I have one of his shows. Its funny and at the same time makes you uneasy.
He has a way of sneaking his opinions up on you through metaphorical jokes and such. "Pick up the gun...." |
Do it. If any of the regulars in this thread haven't heard/seen/read anything by Bill Hicks before, then I'd really recommend it too. Not only because of the influence that he had on Tool (and also Radiohead incidentally), but also because I can honestly say that I've never found myself laughing as hard as I have when I hear his comedy routines.
Yes, Iai, I'd love to hear some Bill Hicks, I've been meaning to get some, but....... |
Bill Hicks is the shiznit, I have Rant In E Minor and it is hilarious.
|
I've listened to a good bit of Bill Hicks - Arizona Bay, Dangerous, Relentless, and Philosophy. I must say, he's quite funny and still makes a good argument at the same time. He's probably my second favorite comedian, but I think it's kinda cool about him and Tool working together. I feel that listening to him helps me learn a little more about Tool's opinions on life and how they view the different ordeals going on.
I'll be looking for more Porcupine Tree, I have In Abstenia, and I love it.
Anywho, anybody speculate as to the costumes Maynard will wear on the next Tool tour?
Hopefully he dishes out that leather suit he had during Lateralus... that was tight. Literally. |
who is your favorite comedian?
i love what ive heard from Hicks btw.
George Carlin - I'm seeing him in September, it should be good fun. |
I like Dane Cook, Ardal O'Hanlon (funny Irish man), and the like.
Can't wait to hear Bill Hicks. Thanks, Iai! |
I like... Jerry Seinfeld. :D

Carlin is awsome, one of my favorites. |
Crap. 60 megs! :upset: 60 megs+ 4.7 kbps= no good for me
Iai- Numerous Tool fans think that Eulogy is a tribute to Hicks(I personally think Maynard is taking a stab at L. Ron Hubbard, but that's just me) and also the allusions to Arizona Bay in Ænema(the song) make me seem to think that Tool definitely wanted to make Ænima some sort of ode to Hicks. |
I also think Stinkfist is a tribute of sorts - Hicks often used disgusting sexual images to shock his audience. Like Randy Pan the goatboy.

(-) lons
I dont listen to Tool much but I am downloading the songs from their Aenima cd. But I cant seem to find (-) lons. Do any of you guys have this song on your computer or something so you can send it to me? Or can someone email it to me or something? thanks

Iai...is the last track named 'Elvis' or 'Charlie Hodge'?

:upset: Iai- I've never heard that one, but it does actually sound logical. The only meaning I've heard about Stinkfist is that it is about becoming de-sensitized(sp?) by television, war, etc..The allusions to 'fisting' become progressively more grotesque, showing how after a period of time, the body becomes accustomed to things, whether it be fear, or stimulation. In this case, the metaphor is comparing stimulation to fear. Both convey a sense of shock, and over a period of time, being exposed to the 'shock' will make you less prone to noticing it. Wow, I wanted that to be more concise sp1406- If you're having trouble finding it, you don't really need to have it, since it is just a 4 minute filler track made up of static and storm-like sound effects created with a peice of sheet metal. |

Ions^ The band have often said that aenima is a tribute to hicks, i think he's mentioned in the liner notes. Eulogy seems mainly an attack at figures like Hubbard that saw/see themselves as martyrs. |
sp1406, it's called (-) ions, with a lowercase 'i'.
Hope that helps! |

The upload would've been quicker, but, cool. Guys...I'm loving Arizona Bay....thanks a million, Iai! |
Iai...is the last track named 'Elvis' or 'Charlie Hodge'?
Charlie Hodge. Glad you're enjoying it. Hicks is one of my heroes. |
L.A. Falls is a great track.....on Amazon it says 'Elvis', but I'll take your word for it.
|
Out of interest, how many of you have heard Arizona Bay by Bill Hicks? If the name doesn't click, Bill Hicks is the comedian included in the liners to Aenima with the quote 'Another Dead Hero'. He supported Tool on tour a couple times, too. Those samples on Third Eye ("Those musicians who enhanced your lives....." etc.) are from Hicks.
Anyway, hearing Arizona Bay puts Aenima in a different light. In fact, I'd go as far as calling everything on Aenima (not just Third Eye and the title track) a tribute to Hicks. I can upload it if you like.
We actually talked about that pretty early in this thread, however, I've only given a listen to Arizona Bay recently. I love Hicks; a lot of his act isn't laugh out loud funny, but he makes you think. It's quality social satire. |

Does it? I got Charlie Hodge off a Hicks fan site. Hmm. Edit: I just looked around, and everywhere seems to say Elvis. Guess I was wrong. |
