Let There Be More Light is my favourite from SoS, just because it's such a great album opener.

MidnightRider 03-11-2006 09:56 AM

I just saw a commercial for On An Island, it looks awesome. I'm gonna pick it up later on today, I've got high expectations.

I love your avatar. I'm not a Huge fan of SoS, but it is still a good album.
Haha, Pow R. Toc H. scared you?

I kid. I kid because I love.
: (

Only a bit.

BigTrav415 03-11-2006 11:34 PM

How can Pow R. Toc H. scare you?!? That song makes me happy and smiley whenver I listen to it. How can you not cheer up listening to all those silly sounds?
My favorite has to be towards the beginning where they come out of the intro with a "Whaa-WHAAAA!" I can never keep myself from laughing at that part.

PATGOD cheers you up so much, save for a few neutralish tracks like Matilda Mother and Scarecrow, every song on there is upbeat, humorous, and happy. How can you listen to Bike without smiling? You can't, that's how.

God I miss Syd :( :( :(

It's awfully considerate of you to think of me here
And I'm much obliged to you for making it clear
That I'm not here.
And I never knew we could be so thick
And I never knew we could be so blue
And I'm grateful that you threw away my old shoes
And brought me here instead dressed in red
And I'm wondering who could be writing this song.
I don't care if the sun don't shine
And I don't care if nothing is mine
And I don't care if I'm nervous with you
I'll do my loving in the winter.
And the sea isn't green
And I love the queen
And what exactly is a dream
And what exactly is a joke.

I'm talking about the ending part where it sounds like all the doy doys are being killed. : (

But yeah, it is a good album for cheering you up.

Lunch 03-11-2006 11:53 PM

PATGOD has the opposite effect on me. The songs themselves are humorous and witty, but the connotation of the album as a whole is very negatvie due to what happened to Syd in its wake.

I suppose I too find this happening to me aswell, once I start thinking about Syd.

Considering it is one of the few, and probably best, of Syd's works, I can't help but enjoy it, even though I as well can't help but feel badly that there could have been so many more good things for Syd (and us) if things had gone differently :(

Great, now I'm depressed.

/puts on The Wall and broods

MidnightRider 03-12-2006 09:05 AM

I get a somewhat negative vibe from Piper, even though all the songs are relatively positive. Bike is the only song the makes me smile, the rest sort of calm me down and make my mind drift away. Like Lunch said, knowing what happened to Syd afterwards makes the album sort of sad.

Hamilcar 03-12-2006 12:56 PM

Finding Meddle on Vinyl the other day inspired me to get a record player. Just thought I'd let everyone know, it's exciting...

Does anyone have an mp3 (not stream) of the gilmour concert?

mine has a couple of jumps in it...

I can never get over that song.

I really love Pow R Toc H, easily my favourite Syd era song.

Ya, I have about 50 of my own and 100 of my dads, and about 300-400 of my dads that he inherited from a friend that died. It ranges from PF to Demons and Wizards to original Sinatra to Basie to Duke Ellignton to spanish tangos to classical.

I do. Vinyl albums sound better than CD's, hands down. Usually I'll go down to my basement and play a record my dad has, that I have on CD, just cuz it sounds better. He's got some great vintage speakers, or rather stuff he still had as a kid. Too bad I'm not allowed to turn it up too loud :upset:

MidnightRider 03-12-2006 10:31 PM

I've got about 35 vinyl and my dad has somewhere around 400. Unfortunately, I don't own a record player.

I love Pow R Toc H, but Astronomy Domine will always be my favorite Syd era song.

Jim 03-13-2006 01:52 AM

The only respectable vinyl I have is the Beatles boxset. Other than that the collection's pretty lean. And Flaming's my favourite Syd era song.

temporary 03-13-2006 03:03 PM

Pow R Toc H and Astronomy Domine are my fav Syd songs. Personally, I've always gotten a really positive vibe from Syd's songs.

I picked up On an Island last night, great album; Gilmour hasn't lost a thing. Some of the slide solos sound straigh from Echoes.

Kaleidoscope Eyes 03-13-2006 03:42 PM

I think The Scarecrow is my favorite Syd song

Catchthe22 03-14-2006 05:25 PM

Lucifer Sam is nice :)

DeusExMachina 03-14-2006 05:28 PM

Jugband Blues. Best Syd song. Hands down.

I just picked up on an Island and I love it. Its brilliant stuff.

That was the first Syd song I heard, I thought it rather odd at first and didn't like it. Great song though.

I want On An Island so bad, all I've heard is the title track and it's great.

I was impressed with it. I can't wait to hear him do some of them live. You know one of my problems with some of Gilmour's post Waters Floyd years is it almost sounds sometimes like hes trying to prove that he was as good Pink Floyd was in their prime. This sounds like he abandoned that compleatly and just played his heart out. In other words this is the first post Roger Floyd album he realsed (solo or with the other Floyd members) that I really felt was his own.

So yeah, I finally watched The Wall for the first time the other day. Wasn't anywhere near as trippy as people go on about. I mean, some parts were pretty abstract but if you already understand the ideas behind the music, it's quite clear. It's really just the album in pictures. I quite liked it! It was bold and original!

PS - Got TDB on high rotation atm. Talk about underrated.

Music wise it's one of the great floyd albums there is, I guess it's nr 3 on my list of best floyd albums only outclassed by WYWH and DSOTM
Wasn't anywhere near as trippy as people go on about.
The only really trippy part is the animation sequences, other than that it's just sort of odd and freaky. I hate the part where he shaves his nipples and eye brows off.

Indeed; it really is great, some of Gilmour's guitar work is great .. my favourites on the album have to be Poles Apart and Coming Back To Life. However, it just doesn't have a Pink Floyd feel to it ... it's such a shame that Waters' was an arrogant so and so :p, or else they would have had a couple more decades of their great 70's stuff.

NP - Fearless, love the lyrics to this, awesome ...
