Any good ska instrumentals out there that can be thrown in my direction? Im trying to make a playlist/mix of them and I only got 8-9 for a total of 20minutes.
I'm pretty sure the tokyo ska paradise orchestra do a few. The Skatalites have a few. Chris Murray has a few. The Suburban Legends has zanzibar and the new Big D and the Kids Table album has one with minimal voices.

I don't really like isntrumentals, so I can't help you too much.

Skatalites - Guns of Navarone

The king of all instrument ska songs.

Not exactly ska but NOFX - Flogging A Dead Horse. I'm not usually this helpful but I was listening to it today.

the-UK-ska-scene 04-23-2006 05:59 PM

Hah, ska gossip. Laila (Sonic Boom Six, BabyBoom) is going out with Nick (Skylar, Thinkpol, ex-Howards Alias). Teehee. Let's start a Punk Rock Confidential about ska.

Catchthe22 04-23-2006 06:40 PM

OMG thats hawt

Catchthe22 04-26-2006 04:58 PM

Playing with local punk bands. One is Fried Chinese Donalds and they are okay. And then there is Riot 49 and most people I talk to dont like them, but should be good no matter what. They were awesome when I saw them 2.5 years ago and that is when i barely knew them.

666Ozzfan 04-28-2006 10:08 PM

What of New Zealand Ska Bands?? I know of two: The Bones, based in Dunedin and Stitchface, based in Palmerston North. Stitchface has myspace also: www.myspace.com/stitchface

Kithkin 05-03-2006 02:41 AM

Anybody heard of Filibuster? They're a band that were on Skunk Records (sublime). They had at least two albums and I have no idea if they are still together, though I assume not. They have no website and a fan myspace and skunk doesn't have any mention of them on their website.

In any case, they make music that is like a quicker jump with joey. Really competent musicians playing uptempo ska. A group of great singers who like gang vocals. The band sounds like they would be crazy fun to see. The tempo is just perfect for real skanking. Think the toasters d.l.t.b.g.y.d. only the horns are more of the background music, not the primary melody.

Hard to describe, so listen:

They were on some x-box surfing/snowboarding/skating game I think. My guitarist for that ska band that never went anywhere talked about them. I finally tracked down a cd and it is a fine piece of work.

Catchthe22 05-03-2006 02:47 PM

Yeah i first heard them on Amped the snowboarding game for xbox. They were the best.

Or Harry J Allstars - Liquidator or Prince Buster - Al Capone.

the-UK-ska-scene 05-04-2006 04:57 PM

I copied one of my reviews for the Skylar CD onto the Sputnik things, and the response I got was I should keep at it and I might make a good reviewer. Haha, that makes me nervous as I've been writing reviews hardcore for like 3 years, and I'm a journalism student!

Catchthe22 05-04-2006 08:55 PM

Haha. Combining that it was your first review posted on sputnik and that it was in a different style then the basic song lay out, they were pretty quick to judge. The review written very well and I can definitly tell you have experience in writing.

Kithkin 05-05-2006 01:44 AM

They paned my first Streetlight review.

Kithkin 05-07-2006 06:50 AM

Huh... I have 212 views on my one man band's myspace profile. I guess some people will click on anything...

Anyway, I put up a short, early version of a song. It's working title is "Bad Ska with Fruity Loops." Yay for single chord progressions.

wakethedead 05-09-2006 02:41 PM

did anybody just hear Sonic Boom Six featuring Coolie Ranks on Radio 1's Lock-up?

the-UK-ska-scene 05-09-2006 03:12 PM

Nah I bloody missed it cus I only just got in, I well wanted to hear it too. But the main reason I'm tuning in is for The King Blues, and they're on now and they're only playing The Sound of Revolt! So everything is perfect with the world again :)

aim for about 20 minutes in, it's around there

Kithkin 05-11-2006 11:50 AM

Isn't the big news on that radio broadcast that Lightyear are touring again?

Why don't we have awesome radio shows like this?

Catchthe22 05-11-2006 01:35 PM

By the way, for any of you from Florida, the Spitvalves are playing a reunion show on June 8th. More info can be seen on their myspace(it was commented by old trumpet player, not sure if there is a promotion flyer for it.)
Isn't the big news on that radio broadcast that Lightyear are touring again?

lol, I would have mentioned it but I've got sick of everyone I know telling me that they're touring again. Not sick of the fact that they are touring just the people going every 15 minutes "did you know...."

the-UK-ska-scene 05-14-2006 09:30 AM

Heh, yeah it got all spread around the internet during the day before the evening radio show was broadcast. It's an okay show, sometimes far too emo for its own good, but Mike Davies' personal music taste is pretty decent. What do you think of The King Blues on there, Kith?

I know someone who's following the entire Lightyear tour around England. I'm only gonna make it to a couple of shows.

Catchthe22 05-14-2006 02:08 PM

The Suicide Machines broke up, just to let you guys know.

Miek 05-14-2006 03:06 PM

So, it turns out that my guitar teacher has played with the Skatilites a few times.

Kithkin 05-14-2006 10:34 PM

Over here in the US we don't get much news about Lightyear. The King Blues were pretty good, but not really my cup of tea.

Fuck

That's pretty cool funkymike. The Skatalites tend to play with whatever competent musicians that they know.

asdf 05-15-2006 05:19 PM

I know that no one here is a big fan of Mustard Plug, but I thought this was kind of neat. I found a video of them performing at my towns "street fair" because it's where they grew up. They play it every other year or so, and this video is from 2002. I remember when this performance happened, and even remember where I was and who I was with. I was just starting to get into ska, and I really wanted to be in the crowd, but since I was only in 7th grade, I couldn't be separated from my brother. It's pretty cool to see them playing right in the middle of my neighborhood though.

Kithkin 05-17-2006 09:35 PM

I don't like Mustard Plug recordings, but they're fun live.

They look kind of boring on that video though.
So, it turns out that my guitar teacher has played with the Skatilites a few times.
That's pretty sweet
The Suicide Machines broke up, just to let you guys know.
That sucks. Haven't heard much of their stuff lately, but their odler albums were definitely fun to listen to.
They're great live.
