I going to this Pink Floyd tribute band later today.. I hope they're decent.

Riva 05-17-2006 04:49 PM

What's their name? The two I've seen have been amazing.

robo2448 05-17-2006 04:54 PM

I'm seeing The Machine in 2 weeks. Riva, have you seen them? I know someone here has and said they were great.

edit- I'm digging the new avatar Riva:thumb:

What's the album right above the Final Cut, to the right of Meddle? That's the only one I don't recognize.

MidnightRider 05-17-2006 08:27 PM

The Wall Live At Berlin is really cool, even without Dave, Rick, and Nick. I got it the other day and didn't really know what to expect, I was really impressed. I think my favorite part was the Sax solo in ABITWPt.1.

Nice avy, Riva.

NP: Where We Start (I think this is by far my favorite song off On An Island at the moment.)

Not me. I think it was Ethan (DuesExMachine) who saw them, if memory serves me.

And that is the cover for Psychadelic Sessions, which I have on tape.

Yeah, it is suprisingly good, isn't it.

BigTrav415 05-17-2006 09:42 PM

Is that album under the WYWH an alternate WYWH cover or a bootleg of some sort? If you'd give me a bigger avatar I could totally make something original PF-related for ym avvy ;)

Riva 05-17-2006 09:43 PM

That's The Early Singles. And I can't give out big avatars anymore, unless that person has one an official competition.

BigTrav415 05-17-2006 10:18 PM

:sigh: How about you make a competition called "Biggest Pink Floyd Fan besides Riva"? I'd totally pwn, especially if it was trivia.

blue3 05-17-2006 11:25 PM
What's their name? The two I've seen have been amazing.
Pink Floyd Experience. They were good. This giant flying inflatable pig came out of no where and most of the crowd was staring at that the entire time instead of the band, haha.

Leper 05-17-2006 11:33 PM

I really want one of the Pink Floyd tribute bands to come here, seeing as how I doubt Dave or Roger ever will.:(

Riva 05-18-2006 02:08 AM

Nice. Very nice. They did the same thing when I saw them. Beyond The Darkside had a giant pig that swung from the rafters into a hammer.

Whale and Wasp 05-18-2006 02:49 PM

i love your avatar, riva

Riva 05-18-2006 05:02 PM

Thankyou.

So, I saw a Pink Floyd compilation CD that featured a song with Barrett, Lennon and Yoko Ono. I must admit it piqued my interest. I'm trying to find a copy of it on Ebay and Soulseek, but no luck so far.

BigTrav415 05-18-2006 07:24 PM

My dad can be a real enigma sometimes. The only Pink Floyd he had was DSotM, although I know he listened to some of their other stuff, but somehow he knew about the inflatable pig they sometimes used at their shows. He was talking to me (before I'd heard anything but DSotM), and said "I think on one of their album covers they had a pig, and in their live shows they'd have an inflatable one." How did he know that? I'm almost definitely positive he never went to a show, he definitely would have told me about it by now.

Where's that PF Trivia contest, Riva?

robo2448 05-18-2006 07:30 PM
Oh ha I have that. Only on mp3 though. Gilmour/kingofdudes uploaded it a while back. It's good. I'd never seen the cover art though.

Neither of my parents were Floyd fans. I don't know if they disliked them, but I know my mom found them boring and I kind of get the impression that my dad never really listened to them.

Lunch 05-18-2006 07:31 PM

My dad liked their early stuff, but lost interest after a couple years. Part of it had to do with him just growing up into the real world too, instead of just being a teenager/college kid collecting albums. It's sad to think about, really.

BurningSky 05-18-2006 07:31 PM

My dad had tickets to see them on the Animals tour, but he got really sick the night of the show and couldn't go. I was deeply disappointed...

My dad was a huge stoner in the 70's, though...

Wait whats the name of the song with Lennon and Ono on it. I know its been rumored that the Beatles or at least some of the Beatles did a song with Barrett called What a Shame Mary Jane, but its been pretty much passed off as a fake. I own it and I can see how it may sound like them but at the same time there is nothing distinguishing that would make me think the any of the Beatles where on the track.

I would drag myself halfway across the US missing both legs and one arm, bleeding from seven gunshot wounds and becoming slowly infected with a combination of gangrene and a tomahawk to the head before I missed a Pink Floyd show. Man... I would never, ever let my dad live that down.

Riva 05-18-2006 07:37 PM

Oh dear. Then it's probably a fake. It's on this bootleg, I assume, called Last Screams.

