I also agree with the aforementioned point about Tool being overwrought in terms of the meaning of everything they do. I think a lot of the songs are simpler than many here think. The lyrics are very good and meaningful to an extent, but they aren't brilliant.
In this world where words like awesome, brilliant, and outstanding are used on an everyday basis just to emphasize how great something is they kind of lose there meaning. The word awesome is hardly ever used to actually describe something that left people in awe and so on. My point is to say and use the real definition of brilliant: Marked by unusual and impressive intellectual acuteness; that kind of does describe most of Maynards lyrics I think, and is kind of accurate. Either way, I think that all these attempts to say that it isn't so good, or they aren't truly unique etc., is just us regulars in the thread trying to not be called fanboys. That's kinda lame, we all know we don't worship Maynard or herald them as the best band ever. That would be ignorant. But to say that Maynard's lyrics are unique or took some wit isn't. It's pretty easy to see that they are unique and often witty at times. Meh, that almost sounds offensive now that I read it, but I'm just trying to make a point. I don't mean any offense. |
I think Maynard is a great lyricist...but people take it too far, as we all know. It's fun to delve into the meanings of the songs, but lyrics shouldn't be taken as some almighty gospel of higher spirituality or being. They're lyrics to a rock song, and they are often cryptic, which is part of the fun.

But none of us do. We aren't "their fans". Some of "their fans" are complete idiots, but like I said I don't think the posters in this thread are the ones who need to be avoided. That comment about Tool being the first to criticize Satan was wrong, but I don't think it was meant that they were the first in history. I think he meant more like they are always willing to come out and do so. It was just worded wrong I think. |
Track 69
I love how they named it that cause the 6 and 9 are the same up you turn it and it goes on forever like they say in the song... life feeds on life feeds on life but I am confused on what the real meaning is. |
the funny thing about me is that i'm not a fanboy of tool. i am in this thread only cause of the ppl and the topics.
i would rather call me a CoB-fanboy or NIN-fanboy... even more DT-fanboy than tool. don't understand me wrong. i like tool, their music, everything... but i am not fanatic. |

It's actually really childish and immature (to be obsessed with the number, I mean. Not the act itself). That's what makes it so weird that Tool would do it, definitely no higher numerology behind it. |

Another shining example of Tool's brilliant sense of humor. |
69 has something to do with sex, not numbers
69 has something to do with sex, not numbers

That seems like a pretty vague connection, but I'd be willing to bet they just put it at track 69 for the obscurity and just because that number is so fuckin hilarious.
|
maybe... who knows?
|
i think a lot of things tool is making of fun... they are sitting there, are playing with numbers (like 69)... someone says... hey thats cool, we put it on the record... maynard asks: what about the meaning behind it... the others: **** it! who cares?
theres now this 69 on the record and ppl all over the world/forums are discussing the meaing, though it hasn't one :) thats the irony behind tool /****... sorry for the double-post |

Something like that ;) |
Yeah, I see what you mean, but I think they just wanted to have a "69" appear when you put it in your CD player.
|
Yeah, I see what you mean, but I think they just wanted to have a "69" appear when you put it in your CD player.
Haha, yeah I could see Tool doing that. They prolly just did it to make people wonder what the hell they mean.
|

cause it looks great 'in print'?! a lot of numbers are interesting and mysterious: 3,7,13,23,69,666,616 |

You know what though- This guy could be on to something. I mean, Tool perhaps wanted to think of sex, when really, the meaning was a tad deeper than that. :) Either way, I really like the guy's theory. Also, Disgustipated appears at different track numbers depending on the version, or edition of Undertow. It says exactly where it appears on the Tool FAQ, but since tdn is undergoing some sort of makeover(gomf finally) I won't be able to tell you. :( I do recall reading track 10,69, and 100, though, but don't quote me on this. |
But none of us do. We aren't "their fans". Some of "their fans" are complete idiots, but like I said I don't think the posters in this thread are the ones who need to be avoided.
y do you say that? |
Tool has sort of a magic realism type of humor. They'll say or do something ridiculous in a totally dead-pan manner. Well, I don't know about "deadpan" but they try to present the ridiculous in a serious way, if you catch me.
|
I think I get what you mean. They can say anything they want, and there will always be someone who dissects the hell out of what they do or say until they reach some kind of extremely complex and deep meaning. Something that Tool may or may not have intended to do in the first place.
|
I think it's ironic that a band which stresses keeping an open mind can have some of the most narrow-minded fans imaginable. How could they boo bands like Fantomas and Meshuggah just because they're opening for Tool and taking away their precious Tool time (with Tim Taylor, heh)? That's not right.
|
I'm sure Tool have kicked themselves more than once for becoming so mainstream. They're "Tool" that they have used to get their message across to their fans has essentially backfired, mainly because of what you said, Ian.
|
I have not been listening to tool lately, Im starting to find them boring :-/
Thats why I hardly come in here anymore. |
Im starting to find them boring :-/
My friend got one of those. It is so freaking small. I knew they were smaller than Ipod minis, but..It's like the size of a credit card.

I think when the new tool DVD comes out i might get excited, but till then... /Puts Aenima to the back of cd shelf |
Faith, we me and the other guitarist played tonight to polish some things up (we only had an hour and half... but it was still pretty good for such a short time). Were getting together again on Sunday, and we should have a decent recording for you. We were thinking recording a demo of it, get you to write/record drums, send it back to us then we'll rerecord over it. Otherwise it may be a bit sloppy at some parts.

i'm watching tool live.. they r boring. its just amazing that these was happening 10 years ago when i was about 8 years old?
|
Why did noone point out the fact that; "life feeds on life" is just a "clever" way of talking about doing the 69, on the last page?
|
i'm watching tool live.. they r boring. its just amazing that these was happening 10 years ago when i was about 8 years old?
They're far from boring live, but to each their own. It's not that amazing to be honest, either. How about some old Iron Maiden live shows, from BEFORE you were born? Or many other bands. I recommend Lateralus era live shows over any others, Ænima era shows are prtety cool too, but they're just getting better and better.
Why did noone point out the fact that; "life feeds on life" is just a "clever" way of talking about doing the 69, on the last page?
I did mention that last time this was brought up. No one seemed to want to mention it then either. It's quite funny, but obviously totally immature, Tool kinda grew up a lot with Lateralus. |
i see two different mynards when i watch him perform in apc and tool.. in Apc he is shy or something, he hides hes face with his hair and sometimes faces his back to the audience and sings to himself in the corner most of the time. however with all the lighting and effects its one of the best live performances ive seen.
|
Exactly how I feel about Maynard. It's like he's two people in one. Weird, eh?
