've been playing sky valley a lot more than the others

Even though alot of people don't like Wretch i think its fookin bangin :chug:

AlienEater 11-28-2006 12:01 PM

Wretch is OK.

Patrick O))) 11-28-2006 08:14 PM

Wretch is pretty good. But it's let down by the production something awful

Sunn O))) is't doom though, it's closely related.
Sunn O))) is drone, if you're looking for doom metal try:
Candlemass, Solitude Aeturnus, Katatonia, My Dying Bride.

All sorts of slow music rule tough.
Stoner, drone, doom, funeral, doom/death/sludge.
:D
