Hello people

Gaslight, I got to about 40 hours, but then I went to bed because it was getting late and I need to actually do things today.

ocdrumandbass 10-23-2004 05:02 AM

Wow, nice effort.

Got bored of being awake?

Wintermute 10-23-2004 05:04 AM

I wasn't even tired, I just knew that today I have to walk into Ponty and talk to the banks and so on, so I'd be better being well rested!
Are you like, making a new kind of mosquito?

Imagine if they were the size of a truck and killed people.
I'm looking at their immune reactions in order to genetically manipulate a population of wild mosquitoes so that they can't carry malaria, or at least reduce the numbers that can.

If someone wants to make them the size of a truck, that would make my life a million times easier. Reason 1, larger than microscopic bead, reason 2 harder to accidentally kill.

gaslight 10-23-2004 05:55 AM

That's pretty awesome, you could theoretically discover how to remove malaria from circulation?

xxxwookie 10-23-2004 06:35 AM
That's pretty awesome, you could theoretically discover how to remove malaria from circulation?
If only it were that simple. Basically the reason that some mosquitoes carry malaria is because they have a defective gene which makes them incapable of mounting an immune response to them. My study is looking at trying to work out why the population is so high in this defective gene and I suspect it's because the defective gene allows them to reproduce more succesfully.

gaslight 10-23-2004 06:40 AM

Ah... there's always one thing I've wondered about mosquitoes.

Is there any positive thing that comes from their existence?

PaulSimonon 10-23-2004 06:41 AM

Sounds like a quandry; you want to get rid of the malaria, but you don't want to lower the population, and the very gene that allows them to carry malaria is also somewhat important in the mosquito's reproduction, if I inferred correctly.
Ah... there's always one thing I've wondered about mosquitoes.

They serve as food for other more important insects, I don't know if that's it but now jellyfish, I've looked but I can't find a purpose to their existance.

gaslight 10-23-2004 06:51 AM

Yeah but like, wouldn't it only matter if those insects fed exclusively on mosquitoes?

Wintermute 10-23-2004 07:29 AM

^^^
No, even if they only ate the occasional mosquito, not being able to would mean that they have to eat more of other insects, so that other species's numbers fall, things they eat's numbers rise, and so on and so on.

gaslight 10-23-2004 07:31 AM

Ahh... dang. Stuck with mosquitoes then.

Wintermute 10-23-2004 07:32 AM

Does anything eat wasps?

PaulSimonon 10-23-2004 07:32 AM

Me!

gaslight 10-23-2004 07:34 AM

I suppose ants might eat dead wasps.

Wintermute 10-23-2004 07:44 AM

mmm, but ants have so wide a food base (ie - anything) that that probably doesn't matter.

reidster90 10-23-2004 08:12 AM

ants eat humans silly, but only if they are mexican.
they put tobasco sauce on white guys...

risbo 10-23-2004 08:28 AM

Hey gaslight, you like ibanez. My friend wants to start bass and he's really happy with his ibanez guitar. Do you know any good basses for under 600$?

gaslight 10-23-2004 08:32 AM

What currency? Ibanez GSR200 should do just fine, that's the one I started with.

risbo 10-23-2004 08:40 AM

Oh right, it's canadian dollars. I think the GSR200 will do fine. Thank yah.:thumb:

gaslight 10-23-2004 08:42 AM

Ah neat, 'cause it's $595 Australian so it should be cheaper over there.

No worries :thumb:.
