Only Machine Gun

There is so much anti-Slowdiving on this forum. I don't get it.

Dagger, Machine Gun, When the Sun Hits, Some Velvet Morning, Souvlaki Space Station, and Allison are my favorite tracks. the rest are fillers.

i think if they had gotten rid of all those fillers and replaced them with songs of that quality, then this album could easily beat MBV.
but unfortunately that is not the case. and also, MBV did it first, so Slowdive owes them credit.

i still heart them though. very very very very much.

Bukowski 05-13-2006 02:50 PM

I agree that theres some filler. It's just that some of the best songs on this album are better than anything by MBV. In my opinion at least.

Right now, i'm listening to Bug by Dinosaur Jr. I'm seeing them wednesday, yay!

lucky! you seen them before?
i saw them in August. amazing show. they played a lot of stuff off Bug and You're Living All Over Me.

the only problem was that they seemed very disconnected from the audience. but it was no big deal.

and there are few things as good as hearing Freak Scene and In a Jar live.

Bukowski 05-13-2006 03:02 PM

yeah, i also saw them last August. It was a great show, and there was thankfully alot of songs from the early albums. I'm not the biggest fan of what they did after Green Mind.

It's a great way to end a day when I have a damn physics exam.

New York Dolls - New York Dolls

Today is one of those days when I need some brainless campy glam rock.
It's so sugary, it could make a hummingbird gag. But some songs are pretty catchy, even if they are disposable. Having never seen them on TV, I'd really think they'd be better live than on album really. Or at least nice to look at.
They were, I suppose. They were in a club or something though, and the sound didn't seem very good.

Anyway, I've got enough stuff to check out that's actually from the 60s already.
I gave this a spin this afternoon before returning to my steady diet of late-80s hip hop.
I hope that Erik B. and Rakim's Paid in Full is part of that diet, because that's what I've been diggin' for the past few days.

myiaa 05-13-2006 05:17 PM

Why?

I can't decide if I like them or not. I don't think I will have an opinion either way. They are OK to listen to.

br3ad_man 05-13-2006 06:06 PM

I feel the same.

"If they got rid of the songs that suck, and put in good ones it'd be a great album"

Isn't that the case with every album ever made.

if At the Drive-In took out the sub-par songs from all of their albums, they would have about a seven song EP

oh wait they already did that! it was called "Vaya" and it's awesome

however, i was implying that those slowdive songs are better than the average band's songs, IMO.

so if every band took THEIR best songs on a CD and replaced all the fillers with songs of equal quality, it'd still leave the decision of which band had better songs up to the listener.

Otherside 05-13-2006 07:29 PM

I've been really into Illinoise latley, much more than I was when I first got the cd. I can't really explain what I love about it, it's just a great album.

Scuba_Steve 05-13-2006 07:33 PM

I've been listening to Gnarls Barkley alot, and I like the album more everytime I listen to it.

I feel another residents phase coming on. My friend wants me to loan her some good albums, and just so I know I'm loaning the right ones, I've been listening to some.

Wow. I had only listened to George and James once or twice before. Even though I don't listen to Gershwin or James Brown, the album is so great. The residents take on these two artists is very well done. It's a very strong album. I've listened to it twice today.

sr800bkBassist 05-13-2006 09:54 PM

anybody here dig The Willowz?

There are a couple of albums for $10 at the store that I want. Tweez by Slint and the self titled Smiths album. I can't buy them though, because I have to pay for a Splendour ticket. What a shame.

Anyway, I've been digging Either/Or. It's so soothing.

Glitterati 05-14-2006 11:40 AM

Cocteau Twins - Treasure - First listen of this. It's relaxing if not a little weird.

You know, normally you're supposed to have a temporary obsession right after you see a band, but it's infecting me around 2 months after the fact.
