Tangerine, Friends, That's The Way, Gallow's Pole = the greatest

Illmatic 01-21-2005 08:28 PM
I don't like to talk about Led Zeppelin in this thread and try to avoid it but I have to say that Zeppelin III is their most underrated album. It's my second favorite avter Houses.

w00t. also super cool post count!
Actually, considering it's a Led Zeppelin album, III is an underrated classic rock album period.
Tangerine, Friends, That's The Way, Gallow's Pole = the greatest
Very true. That's the Way is a great song. Does anyone know if that's a fiddle at the end of gallows pole? i always thought it was a fiddle, but someone told me it was just Page playing his electric. I just wanna clarify.

RockISdead420 01-21-2005 08:34 PM

Would you consider earlier Funkadelic CLassic Rock or what Funk ROck moreso or what? or shall we call it Pfunk

I'm 100% sure that's an electric guitar.

I'd call them "awesome".

They're funk-rock, but they released terrific albums in the 70's and did lots of drugs, so they qualify.
On the Grateful Dead topic:

I am going to get Skull & Roses for my birthday. :thumb: How many songs on it are covers? Badmoon's review metioned that a lot of the songs were covers, not that it's a bad thing.
That's a great album. I also highly recommend it.

jpj 01-21-2005 08:43 PM
JPJ knows most of them
I feel so proud :)
I ended up ordering Wlly and the Poor Boys, Beginnings, Aoxomoxoa, and Blue Light Rain.
I just got Aoxomoxoa and love it, those are definitely good choices.
Jack Cassidy=Ownage on Bass(on the topic of Jefferson Airplane)
Yes he does, and on the topic of Jack Cassidy everyone check out Hot Tuna because they rock.

And Funkadelic is awesome, I love Uncle Jam Wants You.

EDIT: What happened to Badmoon's postcount

thickasabrick 01-21-2005 08:44 PM
I'm 100% sure that's an electric guitar.
you know, you're right. i just listened to the song for the first time in a long time, and it doesn't even sound like a fiddle. maybe it was just how i remembered it in my head.

Illmatic 01-21-2005 08:49 PM

When it first comes in, it kind of sounds like a fiddle, but then as it became more prominent it revealed itself as electric guitar.

It's funny, really; my two least favorite songs on III are the two most popular (Immigrant Song and Since I've Been Loving You).

Also, when I was gushing about the great songs from III, I left out Bron-Y-Aur Stomp and Celebration Day.

lunch998 01-21-2005 08:59 PM

It's strange how everyone thinks of III as an entirely acoustic album, when in fact the first side is basically rock.

I like how "Friends" leads into Celebration Day.

Illmatic 01-21-2005 09:01 PM

I can't believe more people don't listen to this record. I think it's easily their most compelling album.

Sometimes I really get in the mood for it, other times I don't. I still find LZ I to be my favorite.

To each his own.

...Has anyone ever heard of this band??? i just recently heard them, and i think they are awesome! If you have heard them tell me watch cha think?

PS: they kinda have a classic rock sound to them, there no Led Zeppelin but they are still good IMO

lunch998 01-21-2005 09:25 PM
To each his own.
That's an evolution for you. I was expecting to hear how much you hate LZ I and that I suck :p

BludgeonySteve 01-21-2005 09:25 PM

Generic hard rock. If I want their kind of music it's listen to Ac/dc because Ac/dc has songs that i'll care to remember 5 hours after listening to them.

Against Miik! 01-21-2005 09:25 PM

I've gotten sick of Zeppelin for the moment. I'm trying to explore some other types of music. Recently i've been gettin into The Roots, The Temptations, Phish, Oar, Kanye West, Elmore James, and, umm..Counting Crows..

jpj 01-21-2005 09:26 PM

These people were giving away their demos at CD Warehouse and I didn't think they were anything special. Just another hard rock group.

