I've been playing on and off for like eight years but I'm not in any way good at it. Like I know some barre chords and maybe like a seven chord.

Like 3 years, but I've never had any formal lessons or anything so I'm not very good.

I mostly just like improvising and tapping, if I create a riff that sounds good I tab it out in gp5, I've made made a makeshift song out of them

that and I pick out certain riffs in songs and learn them for fun

Do you play like technical stuff or keep it simple? I'm now pretty good at shred/tap, but still have to work on my sweeping. I'm now working on PtH - Fortress. Basically figuring out every song in the album one by one :p. Finished Bloodmeat and The Dissentience, but too lazy to start Sequoia Throne.

Well I improved my shredding by practicing Dream Theater - Erotomania. Download the GP5/Powertab tabs, go to the string skipping part (you can play the rest if you want :P) slow it down, then start increasing the tempo slowly. You'll get there :)
