In 8th grade I was all about Drive-Thru Records, which led to Thursday, which led to Poison The Well, then metalcore, then hardcore.

I'm in 10th, also skipped, so the age of a 9th grader.
That's like my life story, even the part about skipping a grade and being in 10th grade.

I still find that song to be really corny. It has a really good sound though.

NewKindofArmy03 09-16-2004 01:23 PM

i used to always get straight A's because im smart like that but i never had the chance to skip. and now i'm in a magnet school so i can't skip because everybody is smart.

A-Life-Less-Plagued 09-16-2004 01:26 PM

I skipped grade 3 because I moved to the UK. Something to do with the age being different or whatever. But I was really smart in grade 2, and probably would have skipped anyway.

Wtf is up with kids skipping grades?

syrUsbilt 09-16-2004 03:50 PM

Eben (looozer on here) skipped 3 grades. He is a little older than me and a senior in COLLEGE. Crazy.

40 oz 2 freedom 09-16-2004 04:05 PM

I skipped first grade, so I don't know if that counts.

cbmartinez 09-16-2004 06:50 PM

I skipped kindergarten. :) I'm 14 and in 10th grade. I turn 15 next month.

AndHagan3 09-16-2004 06:53 PM

WTF, thats crazy. I skipped Kindergarden too and I'm 15 and in the 10th grade.

shane italian 09-16-2004 06:54 PM

I skipped no grades and I'm 15 in the 10th grade...I'm supposed to be in 11th grade in California too.

BuddyBigsby 09-16-2004 06:54 PM

Well, I'm off to Martyr AD. I'll sing along to Haste the Day for you, shane.

California kids go to school earlier than the country folk in Indiana.

BuddyBigsby 09-16-2004 06:56 PM

3?! ...how many AndHagans do we need on this Earth?

AndHagan3 09-16-2004 06:57 PM

Don't worry their is only one.

an0therface 09-16-2004 10:27 PM

what would set 'melodic hardcore' apart from 'hardcore', 'post-hardcore' etc? and could you use some examples of bands, please

Gotkookie 09-16-2004 10:47 PM
Grind is just as much punk influenced as it is Metal.
agreed

Gotkookie 09-16-2004 10:50 PM
I thought Hatebreed was the definition of Metalcore? But then I dont listen to much in that genre.
i always thought metalcore wasnt really as much hardcore influenced, metalcores a lot more technical i.e : norma jean, through the eyes of the dead, etc...

NewKindofArmy03 09-16-2004 10:52 PM

metalcore is as much hardcore as it is metalcore, it depends on the band. and metalcore doesn't need to be technical.

Gotkookie 09-16-2004 10:54 PM

usually it is with all those annoying chuggas...

BuddyBigsby 09-17-2004 12:58 AM

That's because there's two factions of metalcore.

Real metalcore (Hatebreed, 100 Demons, Martyr AD)
and then everything else that gets called metalcore that really has very little relation to hardcore, besides the scene and the fanbase.

Converge gets called metalcore, I dont understand how or why...

BuddyBigsby 09-17-2004 01:40 AM

Exactly. They're in that second faction. It's become a sort of alternative genre for bands that aren't actually hardcore at all, but not quite metal either.

frontsideflip4u 09-17-2004 02:26 AM

who gives a **** its music and its not rap...thats what it is

theres two types of music...amazing and ****...why does everyone wanna argue about core being in front of something behind something being the root of this word or the root of that word...wtf...bull****

BuddyBigsby 09-17-2004 03:28 AM

Hey. Shut up.
no matter how much you bitch about people trying to fit genres and categorise music it will still happen, get over it. plus it is interesting topic and it helps people like me find out what bands fit where and to learn what bands they wish to listen to and go see etc.

the end

Atreyu346 09-17-2004 12:36 PM

Yea putting music into genres is annoying but it still happens so we have to accept it.

A-Life-Less-Plagued 09-17-2004 01:14 PM

Putting music into genres doesn't annoy me in the least.

BuddyBigsby 09-17-2004 01:33 PM

95% of the people who whine about genres:

1. Newjacks / Just got into "screamo"
2. Listen to a handful of bands
or both.

NewKindofArmy03 09-17-2004 01:40 PM

genres aren't hard to learn at all though. i don't listen to much metal at all, and i can even tell what genre most metal bands are.

cbmartinez 09-17-2004 01:49 PM

I agree with the metalcore thing. I think the two groups are located on either side of the metalcore scale. Group A (100 Demons, Walls Of Jericho) are on the side with more of a hardcore influence. Group B (Atreyu, Bleeding Through) is leaning towards metal.

cbmartinez 09-17-2004 03:03 PM

I wanna' settle something.

Death By Stereo, hardcore or metalcore?

BuddyBigsby 09-17-2004 03:05 PM

Man, they're too all over the place. Like they have punk/hardcore one minute, and then metalcore the next. It's not really mixed, it's just like a sudden change in the music. Old stuff was more metalcore though, I guess.

NewKindofArmy03 09-17-2004 03:06 PM

hardcore and metalcore. one minute they're just straight-up hardcore and then the next they're leaning more towards metal. they're a band that's hard to classify, and so you can't really call them one or the other.

cbmartinez 09-17-2004 03:07 PM

Yeah, it is a tough one. But Throwdown is heavier than DBS and they get called hardcore, so I guess I'll go with hardcore.
