I think Akerfeldt is at his beset on Still Life overall. The clean vocals have more feel on that album IMO, and the growls are the most clear.
|
I think Ghost Reveries is their best release yet.
Plus it has one of my favorite Opeth songs: The Grand Conjuration I'm only comparing it to Damnation and Blackwater Park though. |
Right now, I'd have to say I like My Arms, Your Hearse best. That album grows on me every time I listen to it, which is scary considering the fact that I already love it.
|
MAYH is awesome! That was the first Opeth album I bought, so it obviously has a special place in my heart.
Ah, the memories... |
I think it's the best. Everything is great. The riffing is great, production is probably the best out of any of their albums, and Akefeldt's voice is at its absolute best on there.
And I think hearing The Drapery Falls live really made me like that song better.
BWP is close to being the greatest, but IMO it takes a dip in quality between the end of The Drapery Falls (the death metal part basically) and most of The Funeral Portrait...whereas Still Life, which is the other main competitor for the top, is solid 100% of the way through. BWP is helped massively by Steven Wilson's producing skill, though. It just sounds so much more refined and intricate. |
Still Life bores the crap out of me.
|
When I'm listening to Still Life i tend to get bored after Godhead's Lament. Its probably just cause i don't feel like listening to the whole album.
|
Still Life is good. I gotta be in the mood though.

Poke.
Righto, I'm really really really into Opeth and Agalloch at the mo and I want to dig up as many bands that are doing similar stuff to these two. Any bands that match these kinda criteria: - Mixture of clean/growled vocals - Proggy bits - Acoustic sections - Riffage Anything going is good :). |
You could always try Woods of Ypres, but they don't have growls. Instead they have harsh, black metal-ish vocals. That's the only similar band that I can think of at the moment.
|
Righto, I'm on the case .
|
NOVEMBERS DOOM!
Why do people not like them that much? I think they're really good. The Funeral Portrait I could care less about, but Dirge For November has some really awesome parts in it. |
Novembers Dooms a decent band. Just not on the level of Opeth. Dark Feilds for Brilliance is a really sweet song though.

I'm well aware they're not as good as Opeth, but people give them a lot of **** for no good reason. I think they're one of the best American bands around today. |
People give them ****? I didn't know that. I didn't think they got enough attention to get ****.
|
There's always Orphaned Land. They're kinda like a Middle-Eastern Opeth. :D
|
To the guy asking for recommendations, try these bands:
Novembre Soundsleep Sculptured Drudkh (They have nothing to do with Opeth but they're really similar to Agalloch) Empyrium |

Camel \m/ They may just be the most metal non-metal band. |
Check out Pelican. They are filed under post-rock, but they switch between really doomy chugging riff and some sweet dissonant acoustic parts. They are all instrumental, though. Still, really great band for anybody with a decent attention span...
The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw is a brilliant piece of music... |

Nah, I've seen some people around give them **** before. I don't even remember how I found out about them...think it was on a search for female fronted bands. :p |
I saw the Novembres Doom video for Pale Haunt Departure and I thought it was horrible. Not even close to Opeth's level.

That kinda went the other way then.
I saw the Novembres Doom video for Pale Haunt Departure and I thought it was horrible. Not even close to Opeth's level.
The Pale Haunt is a decent song, but thats not the song I'd use to say the band has some similarities to Opeth. In that song theres no clean sections with there acoustic guitars (kinda like Opeth) and there clean vocals (not as good as Opeth, but still decent). |

Pffffffffffft. Go listen to your Ghost Reveries, nubcake. On a side note, My Arms, Your Hearse finally clicked with me. It's in my top 3 now. |
Yeah, it does that.
|
My Arms, Your Hearse was just okay for me. Nothing special, really. Orchid and Deliverance still remain my favorite albums.
|
That's how it was for me for about a year, now. After a while I finally 'got it.'
It's a fantastic album. |
MAYH and Orchid are the Opeth albums I want the most right now :-/
|
My Arms, Your Hearse is definitaly my favorite, with Blackwater Park coming in second.
