Yes my friend, yes you are. I get my account back tommorow. I also get my new computer tommorow.

NJMetalMeister 07-10-2005 08:14 AM

Speaking of new computers, i cant wait to get back to the states so i can build my new beastly machine. ;)

Whats the specs going to be, nubb?

NJMetalMeister 07-10-2005 08:20 AM

Not totally sure yet, things that are for certain:

2 GB ram (minimum, depending on the price i can get on ram i may buy more)
AMD 64 of some sort
most likely MSI motherboard, as they have worked very well in the past for me
PCI express 16 GeForce 6800GT
unsure on soundcard, been using Creative cards in the past, might try for something new, but definitely 7.1 capabilities

Eventually I will dual processor it, once i get a job settled and what not, so it will be a beast and a half to say the least

Arucard 07-10-2005 08:23 AM

I wouldn't go over 2 GB of RAM, it ends up nuking your system and mainly slows it down, and wastes money. No SLI graphics? What about one of the new Dual Core processers?

NJMetalMeister 07-10-2005 08:26 AM

ah see while the dual core would be very nice, money is a factor and a half. While from newegg.com i can get an AMD 64 for a lot less than a dual core, and as long as i get a motherboard that is capable of dual processors, then it doesnt really matter.

As far as over the 2gb of ram thing, as long as you set anything over the 2gb as extra cache for quick reference, it will not nuke your system and slow it down, in fact it speeds it up, but that is not necessarily the easiest thing to do in the world.

However I did make my first purchase towards the machine, i was able to find a 19" LCD for $200, same one a friend of mine bought 2 months ago for 650, and its a fantastic monitor he claims, and wall mountable, so its win win really.

probably have a DVD burner sent home soon too, since they are so cheap now anyway, and i can throw it in my current machine until i have all the parts for the new one, seeing as i do not have a DVD burner at all yet.

Edit: i forgot to add, that depending on how much money i am getting whever i work during the semester, i may do something crazy like get a water cooling system as well, but ill have to see.

Arucard 07-10-2005 08:30 AM

Cool. The computer im getting is dirt cheap, as im getting it from my local LAN games café thats shutting down. For £350 i get :

3000+ AMD
1 Gig Ram
One of those cool cases with the lights and stuff.
256mb GeForce FX5700 LE (Not very good, but with all the money im saving i expect to get one of the newer Radeon 512mb)
80Gig HD
Windows XP
Office 2004
17" CRT Monitor (selling straight away to some idiot, then just buying a nice TFT).

I think thats pretty good for 350.

Well considering i have no idea what the prices for computer parts are like in the UK, converted to dollars its still a pretty good deal. Breaking it down you look at it like this:

Starting: $700 (roughly)

3000+ AMD XP: $120
1gb RAM (Depending on speed though): $80
Case with window + lights: $80
GeForce card: $130 (although i wouldnt switch to ATI, they have major issues with certain types of graphic rendering, but thats just my opinion)
Hard Drive: $60
17" monitor: $50

Which is $520 without any software or anything, not including motherboard price, or anything like that, so yeah you are getting off with a pretty good deal. Hard drive is a bit low in size for my tastes, i mean back at home I had a 160 gb hard drive and filled it up in about 2 months time. Here i have a 60, and its rough keeping my crap limited., but not shabby at all.

Arucard 07-10-2005 08:42 AM

Yes, and parts are more expensive over here. Sapphire Radeon x800 XT = £400.

NJMetalMeister 07-10-2005 08:44 AM

yikes. I mean i guess it isnt so bad if you already have an income based in pounds and what not, but if you were in a country on the dollar or the euro for example and then moved to the UK, before you had a steady pound based income, you would be completely destroyed monitarily if you wanted computer stuff. I could not imagine paying $800 for the Sapphire Radeon, or any computer part for that matter.

Arucard 07-10-2005 08:46 AM

Yeh, the new Dual Core processers are estimated at over £500! Thats insane! Do you know if any older (about a year old) motherboards would support 64bit AMD?

NJMetalMeister 07-10-2005 08:47 AM

Generally, AMD 64 processors are a different socket size than the regular AMD XP processors, so usually no. However some motherboards that were released around the same time as the AMD64 may very well have been dual compatible. If you could give me a motherboard make and model number i could probably look it up easily enough.

Arucard 07-10-2005 08:53 AM

Ok, i shall tell you tommorow. I intend to upgrade the Motherboard myself eventually, but at the minute 3000+ plus is fine, as i have a CPU ultra-coolant system (cost me 130 :/), which helps the overclocking process.

Stoic 07-10-2005 10:26 AM

****, are we ages back or what?! 1G RAM?!
This is what I'm thinking to get for 730euros

Intel Pentium 4 3.2GHz/800 Prescott
MS Windows XP Home GR
512MB RAM
Sound On board 5.1 support
HD 80GB 7200 rpm SATA
VGA FX 5200 128MB DDR + TV-OUT
Modem 56K V.92
DVD-RW 8x24x40
FDD 1.44
Ethernet 10/100 On board
Microsoft Internet Keyboard
Microsoft Optical Mouse
Ports: 1xSerial, 1xParallel, 4xUSB 2.0

How does it look?

Arucard 07-10-2005 10:30 AM

That sounds alright for that amount of money. I am upgrading my HD to a 10,000 rpm one though, even with the measly capacity.

But yeh, thats cool.

Stoic 07-10-2005 10:36 AM

Well, I just want a reliable and stable (dont have to reset it twice a day, arggg!) machine that will allow me to enjoy my recently activated broadhand connection. Besides the internet, I really dont do a lot on my PC. What do you usually do?

Arucard 07-10-2005 10:42 AM

I am such a geek, i mod my existing computer with coolant systems/fans/case acceseries etc. Its something i don't usually talk about, but i have a subscription to 'Gigahz' magazine. Its pretty new, and is basically all about super-high end computers and components.

I play alot of online games too, in amatuer leagues, so i need a relialbe and fast system.

Im only 16, but im doing History, English Literature, Computer Physics and Physics at A Level. I have quite alot of career path options, but i am pretty sure it will either be one of these three :

Some kind of critic/review writer. As you probably know, i already review cd's/mangas.
A war historian. I have written several papers (non-related to school) about Nazi Germany and Stalins Russia.
A computer technician of some kind.

I don't mind any of them. For me, if i get into music, it happens.

heh, replace 5 minutes with 30 and this is me. But this only happens with newer technology action games, especially shooters or whatever they are called.

Multiplayer is teh secks. I swear, once you play multiplayer on that game, you will be hooked forever...its nuts.

Josh 07-10-2005 11:41 AM

i play Multiplayer on DoD at the moment, i haven't had it long so i'm not that good. i used to play Call of Duty online all the time, but uninstalled it to save space.
i need to get a laptop soon, in about 6 months i'm 18 and inherit a load of gas shares so i'll be able to sell them for about £800. i need a laptop for coursework and to last me through Uni, i won't be playing many games on it so it shouldn't cost too much.

my current pc (well, its the whole family's) has 512mb RAM, 1.1GHz processor, 60gb hard drive and 64mb nvidia geforce 2 (i think) graphics card - it's not the best, but it's coming up to being 2 years old.

Not bad, the only thing thats shady is onboard sound, which can cause system strain when you for example try to play a game and listen to mp3s. However if you dont plan on any gaming, then it should be fine

Jom 07-10-2005 11:58 AM

For anti-virus: AVG Free from http://www.grisoft.com/

For adware: Ad-Aware 6.0 or SE

For spyware: Spybot: Search and Destroy

You can find all three from download.com, I'd imagine.
