just got the bass. looks good sounds good, but needs new strings (always do) and the poles on the jazz pups have some slight rust.
any thoughts on how to home remedy the rust issue? bridge is a bit rusty as well. |
Wire wool? Idk. You'd probably scratch the pups to high heaven though.
Saw Tera Melos again today. Extra epic. Also, lost my shit at this: http://forum.breakbeat.co.uk/tm.aspx?m=1972451271&mpage=1 |

i need a new bridge for my fender five string
suggestions? |
What's wrong with the current one?
Are we talking possibly just a replacement job or you want an upgrade? |
replacement or upgrade. the current bridge is quite rusty and one of the action adjustment pegs sucks on the B string
|
this would do the trick right?

$30 for a bridge? I thought they were a lot pricier than that.
I don't have much experience with any Fender stuff so I can't weigh in unfortunately. |
all i'm concerned with is that it will *fit* the bass, as I'm not sure if bridge screw threads are positioned properly
if it's a MIM that makes it a "standard" therefore a standard bridge should fit, no? |
Some things about Fenders aren't entirely 'standard'. The scratchplates don't fit from one model to the next, for instance. So I couldn't be sure an American bridge would fit a Mexican Fender. But I would assume so.
|
is that an american bridge? it just says standard.

here we go |
contacted my tech about doing some clean up on the bass and installing the bridge for me
there's also a small crack in the headstock that will need to be repaired as well i basc got the bass for free lmao traded my cheap ass cab for it so i'll take a few dings |
Steel wool will clean the rust, but the steel shavings will stick to the pickup poles and are an absolute nightmare to clean off. Best of luck there.
With the bridge, a standard bridge will fit. MIM/MIA Fender basses have the same bridge mounting holes. I've been looking into building a neck lately, because I'm afraid that it will be too expensive to commission the building of a 40" scale 8-string (paired) neck. First I need to buy the bridge from Warmoth, and then see if I can even get the spacing correct before I go further. |
hey funk do you have facebook or something? i'd like to pick your brain about luth questions.
also, why do the american bridges and mexican bridges look different? the mexi has 5 mounting holes, the amer has like 6 in a straight line the tiny crack int he headstock is an easy fix i presume, yes? |

The Fender bridge should still have 5 mounting holes, but then also 5 string holes to be strung thru-body (another upgraded feature of the American series). If they did change it, most parts are still built for the old style, which is what MIM basses use. That bridge you picked out earlier will fit fine. The tiny crack can be easy to fix, but pinpointing the reason for the crack is the main concern - is it a stress crack from the tension of the strings/truss rod and a weak point in the wood? Or is it an aesthetic crack from a rather hard fall? |
Can you really get Fender bridges for $30?
I remember the price quote on a Schaller bridge being $300. |
Sure.

Raayl - what bass plugins are you using at the moment? I'm assuming you just use plugins for bass anyways.
|
i dont use any effects on bass. just DI, an EQ with a 30 hz HPF and loshelf boost 1.7 dB starting at around 300 hz, and a hard comp to make the WF even.

edit: like this:
that is my bridge, yup. 3 near the back, 2 near the front (pickups) taking it to my guitar tech tomorrow, he said we'll have a look and see if we can just replace some of the parts and not the whole thing. he said he'll also take care of the rust issue as well as the headstock crack. all for about 50 bucks or so (including parts and a setup) |