I go in and out of Zeppelin, right now I'm a jamband type phase.

jpj 01-21-2005 09:27 PM

Zeppelin will always hold a special place in my heart :)

I'm no Zeppelin fan, but III stands out as a terrific album. Lately I've just been listening to III, Miles Smiles by Miles Davis, and New Morning by Bob Dylan.

Also, I hate Counting Crows, but The Roots and Kanye West (even if he is an arrogant, ubiquitious fuck) both merit :thumb: <-- that
That's an evolution for you. I was expecting to hear how much you hate LZ I and that I suck
Well, I like you, so I'm not going to insult you, and as a whole I've mellowed out a lot.

Plus, LZ I isn't so much a bad album as much as it is a boring one.

Hey thanks man, I like you to.

So anyway, The Who Sell Out is underrated. Rael is such a great song, no one realizes it holds the beginning of the Tommy riffs.

Illmatic 01-21-2005 09:34 PM

The Who Sell Out is another album I feel is very underrated.

I haven't listened to it a whole lot lately, so I can't comment further.

I think some people can't take it seriously because of the advertisements, but musically it is very strong. Plus another thing about the early Who is that Daltrey doesn't have to use his hard rock voice/power on every track.

Illmatic 01-21-2005 09:41 PM

Actually, his voice never changed. But when they were recording Who's Next, they recruited a new producer who gave them that big arena sound.

The earlier Who have a lot more melody, harmony, and range to me then The Who of Who's Next and after.

Illmatic 01-21-2005 09:47 PM

That may be so, but I always preferred Who's Next and Quadrophenia. Can't put my finger on it. Any Who is good Who, I always say.

BludgeonySteve 01-21-2005 09:49 PM
Actually, his voice never changed. But when they were recording Who's Next, they recruited a new producer who gave them that big arena sound.
That really changed their sound. Before that it was a little more gritty. I don't know which is better but there's defintly a difference.

Against Miik! 01-21-2005 09:51 PM

Stop talking about the Who. I don't like the Who, I know nothing about them, and I feel excluded.

Yea I agree, any Who is good Who. I just grew up listening to early Who, so I like it more.

BludgeonySteve 01-21-2005 09:53 PM
Stop talking about the Who. I don't like the Who, I know nothing about them, and I feel excluded.
Tough it out. Every time badmoon and JPJ go all jam bandy I sit in the corner wishing somebody would bring up The Grateful Dead or The Allman Brothers.

Illmatic 01-21-2005 09:53 PM

My first Who song was "Baba O'Riley"...I'd imagine I speak for a lot of people when I say that.

I also remember when I was about 11 or 12, I'd imagine, seeing Keith Moon's "Behind The Music" on VH1. That's what got me interested in the first place.

Illmatic 01-21-2005 09:54 PM

And rock not roll is right, Badmoon could go on one of his extended rants about how awesome Phil Lesh and Warren Haynes are.

jpj 01-21-2005 09:54 PM
Stop talking about the Who. I don't like the Who, I know nothing about them, and I feel excluded.
I like The Who, but I don't know anything about them other than A quick One and Who's Next are both kickass.

I'll just observe until someone brings up something else.

lunch998 01-21-2005 09:54 PM

Tommy and The Who Sell Out were my favorite albums when I was a kid.

Illmatic 01-21-2005 09:56 PM

I never dug Tommy as much as their other albums. It's good to be sure, but it never seemed to be as great as My Generation, Sell Out, Who's Next, Live at Leeds, or Quadrophenia. It's on the same level as A Quick One and a little ahead of Who Are You and Magic Bus in my book.

BludgeonySteve 01-21-2005 09:58 PM
And rock not roll is right, Badmoon could go on one of his extended rants about how awesome Phil Lesh and Warren Haynes are.
Warren Haynes, being in the Allmans I actually decided to look into some of his solo stuff. But anything else and i'm gone.

Illmatic 01-21-2005 10:01 PM

Well, you get my point.
