The In Your Face lyrics don't seem punk to me either.

IheartSP 03-17-2006 06:33 PM

They seem extremely punk to me, the entire goal is to say I'm rebelling and you can't control me, that is one of the most punk concepts there is.

Shadows 03-17-2006 06:35 PM

Punk to me would be "fuck the goverment, anarchy is the way to go". Besides, metal is about the music. Alexi says himself that he's a terrible lyricist, and I certainly don't listen to them because I like his lyrics. As long as the music stays metal, which it is, they'll be a metal band.

First metal band - Black Sabbath (to my knowledge). Debut hit North America in 1970, a few years earlier back in jolly ole' England. If Warpigs isn't a song about rebellion (against the government, too), then I'll be damned. Looks like punk was influenced by metal, not the other way around.

Rebellion and a general distaste for mainstream society is one of the core values in metal (and punk). However, metal introduced it first, and with much more musical prowess, to boot.

IheartSP 03-17-2006 06:36 PM

Not all punk is political you know.

It's not all about the lyrics either it's about the attitude, and Alexi has the same attitude with his music. He's always all like well this is what we make and were going to do it, it used to be much more about focusing on composition and melody, it was much more in touch with the classical roots.

Apocalyptic Raids 03-17-2006 06:37 PM
The Arsis lyrics were very metal and many people will tell you those Bodom lyrics are certainly not even close.
You seem to have this idea that Metal lyrics have to talk about fantasy, or at least talk about the theme in a fantasy style.

I don't think all the genres of metal have a common lyrical style. It differs alot.

I think we've had this discussion before, Sabbath was the first band to introduce metal but they werent the first 100% metal band, they were as much rock as they were metal. I think Maiden was the first band to be truley metal.

Shadows 03-17-2006 06:39 PM

Sabbath sounds more metal to me than Maiden.

Iron Maiden - Run To The Hills

That's a song that gives a big, happy middle finger to the American government for exploiting and inditing Native American Indians. More rebellion against the government there.

I have three words for you:

JUDAS FUCKING PRIEST.

IheartSP 03-17-2006 06:40 PM

It's hard for anything to be "more metal than Maiden" seeing as they are, well cmon man it's frickin Maiden! I can see a lot of songs being as metal as Maiden, but Sweet Leaf, Fairies Where Boots, Paranoid, those are definately not as metal as Maiden.

I'm not familiar with anything before British Steel

Jacob Run to the Hills is also about 17th century Englishmen and Indians lol.

To me, Maiden is very far from the definition of metal that people make them out to be.

Well you should be, because Maiden owe everything to what Judas Priest did before British Steel.

IheartSP 03-17-2006 06:43 PM

I forgot your not a Maiden fan, I guess you'd have to be to understand the greatness of Maiden. I'm a pretty strong athiest and if I was to take up religion it'd be worshipping them.

AR I think I've heard the Ripper which is indeed a very metal song.

I'm Charming 03-17-2006 07:08 PM

IHeartSP has been getting owned over the last 3 pages.

That's all I have to say.

Vice versa for Judas Preist.

This might have been posted earlier, but the AYDY? vid is on Scythes of Bodom... it's very disapointing.

Lil’ Bloodred Ridin’ Hood 03-17-2006 09:38 PM

it sucks

I'm Charming 03-17-2006 10:07 PM

I can't describe how sick that video made me.

What the fuck happened? Oh wait. Trying to appease americans.

Nothing in that video had jack shit to do with the song even.

Shattered_Future 03-17-2006 10:19 PM

Going back to Priest, they were around before Maiden, and you can hear some of their sound in Maiden.

Priest > Maiden FTW

blue3 03-18-2006 12:08 AM

I like Maiden more.

Shadows 03-18-2006 12:11 AM

I really liked the video. The shots of the band playing were awesome.

AA-12 03-18-2006 12:16 AM

Seriously, I just watched the video. It's awesome. What's up with people?

Shadows 03-18-2006 12:17 AM

I have no idea. Suddenly everyone thinks they know exactly what's going through their minds. The thing is hardly different from any of their other videos anyway.

Silenius 03-18-2006 12:27 AM

Fuck Priest, long live Maiden. :p

Steve Harris is the man.
