I currently have about 3 gigs of music I'm not that all that familliar with, but that's because my friends gave it to me to listen to. I gave them about 10 gigs.
Whenever I download a new batch of stuff, it goes on Amarok's list of newly inputted albums. I listen to all of them on the list. All together I have more than 30,000 songs, a very good portion to I've listened to. At the very least I've heard all of the albums I own, for some not the entirety of them but I will eventually.

You're just seeing a discrepancy between your listening habits, in which you listen to the same 50 albums repeatedly while at the same time seeing everyone else as having the same listening habits as you, but only we're just a bunch of nerds that like to download obscure stuff. Not true. The only way you develop a wide range of taste is by taking a chance and downloading something you don't know for sure that you'll like immediately. On first listen they may seem inaccessible, but you develop skills and learn more about the music in order to appreciate it. That is how you get from listening to the same bunch of albums repeatedly, to going from 80's stoner metal to 50's free form jazz and right around to modern electronica.

The objective isn't to become a large bundle of sticks nerd on the internet with a bigger e peen, it is driven by risk taking and a love for music in general. Of course all of this requires an open mind and lots of free time, which are the hallmarks of becoming a nerd. I realy don't think anyone cares about that label since we all have thousands of posts on internet forums.

I'm just addressing a theme that seems to run in this forum. The fact that our mod doesn't have the same or wide range of tastes as the main users do, and looks down at us for "hoarding".

I'm in an argumentative mood today.
fart

Anxious 02-16-2008 04:21 PM

Yeah Shellac and bands like them are cool

asdf 02-16-2008 05:16 PM

Hey, alt and indie, hey! Calm down! Now let's all try and remain mature here.

Hows about YDload starts a thread to list albums or songs that pertain to some specific thing about them where likely the Jesus Lizard can be listed, hmm?

Anxious 02-16-2008 05:24 PM

Capital idea!

Neoteric 02-16-2008 05:27 PM

i find it kinda cute that ydload only really listens to five or so bands

i do that all the time though (esp. the thread about meaningless songs, you could take that to mean...)

but anxious, if you do not do the things i complain about then you do not need to reply. i wish alex still posted cause thats exactly what he did
i find it kinda cute that ydload only really listens to five or so bands
superpeer 02-16-2008 05:28 PM

For the basslines. He can play them.

Neoteric 02-16-2008 05:31 PM

is it sad i actually had to pick up a guitar to find out what that was

and yah, Zappa was a bro.

superpeer 02-16-2008 05:38 PM

idk what that is =(

I should demod that nub actually

Anxious 02-16-2008 05:38 PM

He hated everything.

YDload 02-16-2008 05:41 PM

Jelle's was Smells Like Teen Spirit. mine was spelling out "boobies" with number like on a calculator

Neoteric 02-16-2008 05:44 PM
He hated everything.
Zappa has 141 5/5 ratings on RYM.

@YDload: yeah, i had to check what Jelle's was.

superpeer 02-16-2008 05:44 PM

Oh, I actually tried playing it on a guitar. :upset:

Dei and NPC hate everything.

Neoteric 02-16-2008 05:48 PM

i can only name two things Dei listens to, seriously what the hell does that guy like

superpeer 02-16-2008 05:49 PM

He always lists a ton of bands, but I don't know any of them. He's too indie for me.

Anxious 02-16-2008 05:51 PM

RYM blows.

asdf 02-16-2008 05:54 PM

I use my RYM account almost exclusively to keep track of concerts I go to.

Anxious 02-16-2008 05:56 PM

I depend on last.fm for that. With the amount of music I have, RYM is just a colossal waste of time. I also gain nothing in ways of finding new music that I couldn't do with last.fm.

Neoteric 02-16-2008 05:57 PM

I like RYM, mostly because I'm a fag that likes rating what they listen to.

asdf 02-16-2008 05:57 PM

I'm going to a concert tonight. Local band. It's going to be an overly-indie dance party.