Interstellar overdrive (ext) (Barrett/Waters/Wright/Mason)
Flaming (Barrett)
Apples and oranges (Barrett)
The gnome (Barrett)
Mathilda mother (Barrett)
Pow r toc h (Barrett/Waters/Wright/Mason)
Jugband blues (Barrett)
Scream thy last scream (Barrett)
Vegetable man (Barrett)
Julia dream (Waters)
Massed gadgets of Hercules (Barrett)
Murderistic woman (Barrett)
Let there be more light (Waters)
What's the shame Mary Jane (Barrett-Lennon-Ono)
It would be so nice (Wright)

Yeah I would still get that though it looks pretty cool. And What's the Shame Mary Jane is a decent enough track aside from the crappy sound quality, but mabye its different on that album.

EDIT: I just can't get over this 22+ min version of A Saucerful of Secrets I have on a 1970 bootleg from the Fillmore West. And Careful With That Axe Eugene is so trippy its scary.

What's the best version of Careful With That Axe, Eugene?

EDIT: oh man, I don't know if you can still DL that.

BigTrav415 05-19-2006 10:32 PM

Mother is such a good song, the acoustic riff, the low organ in the background, the drums during the solo, the actual solo of course, etc. I always kind of overlooked it.

Set The Controls is quite possibly my favorite song to put me to sleep during study hall. Seriously, I was working on some assignment one day, and it shuffled on, and I suddenly I woke up like 30 minutes later when the bell rang. I listen to it whenever I need to get to sleep quick (the LAP version to be exact) I don't think the song is boring or anything, I love it, but it is so incredibly soothing somehow, especially when it gets the "spacey" part between the two vocal sections. Plus the muffled drums, mystic bassline, and soft beautiful vocals... yeah... zzz... wha- wha? where?... zzz...

Spiritofmosa 05-20-2006 01:07 AM

im watching some pink floyd vids at youtube.com, pink floyd looks awsome live!

Mother is a great song, it and Goodbye Blue Sky are at the apex of The Wall Disc 1.

And yeah, I feel asleep once to that song also. I love the way it lulls you into the rhythm of the song. So soft and cosy.

YouTube is such a great site. I've found so much cool PF stuff. I think the first PF vid I ever watched on there was the music video for See Emily Play  So awesome.

Riva, do you like Mastodon? I got Leviathan a little while ago, it's pretty sweet, even for me, a non-metalhead.

Yeah, a pretty fun band. Not one of my favourite metal ones though. I respect them for reading great literature though.

Yeah, I still haven't read Moby Dick but I'm sure I will eventually. Could you help me out a little bit with the album as a concept? I understand it's about Moby Dick, I'm confused about the viewpoint in the songs sometimes. Does it switch between Moby and Ahab? And what is the significance of Joseph Merrick?

np: Blood And Thunder - Mastodon and Plasma HD TV Episode - The Simpsons

Riva 05-21-2006 05:55 PM

The viewpoint in the book is always from the point of view of Ishmael.

I don't know the lyrics of the album well, so I can't explain why Joseph Merrick, the elephant man, is in the album.

DeusExMachina 05-22-2006 05:31 PM

Riva, your icon is huge. I like it.

Hey guys. Not too much to contribute, just stopping in.

I listened to WYWH (the album) for the first time in months yesterday. It was nice, I'd forgotten how awesome SOYCD is.

Riva 05-22-2006 06:04 PM

Hehe, I'm always listening to WYWH, so I don't think I could ever forget its awesomeness. Nice to see you again, Ethan.

DeusExMachina 05-23-2006 10:04 PM

Nice to see you too. So what's been going on in here lately? Any shocking revelations?

I read somewhere an interview with The Flaming Lips, and they mentioned something about having done a cover of WYWH (the song). I'd love to get a hold of that.

MidnightRider 05-23-2006 11:18 PM

I picked up Live In Pompeii: The Director's Cut the other day, it's really cool. All the interviews were pretty interesting, it was nice to see that Roger's ego hadn't taken off yet.

I listen to WYWH probably about once a week.

I'm continuing to enjoy On An Island, though the lyrics do get to me at times. If Gilmour could put the same emotion and power into words that he does his guitar playing, it would be pretty amazing. I guess they're not too bad, I just think they lack a little substance in places.

Yeah the lyrics are kinda...meh. He actually didn't write a lot of them. Most came from his wife and a few other people who helped out. He admits himself that he's never been much of a lyricist lol. I wonder what he's gonna do after the tour is done.

ridgebball07 05-24-2006 04:16 PM

i saw david gilmour at radio city...simply amazing. i also have tickets to see roger waters at the garden, and i was wondering if anyone knew if nick mason and rick wright are playing too? ive heard rumours, but nothing for sure. thanks.

I saw Gilmour at Radio City, whitch night were you there? When I went it was such an amazing show. It looks like I'll be seeing you at Roger's show as well. Waters will be hard pressed to beat Gilmour's show.

To Med: It almost happend. So close. Gilmour said yes to doing a reunion for a show and Wright said no. I guess he still has strong feelings about Roger throwing him out of the band.

YouGottaBeCrazy 05-24-2006 09:27 PM
