the thing with sweeping, at least for me, is that its all about a fluid right hand (picking motion). A lot of people talk about the picking 'falling' to the next string, meaning you pick the note, and kinda stop at the second string before you pick it (at slow speeds)

When sped up, you should be able to feel each string being "swept"
The thing is, my upstroke is fine and sounds badass, but my downstroke sucks. I have the urge because of my own playing style to just pick all the notes really fast, instead of sweeping the archipeggio. It's very frustrating.

<<<<<is a horribly repetitive shredder

kurrpt 03-24-2006 11:58 AM

well, JP alt picks arpeggios on his recordings, so if you CAN do it, sh!t, whats the problem?

If you realize your downstrokes need work, focus on that problem

purgatory 03-24-2006 12:22 PM

I know I cant do arpeggios to save my life.

kurrpt 03-24-2006 12:23 PM
I know I cant do arpeggios to save my life.
its amazingly GOOD practice for both hands. I suggest you start. It will help in more areas than you'd anticipate

purgatory 03-24-2006 12:30 PM

Can you tell me a site where i can learn them? I have no idea where to start!

kurrpt 03-24-2006 12:32 PM

arpeggios, sure...

John petrucci has a pretty decent warm up exercise, involving alternate picked major barre chords with string skipping. give me ur email and ill tab the basic shape for ya. Obviously, since its a barre chord, you could really do it anywhere on the fretboard

purgatory 03-24-2006 12:36 PM

GREAT!

I did just put a really nice sweep in a solo of mine thoug (of course, it's just a 4 note upstroke lol)....sounds badass....

kurrpt 03-24-2006 01:03 PM

sweet man. I really havent written anything that involves sweeps

Invicta_Veritas 03-24-2006 01:08 PM
sweet man. I really havent written anything that involves sweeps
I thought it sounded cool, and I was sick of doing the same things with the same pentatonic scale, so I threw in an upstroke sweep (the only thing I can do).

kurrpt 03-24-2006 01:11 PM

learn some new scales, or some modes then man. If you are "getting bored" with pentatonics, check out rusty cooleys, or shawn lanes videos on that particular subject

Forlorn Hope 03-24-2006 02:28 PM

If it's not a hassle could you send the sweeping exercise to me as well?
three_over_one@msn.com

kurrpt 03-24-2006 03:03 PM

it was actually string skipping, alternate pick exercise, but if you want a few sweeps, im sure i could hook you up

kurrpt 03-24-2006 03:06 PM

i sent 2, 5 string sweeps

I'm Charming 03-24-2006 04:43 PM

This could really help me as well. I'd like a copy if you had time to send it. :thumb:
I need to work on sweeps.

Props to Che for helping everyone out.

I am so excited about the upcoming Hot Topic tour, some of my favorite bands are on it. Bodom isn't my priority there though :-(

Slayer? I'd kill to see Slayer live.

I've already seen Bodom though I'd love to again. Lamb Of God is sick live as well.
Mastodon is pretty sweet as well.

Thine Eyes Bleed is pathetic though.

The tour should be called,

Hahaha :p

Although, I'm not a huge thrash fanatic (Slayer might be a pretty fun show, though)...but Thine Eyes Bleed and Lamb of God??? Go -core yourself.

I would, however, be pretty stoked to see Mastodon live. Brann Dailor is a fucking beast.

A REAL show? Yeah, I'm seeing DragonForce at the New England Metal & Hardcore fest in a few weeks. Beat that :p
