You're going to need lots of money. And I mean lots. Scandanavia is the most expensive region of Europe (with the possible exception of Switzerland), and Norway is the most expensive nation, if I remember correctly.
Yeah I know, I figure I should be able to save money by staying in Youth Hostels and riding the trains around but I have over a year to save up and already have like $1000 in my bank, that's enough to cover a ticket to Stockholm right now.

If You Want Peace Prepare For War

McP3000 05-26-2008 07:28 PM

War isn't real, its all a creation of the government as a form of social control.

Eliminator 05-26-2008 07:31 PM

war is our destiny

Poet 05-26-2008 07:32 PM

Dark is the light, The man you fight,
With all your prayers, incantations,
Running away, a trivial day,
Of judgment and deliverance,
To whom was sold, this bounty soul,
A gentile or a priest ?
Who victored over, the Seljuks,
When the holy land was taken

We will fight the heathens, We will fight the heathens

Was it the riches, of the land, Powers of bright darkness,
That lead the noble, to the East, To fight the heathens

We will fight the heathens, We will fight the heathens

We must call upon our bright darkness,
Beliefs, they're the bullets of the wicked,
One was written on the sword,
For you must enter a room to destroy it,
International security,
Call of the righteous man,
Needs a reason to kill man,
History teaches us so,
The reason he must attain,
Must be approved by his God,
His child, partisan brother of war,

Of war, we don't speak anymore,

We will fight the heathens, We will fight the heathens

Just make sure you have around $1000 more than you expect to spend. I thought I was doing well, since I was getting 5 DNK for 1 AUD and 7SEK for 1 AUD, but I got burned by the naturally high prices over there. ($9 US for a burger!)

All of the Scandinavian countries bar Finland still use their version of the Krona. Unfortunately you can't use one type of kronor in another country. :( That means if you're going to only be in Denmark for 3 days, don't convert all your money to Danish kronor in case you get a crappy exchange rate when you get into Sweden/Norway. Also, when I was there, the Danes had the strongest currency.

So are you flying into Stockholm, and working your way west? If so, Skåne, the southern part of Sweden, gives discount railway tickets to people under 26, or students (but you have to have an ISIC). And you should consider getting a Scanrail pass, it saves you about 25-40% on most rail tickets, I believe. Also, HI hostels sometimes give temporary membership for a reduced price, which can save you on accomodation, but if you're going to stay with them the entire way through, getting a full membership will work out a lot less expensive. However, in my experience the HI hostels were dearer than some other hostels.

If you go to Malmö, I strongly recommend staying at Villa Hilleröd, it's just west of Malmö Central (and the train station) and it's relatively cheap and very comfy. However, most of Sweden (and Copenhagen apparently) don't have public laundromats; weird I know. So prepare to be smelly, or make friends with people who live in houses (apartment blocks have rostered laundry hours and therefore your mates who live there might not be able to accommodate you even if they wanted to).

Other than that, just keep an eye out for bargains and buy as much as you can at the grocery stores. Most decent hostels will have a kitchen, unless you're in a town with strange fire codes, and make sure you have a Maxi Burger whilst in Stockholm! Best burgers ever.
