lol, nah i originally asked what to listen to after blackwater park, and they said still life so im asking what would be a good option next :p

Stormrider 06-22-2006 09:55 PM

Oh, my bad. heh

Darkness 06-22-2006 09:56 PM

Go with My Arms, Your Hearse or Deliverance. Or if you want something soft, go Damnation. Then worry about the other three.

eug008 06-22-2006 09:59 PM
good news everyone i have finally gotten into still life, its awesome :thumb:
can anyone recommend what to try next?
Do you prefer Still Life or Blackwater Park?

AA-12 06-22-2006 10:37 PM

Get MA,YH. It's their best album anyway, IMO.

Det_Nosnip 06-22-2006 10:54 PM

Yeah. It'll also prepare you for Morningrise+Orchid, which would be rather shocking if you went straight to them after BWP or Still Life.

ok. ive heard that the older albums are heavier and heading in the melodic death direction, is this true?
Do you prefer Still Life or Blackwater Park?
i still prefer blackwater park

Orchid and Morningrise are not heavier than My Arms, Your Hearse or Deliverance, however, they are very melodic with plenty of dual guitar harmonies and blissful acoustic parts.

If I were you, I'd go and grab MA,YH.
I think it, along with and next to Still Life and Blackwater Park, is the core of Opeth's sound.
Although, you may be pleasantly surprised if you go with Damnation next.

Nostalgia 06-23-2006 12:22 AM

My Arms, Your Hearse has a lot of good tracks, but I don't really like it that much. To Bid You Farwell is such a great song though.

TojesDolan 06-23-2006 01:05 AM

The style of Orchid and Morningrise is very different from what Opeth has become lately, so they are good choices only if you dig the sort of Metal of say, Gothenburg Death.

Captain Quentin 06-23-2006 01:52 AM

well i do love my in flames and arch enemy......... :D

Isn't that on Morningrise tho

Deliverance?

TojesDolan 06-23-2006 03:07 AM

Yes it is.

Yeah, Deliverance seems like a good way to go. I dislike the vocals a lot, though. Very forced.

jpshortstuff 06-23-2006 05:59 AM

definatly if you prefer BWP go with Deliverence. i got BWP then Deliverence and they're my 2 fav. albums.

Stoo 06-23-2006 07:20 AM

The Deliverance vocals are excellent. Not forced at all... just alot eviler...

And to be honest... just buy all the albums! There will be something you like about each.

I spent ages on here figuring out which ones to buy, trying to see generally what the best albums are. But I ended up buying them all in no real order after the first 3. If they were in the shops I'd buy them. got Morningrise and My Arms, You're Hearse together for a very good price.

NP - When...mmm When.

Alex 06-23-2006 07:43 AM

in my opinion, the very best Opeth album is Blackwater Park. Although the others are all fan-****in-tastic

I think it's just the way they were recorded ie. very cheaply. But they're a lot more raspy, and they sound very different from the growling on the other albums. That's the main reason I like them.

Det_Nosnip 06-23-2006 09:08 AM

Plus Lopez tore it up on that record.

:(

I agree, BWP is their best

Captain Quentin 06-23-2006 08:37 PM

thanks for everyones help, i got damnation and so far its a kickass album :chug:

Alex 06-23-2006 08:52 PM

damnation is a superb album as is it's counterpart: Deliverance.

fuck i love Opeth

Moses 06-24-2006 12:35 AM

Deliverance is great.

Does anyone think of D+D not as a heavy and soft album but more like a regular album and an all soft album? That's how I see it anyway.

TojesDolan 06-24-2006 01:16 AM

Deliverance has a lot more punch and less acoustic riffs/parts than the past songs, considering especially the length of most songs.

And my problem with the vocals in Deliverance is that the growling feels like it was rush-recorded, and Mike's vocals are definitely not at their best.

I see it as different facets of the same expression. Damnation has some very heavy moments, but they're not expressed through growled vocals or distorted guitars...it's a different kind of heaviness. Deliverance is definitely one of the more aggressive albums to date, yet it also has its tender moments. *shrug*

Jude 06-24-2006 09:42 AM

Deliverance isn't all heavy, but it would have sucked if it were. Wreath is a boring song, to me, and I think the lack of acoutic interludes has something to do with it.

However Deliverance is by far the heaviest, in terms of heavy:soft ratio.

I'd agree here, though the acoustic/soft parts aren't as common as other albums, and are much gloomtastic-er.

UpperDecker 06-24-2006 02:06 PM

I think Deliverance has just about as much acoustic parts as their other albums. Maybe not as much but when they come up in the songs they're great. Such as the parts in Deliverance, A Fair Judgement, Master's Apprentices, For Absent Friends is all soft (not sure if its acoustic though), and that one little freak circus section in BTPISIO.

Jude 06-24-2006 02:24 PM

The soft parts in Deliverance are definitely less frequent and shorter than in other albums...the other two with the most heaviness are MAYH and Blackwater Park, but each of them has a significant acoustic part in every song at least. Meanwhile, Wreath has NOTHING soft except a few bars of acoustic playing, Deliverance only has the one soft section (walk with me etc), A Fair Judgement has its intro and the acoustic solo and the part after it, For Absent Friends is 2 minutes long, and then MA and BTPISIO each have a 2-3 minute soft section and the rest is heavy.

I think It would of been better if Deliverance and Damnation were released as a double disc set like planned.
