Wow, I was really digging that Dream Theater song you have in your profile...but then it just got really bad. Man, it irritates me that Dream Theater squash the potential to make great music just for the sake of virtuosity. It was really cool when it was a simple build up, and then they go into the complex, intricate guitar parts and it sounds like complete junk.

....then don't listen to much of anything else. If you think they're acting virtuostic there, then you'll really despise all their other stuff.

I haven't heard that song before, it's awesome IMO. What album is it on?

I have to agree with you on some of your arguments here. Im also not definatly bashing DT here! (I own 3 of their dvds! ).

But to me it also sounds as if they sometimes throw away what acould have been great. And sometimes in their songs its just random melody afther melody, and sometimes just random keyboard-guitar playing.

I dunno if this made sence to anyone. Just my opinion anyway. :)

Will somebody please tell this kid that the beginning to Schism is all bass?! I swear he will die for his mistakes

Nah that's okay. I like Tool but I haven't posted in this thread before, ain't that strange? Parabol/Parabola is as good as it gets.

YouGottaBeCrazy 09-25-2005 06:57 PM

Well, that review sucks anyway. I mean, come on, he called Parabol filler. However, the beginning of Schism is not all bass. The chords hit in the beginning is a combination of bass and guitar chords. The next part is all bass though. Is that what you meant? Oh, and yes, Parabol/Parabola is great. The way they are connected, the melodic singing, the awesome riffage, it just all comes together so well. I find Parabola to be one of the heaviest songs on the album musically, but the beautiful singing that Maynard does really makes a nice contrast to it, and it ends up somewhere in the middle in terms of heaviness because of it. Anyone else agree?

Hmm, upon closer listening, I guess there is a bit of guitar in the very beginning. But the reviewer is still wrong because he seems to think that's ALL the intro is. He somehow interpreted the faint guitar and rich bass double-stops are "extremely beautiful and melodic guitar." I think that does a bit of disservice to Mr. Chancellor. I bet he thinks the bridge of Parabola is also guitar when it's high-register bass melodies with intermittent guitar chords! Grr.

Okay, yeah, I see what you're saying now. Yeah, that reviewer sucks

Darkness 09-25-2005 07:15 PM

Is that the guy who said Chester from LP is better then Maynard?

Huber 09-25-2005 07:26 PM

Yeah. He aint too bright.

YouGottaBeCrazy 09-25-2005 07:38 PM

He also called Disposition filler :upset:

I hear you, man.

Sleeper 09-25-2005 09:17 PM

I'm starting to record the bass for the second Lateralus cover on Soundclick, I prolly wont have it ready till monday or tuesday.

BlindWriting 09-25-2005 09:19 PM

It really wasn't that bad of a review.

Yeah, it suffers from the unprofessionalism that most track-by-track reviews hold, and his English isn't great. I agree, Parabol and Disposition are NOT fillers, and Chester Bennington is not a better singer than Maynard. But all in all it's nothing to get your panties in a bundle over.

Dr. Jake Destructo 09-25-2005 09:30 PM

Someone should get Med to delete that. I mean, 2 reviews is enough, 3 is a bit overkill, and 4 is just kind of ghey.

Darkness 09-25-2005 09:31 PM

Yeah, lets vote on the best ones. :D

mudvayne420 09-26-2005 12:42 PM

about the Alternative track listing for lateralus, i wanted to know, what you guys think about THE one with that aiden guy. i tried it and i get what he means by that but thats just me.

Kage 09-26-2005 12:48 PM

I think Triad is the only song that goes on too long. Reflection is amazing, and Disposition is just as good.

Dried Muffin Remnants 09-26-2005 12:49 PM

I don't see why we needed any more than one review. I remember seeing sputnik before I came onto MX and completely agreed with much of what bartender wrote. His review is the best by far.

YouGottaBeCrazy 09-26-2005 12:51 PM
That's become one of my favourite songs on the album. Reflection and Triad go on a bit too long for me but I've never got bored of Disposition.
See, I wouldn't say Reflection goes on for too long because when I'm done listening to it, I feel very satisfied. However, I do think that the verse doesn't come soon enough. That's the only complaint I have with the song. If I'm in the mood to just relax and listen and not really pay close attention to the music, then I have no problem with it. Yet, if I'm riding in a car, and I want to get to my favorite parts of the song, I feel everything pre-verse could have been shortened by about 8 bars. Or maybe they're should have been more sound effects.

Has any new information been posted on Tool's new album? A release date, leaks, anything?

I got the sudden urge to go see Tool live last night...I listened to Lateralus for the first time in a year, and it got me back into Tool.
