I still don't see all the hype around the song Sawdust&Diamonds. Emily is way better.

Eliminator 11-14-2006 04:19 PM

every song on that album is perfect
if i wanted to pick up a sam cooke record, where would you recommend i start?
NOT with Portrait Of A Legend. It's massively biased towards sugary, pointless pop, and it's impossible to sit through the entire thing (or even about 5 tracks) without getting a sweet tooth. Get Live At The Harlem Club.
Listening to Endtroducing for the first time in probably 2 years. And hey, this is actually really good.
Hah. Knew you'd come round eventually.

Robert Crumb 11-14-2006 05:29 PM

Live recordings of Sam Cooke > studio recordings. I can only imagine how amazing he would have been to hear perform live. But as far as studio recordings go, Portrait of a Legend is the place to start. I wouldn't say the songs are pointless or sugary (especially compared to some of his other stuff,) but they definitely don't capture his joie de vivre. Really, I just wanted to say joie de vivre.

Also, if you have a elastic price range, Man Who Invented Soul might be worth considering. It's got his RCA recordings (the whole of both Night Beat and Harlem Club included) and most everything he wrote during the middle of his career. It doesn't have some of his biggest hits, namely "A Change is Gonna Come," "Shake," and a couple other of his later songs, though. Portrait is probably a better general overview of career because it has a little bit of his early gospel recordings (ok, like one or two) up to his very last recordings. And it's cheaper.

Currently listening to Teddybears and Pavement, other scattered stuff. I might have to listen to some Sam Cooke now.

Jackson C. Frank- Blues Runs the Game
Sun Kil Moon- Ghosts of the Great Highway
Great Lake Swimmers- Bodies and Minds

These nice, kind of sad, folkish albums go so well with the atmosphere of late fall.

Zebra 11-14-2006 05:42 PM

Herbie Hancock - Sextant

This is soooooooo good.

I think they're all pretty perfect, 4 listens in mind you, but that one just blows me away more than others, probably because it has a pop structure, freaking fantastic lyrics, and uses tension perfectly. Those minutes in between the last two choruses are just so excruciatingly great because you know the incredible tension of the droning part will get resolved, but not before making you wait forever for it. Just sends chills down my spine when she lets out those "oh, desire" repititions.

Belle & Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister

This is one of those records I throw on when I'm depressed and every time I hear it I find something new I love about it. It's melodic and poppy without being wimpy, and the lyrics are clever but not cutesy.

Wow, thank you. These two artists really make me happy. I actually heard a Josephine Foster song a couple days ago and was like, "who is the person of whom I know nothing?" Nice stuff, thanks.

Ys is pretty good. from the reaction in this thread, looks like it could be this years hype album.

I'm digging;
Manitoba - Up In Flames
Madvillain - Madvillainy
65 Days of Static - The Fall of Math

dei 11-15-2006 12:12 PM

Madvillainy is a good album, on the reals.

So true. Plus, Ys is way too inaccessible for hipsters to latch onto. No hipster gonna jam to a 17 minute song on the way to class.

Sunny Day Real Estate - Diary
It's a little bit repetitive, but there are some great tunes on here. 'Grendel' is a cool track.

Red house Painters - Ocean Beach
I've had this for a while, but only just started listening to it properlly. Pretty beautiful for the most part.

The internet hype was already substantial and they could've been the ones to break with the first big review. But no, instead they give one paragraph on how the album's too long.

Yeah, it's ridiculously stupid.
