just got the bass. looks good sounds good, but needs new strings (always do) and the poles on the jazz pups have some slight rust.

any thoughts on how to home remedy the rust issue?

bridge is a bit rusty as well.

fatbandit 06-12-2011 07:10 PM

Wire wool? Idk. You'd probably scratch the pups to high heaven though.

Saw Tera Melos again today. Extra epic.

Also, lost my shit at this:

high grit sand paper. i wouldnt think steel wool is a good idea since there might be filings that stick to the poles.

Epidemechanical 06-12-2011 11:19 PM

i need a new bridge for my fender five string

suggestions?

gaslight 06-13-2011 12:32 AM

What's wrong with the current one?

Are we talking possibly just a replacement job or you want an upgrade?

Epidemechanical 06-13-2011 05:08 AM

replacement or upgrade. the current bridge is quite rusty and one of the action adjustment pegs sucks on the B string

Epidemechanical 06-13-2011 05:19 AM

this would do the trick right?

gaslight 06-13-2011 05:52 AM

$30 for a bridge? I thought they were a lot pricier than that.

I don't have much experience with any Fender stuff so I can't weigh in unfortunately.

Epidemechanical 06-13-2011 05:56 AM

all i'm concerned with is that it will *fit* the bass, as I'm not sure if bridge screw threads are positioned properly

if it's a MIM that makes it a "standard" therefore a standard bridge should fit, no?

fatbandit 06-13-2011 06:03 AM

Some things about Fenders aren't entirely 'standard'. The scratchplates don't fit from one model to the next, for instance. So I couldn't be sure an American bridge would fit a Mexican Fender. But I would assume so.

Epidemechanical 06-13-2011 06:05 AM

is that an american bridge? it just says standard.

Epidemechanical 06-13-2011 06:07 AM

http://angela.com/fenderstandardjazzbassv5stringbassbridge.aspx

here we go

Epidemechanical 06-13-2011 09:21 AM

contacted my tech about doing some clean up on the bass and installing the bridge for me

there's also a small crack in the headstock that will need to be repaired as well

i basc got the bass for free lmao traded my cheap ass cab for it so i'll take a few dings

FunkMetalBass 06-13-2011 10:27 AM

Steel wool will clean the rust, but the steel shavings will stick to the pickup poles and are an absolute nightmare to clean off. Best of luck there.

With the bridge, a standard bridge will fit. MIM/MIA Fender basses have the same bridge mounting holes.

I've been looking into building a neck lately, because I'm afraid that it will be too expensive to commission the building of a 40" scale 8-string (paired) neck. First I need to buy the bridge from Warmoth, and then see if I can even get the spacing correct before I go further.

Epidemechanical 06-13-2011 10:30 AM

hey funk do you have facebook or something? i'd like to pick your brain about luth questions.

also, why do the american bridges and mexican bridges look different? the mexi has 5 mounting holes, the amer has like 6 in a straight line

the tiny crack int he headstock is an easy fix i presume, yes?

Sure.

A few years ago, Fender changed their American bridges to be nicer so that they could boost the price and seemingly warrant the cost difference. The Fender bridge should still have 5 mounting holes, but then also 5 string holes to be strung thru-body (another upgraded feature of the American series). If they did change it, most parts are still built for the old style, which is what MIM basses use. That bridge you picked out earlier will fit fine.

The tiny crack can be easy to fix, but pinpointing the reason for the crack is the main concern - is it a stress crack from the tension of the strings/truss rod and a weak point in the wood? Or is it an aesthetic crack from a rather hard fall?

gaslight 06-13-2011 11:50 AM

Can you really get Fender bridges for $30?

I remember the price quote on a Schaller bridge being $300.

looks like the bass took some mild abuse, probably from gigging/etc. if i had to guess i'd say he dropped it and it landed on the tuning peg and the stress from the peg getting jarred cracked the wood a bit. it's not from neck tension or stress.

do you know of a reputable place to buy a bridge from? idk some of these sites look shady.

link me something good FMB

There are plenty of no-name brands that make Fender replacement parts. Check eBay. You'll see bridges for less than $50, probably even in your end of the world.

Your bridge, does it have 3 screw holes at the back of the bridge and 2 screws in the front?

edit: like this:

fatbandit 06-13-2011 03:44 PM

Raayl - what bass plugins are you using at the moment? I'm assuming you just use plugins for bass anyways.

Epidemechanical 06-13-2011 09:04 PM

i dont use any effects on bass. just DI, an EQ with a 30 hz HPF and loshelf boost 1.7 dB starting at around 300 hz, and a hard comp to make the WF even.

that is my bridge, yup. 3 near the back, 2 near the front (pickups)

taking it to my guitar tech tomorrow, he said we'll have a look and see if we can just replace some of the parts and not the whole thing. he said he'll also take care of the rust issue as well as the headstock crack. all for about 50 bucks or so (including parts and a setup)
