Choirs was easy to be honest. I think Dowsing is a more challenging, eclectic record overall. I also am growing to really like its stripped down sound a lot. A lot of good trumpet playing on there. There are certain parts which don't catch your attention at first but after many, many listens it starts to convey something you somehow missed before.
I listened to it high last night, and that **** is killer. And this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ticUb_xx7eI, oh my god, so intense. |
Aura is definitely the weakest track on it though.
Yeah, definitely one of my favorite trippin bands. I wish I got high more often again.
Based on that video, Aura is better live. But I like the song better than Imortelle, but not by much.
I especially like the part on Imortelle where the double bass starts coming in. |
Imortelle is so utterly perfect. Aura is kinda drifty in the middle.
Amaranth the Peddler probably has the best lyrics oat. I love the vampire selling his wares part, classic.
I'm pretty sure that the end of Aura has a good bit of improv, would you happen to know for sure jarred? I think my favorite moment of Dowsing is during Immortelle when the bass and reverb guitars come in. As per usual, perfect note choice. Pretty curious as to what the spinny-sounding thing is throughout. |
It's too bad they lost Greg, he was a real asset I think.

I think Toby once said in an interview that all of Dowsing was meticulously composed sans the spacing between moments. Don't take my word for it though.
I think they could stand to open it up to a little more spontaneity.
Is the double bass played with a bow? If so, then we're talking about different parts.
And Kage you think that about every band, I'm pretty sure. Even Zorn. |
Yeah the part I'm talking about is the bow part.

still awesome, but I prefer the first entrance.
And yeah I was definitely wrong about the end of Aura, definitely not improvised. Good none the less, especially during the overdriven bass/drum thrashing/feedback section. Vicious. Also, is it confirmed that Kayo Dot's next record will be released on Hydra Head? If so, epic. Boris too. Epic. |
Did you watch it on the video? Ten times better live imo.
Too busy blasting ___ On Limpid Form tbh
That song is horrifying really loud. The way they build that long droning passage up is beyond description.
And I love the choir voices in the "songy" part of it. |
Kingly Ships in Ecstacy..or something
Oh yes my friend. The imagery is brilliant. And yeah, I got scared after the second percussion loudass thing came in on Limpid. |
i haven't look into kayo dot, but maudlin of the well was very good.
boris is pretty good too. i was actually pretty surprised to see them in the record store. what album should i get first? |
Akuma No Uta, I guess.
By Boris or Kayo Dot?
Oh well. Choirs of the Eye is easier to digest for Kayo Dot. I'd say Rainbow or Pink for some good rawkin' Boris. If you want the more amazing side, I suggest you get torched and give Feedbacker a listen. |

i'll get akuma no uta the next time i go CD shopping.
Akuma No Uta was my first taste of Boris and I wasn't very impressed. Rainbow is the superior album.
Rainbow is not representative of Boris at all. So if you're looking for an amazing album, Rainbow is good but if you're looking for an introduction to Boris, Rainbow would be a sore miscalculation.
I only have Flood, which of course is fantastic. I tried Pink as well, but it was a little too noisy for me.
Pink is the one I got first and it was a good introduction to the band, I thought.
I was into Boris before Pink came out, that's how cool I am.
Well then your opinion on the validity of Pink as an intro album is nil
gtfo |
what about droneevil? recommended?
Yes, very heartily. One of my favorites, especially if you sync the two discs.
I'm a bigger fan of the lighter Boris material.
And I don't like Kayo Dot :( |
Lighter, like what?
Flood, Rainbow, Akuma No Uta etc
Eh, I would hardly call Akuma No Uta, but those are great albums and actually you just listed my three favorites. :)
If you tell me Boris is nothing like their shitty-*** split with SunnO, then I'll check them out. But you better be right. Or I'll track you down. And do......bad things to you.
Wait, you mean their collab with Sunn, Altar? If so, most Boris is different and they have a lot of different sounds they tackle.
sunn O))) is pretty boring.
Sunn is terrible, although I do like the Sunn/Boris collab because it feeds off of both bands' energies.
I hate how almost every band with a drone type sound is compared to them.
