Everythings better when you're just letting it flow. Same goes with music. I write best when I'm not thinking about writing anything worth while. It just all the sudden...BAM! Here! Something cool!
All my music is in my head fully orchestrated and beautiful. The challenge is writing it out like it sounds in my head. I have yet to do that well :( |
I'm just getting back into writing music.

Holy crap, that's what happens with me. |
I've been coming up with a lot of cool riffs lately becuase I haven't learned a song in a while. What I like to do now is just play.
Edit: about the part of having music in your head, and not being able to write it, I have that too. I can't count the number of awsome songs that have popped into my head, but haven't made it out. |

Same here. Maybe if I actually studied how to write music... |
Vince- Yup, same thing happens to me. I can hear this beautiful riff in my head, floating away, all nice and scaly. Then I sit down and try to play it and it comes out sounding terrible. :-/
Holy crap, that's what happens with me.
The worst part is being able to hear songs sometimes, and know how the solo will sound before it starts. Like being able to predict each note and duration as it comes...it's kinda lame...because I still can't write them out myself. |

I can actually hear the entire song play out in my head (with drums, bass, harmonica/organs/pianos/etc.) but it literally because impossible to write because I don't know most of those instruments. |
Same here. Maybe if I actually studied how to write music...
Studying is unneccesary. Download Finale Notebook for free and learn by doing. It becomes quite easy since you have MIDI playback for the notes you type in. It's how I program my drums for songs.
The worst part is being able to hear songs sometimes, and know how the solo will sound before it starts. I try to write it down but I don't know time signature or note durations or anything, and playing it on guitar doesn't work. |
Somtimes I come up with awesome guitar solos to songs that don't have solos.
When I come up with stuff in my head, i convince my self it sucks so i dont have to remember it. I used to come up with riffs all the time, and every time id stuggle to write them down wherever i could, and I'd have tabs drawn all over my homework and shit. |

That's why I've been picking up one new instrument per year since I started :) Cain: Just about any tab program works. Finale is better if you know music theory, otherwise I recommend tabit or powertab. |
My best riffs and melodies always come to me when I'm nowhere near any instrument.

I actually do that on guitar. I'll be listening to music, and I'll pic up my guitar, find the key, and start improvising. I love the improvise solos; planed out solos aren't nearly as fun. |
I play guitar and harmonica and rudimentary piano, but that's it :(
I also like to joke about how I could play bass easily because it's like "playing guitar, but with less talent" to piss my gf off  |

Cain: Just about any tab program works. Theory does help, though. |

then she blocked me, lol.
 God, it's great having MX friends own people from my old town. |

I never bother learning solos to songs because I don't have the focus to learn what I could improv over. That's why i love drums. |
Yeah, one day during chemistry class, I had this brilliant idea, so I transcribed it. Then my idiot bitchface chem teacher took it away and I never got it back form her. :(

I thought I'd have a leg up, since I play with my fingers anyway, but no. Picked the low E a few times and my index finger got all red and sore right away. :-/ |
I play bass exactly how I play guitar. Honestly, when I pic up a bass, I do a lot of the exact same stuff as I do on guitar. Even strumming sometimes .

I've run a bass through a guitar amp with effects and just played it like I do with my guitar.

That's terrible. I use pick on guitar and fingers on bass. My brother is way better at bass than me though. |

I've got fairly strong fingers, so I don't think it would be that much of a problem anyway. |

Don't bash it till you've tried it. My fingers get very sore from all the rubbing. |
I use a pick when I play bass when I'm hanging out at a music store. If I can't find a pick, I just slap. I can't use my fingers with a crap. :-/ Usually, I play loads of RATM songs on bass. Tim Bob owns..
|
That's terrible.

I've tried my hand at bass. Not my thing.
I'm considering sneaking out of my house for the first time tonight. |
Actually tabit does have intervals more or less. I like that program a lot, it's what I use.
My roommate uses it too. His songs are listed under aninnerglow, check them out. They're very poetry set to music, emo-type affairs. Not in the musical style of course but the mindset. He's generally got a good ear, and I've even written some layers for a few of his songs. |

I'm not belittling it, I'm making a prediction. Learning the nuances of the instrument will be tough, but physically I think I may be able to take it. |
