I got so pissed off when i saw that one simpsons episode when they go to England and they're riding in a hot air balloon and Homer says "there's Jimmy Page, the biggest thief of black american music in history." I can't stand when the writers express their own opinions through the characters.

Keep in mind, Jimmy Page wasn't exactly wrong for playing an unoriginal riff. What he did was wrong because he knew that it was unoriginal, but he did it anyway.

now thats not complety true, you cant judge bands just by the type of music they play, that is not what classic rock is about, i like many different types of music outside and around the area of classic rock. for example, there are a few punk bands that i like, such as the clash, the talkingheads, and the velvet underground (though they are also considered by many as classic rock)

Also if people didn't steal things from others we wouldn't have a lot of great things we do today, but the point is that usually in music when some 'steals' something from another musican, they will most likey make it better, well at least in classic rock bands.

Taking a melody is the same as taking a riff, taking a chord progression is different though. And you seemed to have conveniently forgotten to defend the part about Dylan doing covers and ripping off unfortunate folksmen. ;)

I believe it is, and he may own the rights to Yardbirds music from the when he was with him, but I'm really not sure.

Yea but think about all the blues songs they did. I Can't Quit You Baby, You Shook Me, and The Lemon Song all have riffs and lyrics from old blues songs. I think Babe I'm Gonna Leave You does too. (Most of their songs have old blues lyrics, which is the obvious part.) Personally, I don't think Page intended on stealing the riffs and marketing them as his own, but rather redoing them in his own songs and paying homage to his blues idols. I used to think he was arrogant and he did steal all that stuff, but he's a nice guy (or at least appears so in interviews and movie clips and stuff) and stealing riffs doesn't seem like something he'd do.

Because I remember that he had to buy the rights to the Yardbirds to use the name "The New Yardbirds" in Zeppelins early touring days.

True. Most of the great musicians that ever existed in this planet were black. In jazz we have Wes Montgomery and Miles Davis, if we take a look at the blues, we have B.B King and John Lee Hooker, in rock music Mr. Hendrix. ****, maybe that´s why I suck on guitar, :lol: , just kidding.

They had an interesting Pink Floyd reference a few days ago on the Simpsons. The Homerpalooza episode. I forgot who it was but he was trying to make a giant pig shoot out, and homer accidentally sets it off and the pig flies off and the guy exclaims "I got that from a Pink Floyd yardsale!"

You forgot about Charlie Parker in your Jazz part. Amazing musician, he played his sax so fast that some people thought he was screwing up, but later when the ability to slow down music happened, people listened to his music slowed down and found he was actually playing perfect notes, just really fast. Also the first time he heard something he'd be able to immediately repeat it

Oh and Yeah, Genesis is worth checking out, really good soothng band

Man, if we were to name all the great black jazz musicians that ever existed, it would take more than 820 pages to name them all :lol: ! And yeah, you´re right, Charlie Parker is a HUGE name in Jazz.
